  1. I am spewing my old dog is deaf. She knew barking wasn't allowed, although she rarely barked herself, and would go and tell the youngsters off if they barked! Worked beautifully.
  2. Thanks Dova. Good luck to you too
  3. I know Were are you going to hold your agility? Are you going to be super serious or more a fun agility?
  4. If you are teaching 2o2o then they learn to touch a spot, which is actually off the contact. You use a target plate to teach that, fade that so they touch the grass. Running contacts is also I think more about a spot then colour.
  5. I find if you have multiple dogs you have to train the youngest one first - if you make them wait - then they get just so over the top that it becomes very ugly ;) and yep like you said JulesP, every turn is their turn! Once I get the required dog out the rest are really good. It is getting the dog out the gate that it a nightmare. I've basically got 3 BC all scratching at the gate, jumping up and down! Total chaos. Nice to see the enthusiasm though. I often end up with all 3 out and then have to convince 2 to go back and wait.
  6. If you keep it fun and light and avoid drilling then your dog will be fine Wuffles. I am certainly not getting any indication from my pup that she doesn't want to be training. The biggest problem I am having with the dogs at the moment is the total hysterics at training time. They all want to go first! Trying to get one dog out to the training area at a time is a nightmare!
  7. I can't see anything wrong with that, but I agree that a NILIF approach might sort a few broader issues out. Upon reviewing the OP's most recent post I would like to see much faster results, actually I would like to see almost immediate cessation of nipping. There could be a timing issue. MM, have a look at controlled tug games. Pup needs to learn how to play appropriately. What is wrong with it? Well a smart dog might keep nipping because it knows a treat/attention will be coming.
  8. One of my complaints with my club is that if you want to go into the trial rings then you have to pass basic obedience first (24 weeks) and you have to be in or pass the advanced class. Whilst they don't paddock bash, the structure if very formal.
  9. Micky Moo do you know about NILIF? Have a google if you don't. The fact that you are still having to correct the dog at all would suggest that you need to take other action to get this dog under control. If one of my dog bite me, they would get drop kicked out the door! And then a good week of boot camp. Currently you are giving a correction, getting the dog to sit and then giving it treats. Dog bites, gets a bit of a yank but then gets yummies. I prefer to be really hard for a sort time then so-so hard for a longer period of time. Biting you is just not on. Can forgive biting the groomer, it isn't a fun experience for most dogs.
  10. My club doesn't do paddock bashing so that isn't the problem. I am actually wanting to go the opposite way to most of you and understand were Serkat is coming from. I normally get the pup home and start training. This pup, I am enjoying watching her dig holes, lol. Have never not followed a program though and don't want to end up with a feral! I might just be burnt out from puppies too! I teach puppies (4-6 months old) and have just put 2 dogs in a row through our clubs program. Feel the need to do something different.
  11. Oh so you are all teaching heeling at 8 weeks then?
  12. Interested in what ages people start doing some more serious training with their pups beyond your basic sits, drops & loose lead walking. I guess it depends a bit on the pup.
  13. Had a fun clinic last weekend and got talked into entering a comp this weekend Don't think we are ready yet so the tummy is very upset.
  14. I'd be finding a different club Jess. One that follows the method that you want to use. What are you wanting to do? Maybe someone will know a club that uses that methods.
  15. Don't bother, skateboards operate outside time, space and conditioning. Arrr a sense of humor! Very important in dog training!
  16. PF if you are horsey then you should remember this - "this will profit you, this will profit you not" Most of the pet people in my class look at me like I am 'crazy dog lady' as it is, I hate to think the looks I would get if I launched into the quadrant stuff.
  17. Totally agree with this bit. And heaven help anyone that says anything against prongs, e collars etc.
  18. I think there is a big assumption that the people that go on the Delta course or the NDTF course know nothing to start with. Surely most people would have been around the block a bit and are not total newbies to training? Maybe the Delta people are picking that course because they have already decided that PP is the way for them.
  19. Sas it looks like he is coming around in anticipation of his treat. I would get the food off me and only have a couple of bits in a pocket. I would also feed with the hand closet to the dog so he is treated whilst in position.
  20. Had a look at this last week and thought it was interesting. Amber (4 month old BC) is at the very start of her training and is tending to walk very wide or sideways in front of me. She isn't after treats but wants to look at me. Thought this method might work well with her so I gave it a go. Got some very nice work. Tried it also with one of my older dogs who also likes to be wider and not straight. He also came in nice and close after a few backwards goes. He was a bit harder to keep in the heel position going backwards, he wanted to heel on the right for some reason. He has been doing agility so is comfortable on both sides. Dunno why but I am feeling the urge to try different methods with Amber! Maybe because the other 2 dogs are pretty young and I want to do something new. So ta Ptolomy
  21. Strolling in to see why a thread about instructors courses is now 10 pages long.... :D
  22. Lots of info about Hendra here - http://www.hendraawareness.com/index.php Hendra is not lyssavirus btw. They are 2 different diseases. lyssavirus is closely related to rabies.
  23. There just haven't been any recorded cases outside of QLD of Hendra. Logically the disease could occur further south.
  24. I don't feed my dogs breakfast on training/trial days and I limit their play with strange dogs. My own dogs all hang out together. I was told I should keep them apart but I don't find that the interaction with each other hinders their training. When it is training time I have 4 border collies all trying to get out of the gate to be the first to train. I also don't crate/pen them as I would rather they spent the day running around having fun. I like them to be pets first and foremost.
