Agility Training In Outer East Melb
JulesP replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I've booked into K9 Kompany at Lilydale to do the pet agility. Probably all I want to do at the moment anyhow - have some fun (and hope Brock does too!). It is on a Sat morning so works a bit better than nights. I am asking about Tuesday nights though. -
Agility Training In Outer East Melb
JulesP replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I was interested in the Tuesday nights but heard that you have to do all the prep and modules first??? Am booked in to teach my first class in Oct so can only do the one training session on a Sunday with Brock. -
Anyone know any good agility training places in outer east Melb? Brock is over 18 months now and seems to really like jumping over the obedience jumps! It is the most animated I have seen him . I go to Croydon but don't have time to do agility & obedience on a Sunday so am thinking I might have to go elsewhere. Any ideas?

I keep telling my friends to use dog training techniques on their kids!

Congratulations!

If I yelled ahhh at Brock that would make him break even quicker ;)

I believe that Pet Goods Direct are owned by the same company as the one that sells the puppies. It is their outlet store.

Brock is Khayoz Ace High and Fern is Gypsue Chrissy Belle.

I'm having much the same issues with my border and he hasn't been mistreated. Doesn't seem to matter were in the class I put him for stays I always have the issue of dogs breaking and owners yelling. He doesn't even like the way the owners walk back to their dogs (in a grumpy manner). I am standing very close in the stays and telling him how wonderful he is.

I just put the ramp on and used a treat to lure them up and down a couple of times. But they had both had walked up and down things in baby agility. The only issue I have with the ramps is were to put the damn thing once the dogs are in the back of the car!! Would like to know were other people stash theirs. I lift Brock in at the moment but he is getting a bit heavy now so was thinking about the ramp again. You get lots of laughs btw when you use it!

Can I just brag that Brock is a lovely little dog to have around? Well both the dogs are! They are both so obedient and well behaved that they are just a total joy. Brock's new 'trick' is finding the pony for me, he runs and 'points' to where ever she is. It is pretty cute and he is very proud of himself!

My instructor had me using the clicker but then I got told off for using it at club so I haven't used it much since. Just sticking with the verbal 'yes'. My only real negative on the method is that I feel it has stopped me verbally praising my dogs as much as I used to.
-
Nothing really jazzes him up. He plays tug to make me happy, the minute I let go so does he. In the sit stay I am staying very close and using lots of encouragement. So today when the other dog got told off, I returned to mine gave him some praise and then stepped away again. He was probably the most bouncy today that he has been, but that was with 2 weeks of no training! Most BC of that age would have been nuts!

Not quite sure what to do about Brock's sookiness. I am in a trial type class at the moment, so no real distraction type stuff. He isn't improving in this class though. i.e. sit stay he nearly dropped when the dog next to him got told off for dropping. He is fine if everything is perfect but I am concerned about being in a trial situation if dogs break. He is also very sooky about SFE and is going backwards if anything. I could go into a different class were they do all sorts of different exercises, weird stays etc. I've avoided that class as I am worried that it will totally freak him out. Or am I babying him and he just needs to get over it?? Kind of hit a plato here.

With my BC she was sound as long as the knee cap was in place. She only held the leg up when the knee cap moved. She never cried or whimpered about it. If I put it back in place for her she would run off again happy as. I did have the operation but it didn't work. Enough scar tissue formed though to keep the knee in place but she limps.

Shy Dogs Are Dogs That Were Not Properly Socialised?
JulesP replied to laffi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Shyness, softness whatever you want to call it isn't all bad! My sooky border is the most lovely pet. Slighly challenging for dog sports but he is primarily a pet. He isn't timid enough btw that he would snap at someone. He loves everyone. He went to prepuppy school and has been going to dog club ever since, so fairly good socialisation. He is still quite jumpy at noises and gets very upset if told off. He is quite anxious in new places too. And the licking! OMG. Everything gets that submissive lick! Including the window if I am inside! -
Flaxseed oil actually has all the Omegas in it. You could try rinsing doggie in QV oil. Haven't done it on doggies but it works well for the ponies! You get it at the chemist, blue and white bottle. I feed Proplan Salmon and find that is brilliant for the dogs coat and skin.

Saying Hello To Other Dogs
JulesP replied to charlie mouse's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Got to say if your GSD ran up to me like that you would cop a massive earfull!! Both my pup and I are still rather traumatised from being attacked. If you don't have a 100% recall then don't let the dog off lead. I don't let my dog run up to any dogs. -
Sounds like a nice pup. Has she been kept in a run? Or in the house?
-
Maloo my border is like this. In particular I am having issues with stands, stays and retrieve, I get the flopping on the ground too. As a pet he is absolutely lovely. I am considering taking a sideways step too and just doing something else for a while. Herding made him a bit anxious too so I am thinking about agility. My club also has a social class, were they do alot of distraction stuff. It will help him or totally fizz his brain, not sure on that one. Any thoughts?
-
Hey Jesomil, I read something on their website about being able to go for further herding lessons after you had attended a clinic.

Well Brock is actually holding the dumbell now! I ended up letting him drop it and saying no as he dropped it. That seemed to give him the idea that he is supposed to have it in his mouth! My poor toes though! He is still rather peeved about the whole thing. Drop on recall I taught with the dog running around the garden, basically would call out drop, sit etc. In the beginning you might have to call out wait or something so they realise it is wait and drop right there, not at my feet!
-
Yep definately think that they pick up on any change in us. I had to do my basic obedience test with a cracked tail bone, it made me walk quite differently and as a result Brock surged a fair bit. With a cold your voice would probably sound different too. Hope you get better soon!
