  1. Thanks for the responses :) ... The reason Im feeding both of these things, is because I am struggling to get my guys coats back to the correct rich reddy orange colour that the breed standard calls for. Over the last 6 months I have had issues with their coats, i.e. dead coat particularly around the neck, pale seedy looking red coat etc, etc. Prior to that, I was proud as punch with their colour. I have asked a few breeders if they uses anything to help this colour and in particular the breeder of 3 of my dogs, and this is what she has her dogs on, and has so for years. Her dogs often win Best Red/Tri colour at Specialties, as does a lot of her exports all over the world... Staff'n'Toller Basenji's are prone to Hypothyroid, I will do some more research into using the kelp, and in fact I may stop using it, till I have my answers. May even flick Jean Dodds an email as well... Thanks for the offer Ben and Jerry, I think that Nekhbet has answered why the seaweed meal is going all goopy. I did wonder if by using the boiling water I was possibly destroying the 'goodness' of both products, so I might stop that. The reason I was doing that, was to 'melt' the Fish Oil capsule... The dry that Im using can be anything, Bonnie, Supercoat, Royal Canin, depending on whats on special at the produce store. We are very limited in what dry is available down here in Tas. They would only get a very small childs handful of dry, in the morning, and probably an adults handful at night... The rest is the other 'goodies' mentioned in my first post... Thanks for the info, off to do some more research, methinks ;) ...
  2. I have just started my Basenji's on Kelp... I feed it at night, mixed in with their dry, and whatever other things they are getting, (i.e. sardines, chicken mince, offal, yoghurt etc, etc), and I have noticed that when I put the boiled water on the kelp, and mix it around, it goes all gelatinous... Is this normal ??? The dogs dont seem to mind at all. I was just wondering if others have this problem ??? Another question I have is, I have also started them on Livermol as well, (alternating Kelp one night, Livermol the next), and in the ingredients it has Fish Oil. I give them a fish oil capsule every second or so night. It doesnt mention the amount, but its the 4th listed ingredient, out of 5 ingredients. Just wondering if I should stop the capsules ??? I also give them Vit E about twice a week as well, on advice from here :) ...
  3. Sorry Roguedog, I havent been back to this thread... Busy at the moment, but I will answer you tomorrow :) ...
  4. Im a Basenji slave, (no-one owns a B, they own you !!!)... Everything that has been said here, is so true. I was/am involved with Cattle Dogs, and I foolishly believed a B would be a breeze............................WRONG... They can be a massive PITA :) ... They most certainly are not a breed for eveyone, they can be stubborn, pigheaded, aloof, cunning, destructive, difficult to train, (not untrainable just need to be trained with positive training, they wont tolerate training with punishment, ever), loyal, clean, entertaining 24/7, frustrating, escape artists :D ... Someone mentioned above about the B she was living with wanting to fly out the door, at every opportunity they had... Yes this is an hourly attempt at our house, and with 4, you really need eyes in the back of your head... We have 10 foot high fences, and 2 out of my 4 have attempted to climb it, thankfully without success !!! They are incredibly agile, very cat-like. They are constantly looking for things to chew, toilet paper and tissues are a particular favourite, along with mobile phones !!! All toys are destroyed in minutes, and if bored will make anything within their sight their chew toy... In saying that they are difficult to train, there are a handful of B's in Aus who hold obedience titles, ET titles, agility titles etc. Im on an American Basenji Forum, and in America, they are quite a lot of B's with multiple titles. One in particular has 1 dog with over 30 titles, another dog of hers with about 20 odd, and a new youngster with a handful already... They can be trained. They are NOT unintelligent, they just like to do things in their own way, and once you accept this, life is easier for all ;) ... They are a hound, a primitive hound. They are led by their noses, and I believe they are in the top 10 breed that is killed by cars. They hold no fear with any transport, and if they are on a trail, they are selectively deaf, and just follow their noses, often leading them onto roads ... They cannot be let off leash, even the best trained dogs, will forget their recall training when on the nose of a trail... Most have no recall at all. The example above of the lady with her 3 dogs having all those obedience etc, titles, she