Something Is Wrong With Our Bc!

Recommended Posts

My mum has a 3 year old Border collie and there is something wrong with her she is pacing every night she will not settle down she just walks up and down up and down driving all us crazy. She is eating normal

We took her to the vet and they put her on valium to calm her down so to stop her from pacing we also noticed she is wobbly on her back legs and she only turns clockwise not anti clock wise. The vets have not idea what’s wrong they said is not an inner ear infection cause her ears a clear. She has also been put on an anti biotic but they don’t seem to be doing anything. We have stopped giving her the valium cause it just made her too dopy....She does not have CEA has she has been DNA tested and she is not losing her sight..

If anyone has any suggestion or anything I would love to hear them.........

I don't know. But I do know that in the absence of the Vet being able to determine, I'd be seeking a referral to a specialist.

Does this only occur at night time? Hazarding a guess (stab in the dark, really) .... perhaps something skeletal is out of place? Uncomfortable to lie down and rest? Might explain the weakness you describe in the back legs?

Could be one of a number of things. See a specialist, or at least a reputable Vet with sound knowledge of behaviour as well as of muscular/skeletal conditions. Go from there.

Good luck. I hope your Mum's Dog's journey to recovery is short and simple.

Please let us know how you get on.

hi Eryn

funny you should say it sound like a muscular/skeletal conditionbecasue thats what i said to her today..

the vet suggested that if the antibiotics dont work she will have to have a MIR on her head.....so it sounds like thats what might have to happen.....

Were her back legs wobbly this time?

Perhaps there is still something further amiss skeletally that requires a re-visit with the chiro.

I'm not suggesting you shouldn't go for a specialist consult (in fact I think that's what I suggested in an earlier post), but if it does turn out to be a totally skeletal problem, physio/chiro consults will be far cheaper than an MRI, as your Vet had suggested would be next.

Have you contacted the chiro and explained what your dog is still doing - the chiro may insist that everything is now properly adjusted, or might request a re-visit.

ETA: I got to admit .... I'm thinking neurological issues, though.

I agree, it sounds like neurological involvement, stroke, seizure, tumor. Whilst wobbly back legs can be from a number of issues like spinal, or medical problems, the holding the head down and walking in circles would point to neurological issues.

Do you know what diet the dog is on, or if it is likely to have been in contact with poisons, toxic plants or insects? Have the ears been checked?

Further investigation would be the way to go, sooner rather than later.

i must say i do agree it realy does seem like its in her head.....

Do you know what diet the dog is on

yeah she is fed supercoat dry food with raw minced beef

Have the ears been checked

her ears have been checked but i noticed last night that she holds her left ear down and i sniffed it and it wasnt bad but it did have a light smell to it. The vets checked it a weekago now and said they were fine there is no dischage but yeah a little smell.....

i talked to mum before and she said she is not as wobbly on her back legs anymore but she is still not normal....i dont know what to do if only dogs could talk and tell us whats wrong......

Are you sure she hasn't fallen and hurt her back at all. Or something else like hit something????

She might have a pinch nerve or a dislocated disc or something along those lines and is in pain and that's why she is pacing and wobbly?

They should have - I would think - which Chiro do you use???

I mean it could very well be a neuro problem - I hope it is not.

But if she is getting better on her back legs - it might be spinal!

I had a similar thing with one of my dogs when she was a pup - she started to limp very badly and we took her to vet and their chiro took x-rays the works, could fine nothing so they both thought it was arthirtis - gave her medication etc etc but nothing worked. Eventually I took her to my old doggie chiro and as soon as he examined her he said that she had broken toes. X-rays were done and she had broken toes!

Take her to the Monash Veterinary Clinic and ask for a consultation with Ray Ferguson, IMO he is THE best vet in Melbourne and he is also a chiropractor. I'm sure that if anyone can help he's the man.

Sounds like a head injury. If there is 3 discs out of place she could have been bowled over, smacked her head and now has pain in that side of her face. Check that maybe she hasnt got a fractured skull, broken the root of her tooth or even ruptured eardrum on that side.

go the x-ray and MRI if available because its either pain or nervous damage from my guess.
