Fluffy Whitester: the dog we've been dreaming of for 7 years.

My son is eight. Ever since he learnt to talk he's been telling me (consistently) that he badly wants a little snowball white, fluffy dog. A Pomeranian, Maltese, Bichon Frise or Papillion sort of thing.

I feel like the time is finally right to find the right breeder. Puppy alike to the above, papers not require, timing not required (we could wait more years if needed). I'm looking for someone who keeps the litter with the mother for 12 weeks rather than 8. The mother to have had reasonable breaks between litters. I'm willing to travel Australia to collect the right puppy.

Do you know the breeder I'm looking for?

Looking to have 1 or 2 little dogs. Not from the same litter but purchased at the same time and age.

ABOUT ME: Far West NSW. 32 yo. Previously had a female rottweilier for 9 years (passed away last year from cancer). She was my sooky, sqwooshy lap dog. It wouldn't have been fair of me to get this little dog while I had the massive rotty. Cat owner.

Welcome and I'm so sorry for your loss. :rainbowbridge:

Not sure if it's relevant to you but Poms and Papillon do shed but can be kept nice with regular attention. Maltese and Bichon don't but the trade-off is regular grooming or they will tangle/matt, so I guess I mean more expense or learning to D.I.Y. All different temperament but my experience is majority adult rescues so you'll get help here about suitable natures.

Sorry I can't be of help with finding breeders. Did you check out the Dol list of registered breeders?. Papers might not be a deal breaker but it's nice to be able to create a good relationship and learn the lines your doggy is related to https://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/dog-breeders.asp

Over the years, I have had three of these breeds and loved them madly.  To be clear, the Papillon was a Chi x Papillon, tiny little fellow and 100% adorable.  None of them had a mean bone in their bodies, but ALL needed constant grooming.  Funnily enough I will be minding a Bichon next weekend and that will be a first.

Keep an eye on the rescue pages, too, because SWF (small white fluffies) come up all the time because people don’t factor in the high maintenance aspect of their coats.  I found the Maltese were the worst in this regard.

Good luck and be careful of scams.

I'm looking for someone who keeps the litter with the mother for 12 weeks rather than 8.

If the above is a requirement in thinking the pup is better off with its mother longer then you will need to be more on top off what enrichment, training & independence training the breeder does.
Are they lead training, exposing to car drives, teaching grooming skills ,how to enjoy there own company  & being confidient thinkers on ther own (if being left with litter mates become more reliant on there company or as a source of confidence it can take longer to re adjust into your home )

Most bitches by 10 weeks have very little to do with there pups from 8 to 12 weeks its up to the breeder to ensure there covering very important life skills during this period if hanging on to them longer by choice or because a puppy owner thinks there better off .A mother will interact here & there those sharp teeth trying to drink doesnt equate to a happy mum so infact this is the age where human intervention is soo important .

If the breeder is doing nothing then it will be more work for you .

As this is a purebreed forum  people wont have breeders to suggest

just want to caution against purchasing two puppies at the same time and age, regardless of progeny. It’s best to wait until the oldest has reached adulthood, well out of teenage years and settled, before getting another puppy.

Dog trainers see problems all the time with anxiety and aggression from pups raised too close together in age. The outcome is often needing to rehome or euthanise one of the dogs when problems explode around the time of social maturity. Some people successfully prevent these problems occurring, but they tend to be those already heavily invested and experienced in dog behaviour and training. It is way more than double the work to raise two behaviourally well pups at once. Pups need to be socialised separately, they need to spend time alone from each other as well as from you, among other things.

Like Dogsfevr, I also wouldn’t wait 12 weeks. I’d want pup in the home and enrolled in a quality, force free puppy preschool at 8 weeks. Pet Professional Guild Australia and Delta Institute are good places to look. If there is no one suitable near you, I’d do the Polite Paws Sydney online course as the content is excellent. Please read the AVSAB position statement on puppy socialisation as socialisation is likely more than you think it is: https://avsab.org/resources/position-statements/

Sorry I don’t have any breeder recommendations, but I wish you the very best with your search.

Your son sounds a bit like my youngest daughter she has been very particular about getting another chihuahua which we recently finally added to our family, I can’t advise on breeders but I would personally look at long haired chihuahuas or bichons, I’ve found Pomeranian breeders don’t like selling to family’s with young kids which was one of the main reasons we didn’t get one when we got our first chihuahua and I’ve met too many papillons that are snappy so they are a breed I would avoid with kids, also finding a well bred Maltese is extremely hard, keep in mind any fluffy breed is going to require ongoing grooming.

Getting two pups at the same time can be a bit more difficult if you’re not experienced but if there’s two people to train them and you enrol them in a good puppy school then later follow thru with proper obedience training it’s doable.
