2yo Pekingese With Spinal Problem

Recommended Posts

I have been contacted by someone who is desperate to get help for their 2yo Pekingese who appears to have bulging spinal discs. according to the owner she is a pensioner who has leukemia and cannot pay for treatment. She is willing to surrender to a rescue who can offer treatment. Dog is currently on pain meds and unable to walk.

i would also donate so this lady could keep her little dog , very sad situation , maybe once the circumstances have been confirmed a go fund me page could be set up ?

Great idea to fundraise but if the lady's sick as well it would be a terrible strain on her to manage a sick dog that needs a lot of rehab (if diagnosis is correct).

Esky would be keen to help but the costs would be very difficult for anyone to face, let alone someone with elderly dogs already needing a lot of treatment.

Maybe we can perform a DOL miracle and raise some funds for this little one?

I'm wondering if Xrays have been done for the diagnosis or it's just a guess? I've had dogs in pain with necks/backs misdiagnosed and have gotten chiropractic treatment and they've recovered

Gillbear do you have an estimate of costs to treat this little fella? Team Dog may be able to help with costs so she can keep him at home with her, if that's what is best for her.

Feel free to put her in contact directly [email protected] or PM and I'll give you my number.

Thanks for all the input. I am taking everything with a bit grain if salt as I don't know this person but have sent her the link for team dog. Thank you  the owner sounds like she dearly loves her poochie but costs could run at $5000 + and will require specialist care.

Thanks Gillbear hopefully we hear from her. We have vets that work with us providing lower cost care so we may be able to negotiate a more reasonable price and then do a fundraiser to cover the cost. Would like to keep her dog at home with her - I would imagine he is a big comfort to her being so unwell.

Lovely to see all the offers of help. For the sake of the little dog, I would want an iron clad guarantee that surgery would free her from pain and enable her to live a happy, normal as possible life.

There are lots of dogs that fully recover from this type of condition and go on to live amazing lives!

Nothing to do with surgery can ever give an iron clad guarantee- to many factors.

Also what is normal? Does that mean if she needed a wheelchair but was pain free that it wouldn't be normal? I can understand saying that it is too expensive and other dogs can be helped but I think your asking a little too much to want guarantees....

I would never say not to carry out an expensive procedure on one dog because so many other dogs could be helped. Don't know where that came from. I have a dog on whom I spent willingly and happily thousands of dollars to restore his sight. Just meant the house didn't get painted LOL.

I'm simply putting it out there to consider whether surgery would help this little dog. I know "normal" can mean different things to different people, but in cases like these whether the dog is owned by someone with squillions to spend or not, the outcome for the dog needs to be considered. There have been many threads over the years discussing this difficult issue :).