wont let her dogs off lead, unless the area has very secure fencing... Ok so reading all that paints them as a dreadful dog to own ... I love mine with all my heart, all have their own gorgeousness about them. They can be incredibly affectionate, loyal, easy to live with, lovable imps !!! Wont ever be without one in my life... The major health issues are Fanconi Syndrome, Eye diseases, (PPM, PRA, and Coloboma mostly), Thyroid problems, Hip/Elbow problems, Haemolytic Anaemia, and Umbilical Hernias, (very common in the breed) . Just late last year we now have a DNA test for Fanconi, and with some very careful breeding of tested dogs, hopefully we can get this disease reduced, perhaps even completely erradicated. Haemalytic Anaemia is a disease that has just about been wiped out, after breeders all over the world, revised their breeding programmes around the tested stock. There are a few other issues affecting the breed, seperation anxiety, they can get very 'narky' when they are both in season, (yes boys also come in season as well !!!),. Go over to the Dog Breeds 101 here on DOL, and on the last page there is a little about them there. A few other good sites are the Basenji Club of America, they have great info on anything Basenji related. We have some great websites here in Australia, with lots of info as well as some beautiful dogs, BRAT, ( Basenji Rescue and Transport), is an American Rescue site, it also has some wonderful stories of B's rescued, and a great insight to their temperaments. Speaking of temperaments, here in Aus we have definately improved our B's temperaments over the last 10 years, or so. I have been told by a number of judges over the years, how they were very wary of B's, (a few even saying they disliked judging them at all), with some saying that they have been lunged at or bitten. Not just here in Aus, but all over the world. I think that all over the world their temperaments have improved greatly. Some boys can be particularly narky when they are in season, (here in Aus, usually between Feb, March, and April-ish), and a few breeders will leave boys out of the ring during this time. We have some of the best Basenji's in the world here in Australia. Many overseas judges, (usually breed specialists, but not always), mention the quality we have, and quite a few Aussie breeders have exported dogs all over the world, and these dogs are extremely competitive... I think Ive blabbed enough, but if you have any more questions, please post here or feel free to PM me, happy to talk about B's all day :) ... ETA... Roguedog the B usually only comes into season once a year, often around March/April/May, (southern hemisphere times), with pups due May June and July, so if you arent turned off by my ramblings, talk to some breeders, and perhaps get your name on a waiting list... Occasionally they come into season again around October/Nov, (northern hemisphere time), and some will conceive, but often smaller number of pups, probably due to the dog not really being in season at this time, and the bitch not really in season either. Hope that makes some sense ...
  5. We also had about 40 odd refused till we finally got granted our 45th or something like that ;)... It was hideous, (because we were getting desperate by then), so Mr Rajacadoo went off to night duty, and he came home with RAJACADOO, which is Richard And Jenni's Australian CAttle DOOg... Only submitted that and it was approved... Sent in a list of 5 for our Basenji prefix, got the first choice ...
  6. +4 for Wayrod, hes absolutely fantastic, very competitive prices and good old fashioned service ...
  7. Im in Tassie too Frodo's mum, and I nearly died when I walked into the pet food store to see it on the shelves :) ... My poor hubby didnt understand my huge excitement !!! I have heard of this food from an overseas forum Im on, and they rave about it for one of my breeds... I got some samples to try on one of my dogs, and he loved it... Now to just convince him I NEED to try a bag on the Basenji's ;) ...
  8. I third Wayrod ... Yep Quoll I have sent a few interstate over the last couple of months, Perth twice, Vic twice, SA, NSW and Qld etc and I couldnt be happier with the service ...
  9. I LOOOOOVE the oooops one... They both look so happy, and the smiles on their faces speaks volumes... Such dags, both of them
  10. Thanks everyone for the responses... This pup is a 3 1/2 month old very cruisy and laidback ACD... The email I got from them last night/this am, was that he had a little walk, a zoomie around the park across the road, met some people, is learning to sit, played with some visitors, and as a consequence of this slept through the night cos he was absolutely exhausted !!! EDA: He also went to the Vet where he got a clean bill of health as well ...
  11. It was great to see that the Basenji Club of Vic is putting on classes 15(a), 17(a), and 18(a)... at their Specialty show on the 3rd March  ... Well done guys ...
  12. Just really quickly need to know what the exercise ratio for pups is. Got pup leaving shortly and new owners what to know what it is ??? Is it 5 mins/pups age in months ???
  13. Olivebaby, both my hubby and I are/were nurses, working fulltime shiftwork, when we started showing our dogs, and we had no issues with getting the days off we needed, by requesting days off. This was in Tassie, NT and the ACT ;) ... We probably showed 2 weekends out of 4, we knew the shows we didnt want to miss, (Royals, Specialties, breed specialists etc, etc) request it off, and REFUSED to work it, if we requested it off ... Yes now its a little harder, but still achievable... You need to have a life, and I think most Managers do try to accomodate requests, for the most part... As Greytmate said, teaching pups show training isnt a huge thing. We currently have 2 babies, 13 weeks old tomorrow, they get about 5-10 mins/day of training, if we remember , cant attend puppy showring classes till next year, but will do when/if we arent working... No biggie. Yep they will be shocking in the ring, but all we want from them at this stage is to enjoy the whole experience of the ring... Time enough later to play for the sheep-stations ...
  14. Hi Austerra, Ive been involved in ACD's since 1989, but I havent had a lot of litters, perhaps 7-8, maybe... Ive not had this issue crop up at all. ACD's are born white, but they start to colour up about 3-5 weeks... By 10 weeks he/she should definately have colour on him/her by now. If he/she has a black ear, (as opposed to a red ear), he/she should be a blue. The first thing that jumps out to me is, "Is he deaf" ??? Not just testing by smashing a saucepan over his head, (and watching if he responds) a proper Baer test ??? I think this should be done, as deafness is such an issue in the breed, and being pure white, I wouldnt be surprised if he/she is deaf... Ive also not heard of any breeders having this problem. I am in contact with a few breeders, so I will ask around for you, but its not 'normal'... Would love some feedback if there is a diagnosis found for this pup ... Hubby just mentioned him/her being an albino !!! Doubt it, because of the colour on his/her ear, just a thought...
  15. One of my Basenji boys has quite soft pads, and when he went to the Chiro, (who is a greyhound man), he also recommended dipping his feet into Metho as well... I havent done it as yet, so cant report on its effectiveness...
  16. My ACD pups are 11 1/2 weeks old, and Mum looks like a very poor example of a Whippet , (albeit a odd coloured one !!!) . Seriously she is attrocious. We have visitors tomorrow, (dog people), and she will be hiding from them !!! Skinny, no coat and a tuck up my Basenji's would be very proud of !!! It will grow back ;) ...
  17. Does anyone know who the Basenji was please ???
  18. Yep that just about sums up how I am beginning to feel as well, Aziah ... In poor Patch's defence, now that his ears are more upright, he does look better. I will see if I can get some more pics up after the weekend, (I cant download pics, totally computer illiterate, and hubby is working double shifts over the weekend )...
  19. Ok so we got the pics up, but all over the place ... Not sure why they were repeated on the first post ??? Ok so the pics of the lighter coloured pup is Spot, he is the one that is a little finer, the one I prefer... The pics have distorted them a little, but you get an idea !!! The third pic in the first post is Patch, he is obviously the second boy, the one who hubby prefers...His head shot is in the second lot of pics. The last pic shows both boys sitting at the front of their run, just to compare them a little. The pics really dont show the size difference between them as well as I had hoped, sorry... Dad is a very slow maturer, from very slow maturing lines, Mum is from very quick maturing lines ;) ... Also to add that both Mum and Dad are at the top end of their height scales as well. Forgot to say the pups were 1 day short of 9 weeks in these shots...
