  1. Nothing at all like benadryl . be VERY careful with dosage ...... does she really need it? for kennel cough ..the most important thing is to keep pup quiet and relaxed..to remove anything which will press on the area of the windpipe which is where the infection is (remove collars - no walks on lead ) and to remember some words of wisdom from my vet ... a decent case will take 3 weeks to clear with treatment , and 21 days without ;) as it is a virus .. AB's won't do much ....but some vets are cautious I guess . edit to add ... I always start with the mild ..and work up to the big guns ...
  2. I suggest lots of mowing /leaf blowing , banging and clattering around :)
  3. benadryl and manuka honey here too ... :)
  4. Unfortunately, by commenting/lecturing/pointing out a behaviour , the owner may then feel embarrassed and angry , and frustrated - "It's the dog's fault that person pulled me up, and how dare they tell me what to do !" and the dog's next hour or so could be quite uncomfortable Pick your battles.
  5. When you express the bitch's milk , does it look and feel normal ? Colour, 'stickiness' , ease of flow ,and thickness are all important indicators of what is happening ....mastitis can be picked up early if you know what is normal for your bitch :) Not sure of times .. I would suggest 2 hrs maximum - but remember , toileting the pups is just as important . if she is not attending to that regularly you may well end up with problems Is there any way you can leave her to be free to come & go? Just see if it makes a difference- setting her own schedule ?
  6. :) good to see a close up too! here's my morning 'smoko' (fresh picked ..the parrots left a few fruits )
  7. While a shock to you .. I don't think it classifies as 'abuse' . Old style training , for sure..and there are other ways ..but hardly abuse ,IMO , unless he was repeatedly belting her ... What was the dog's reaction when she got hit? You didn't mention it ..so I guess it wasn't dramatic .. I probably would have flinched ..and just walked on ..
  8. That IS a long time ..and , IMO not usual. Any of ours with pups are free to come & go as they want .. and they are normally only away for 10 mins or so , if that! When pups are around 3 weeks ..then absences are much longer ... is it perhaps too hot in the whelping box? has she been checked for mastitis- perhaps she's sore ... I suggest a vet check .... I also suggest not too much great exercise time outside ... her priority should still be her litter..... Is she normally an outside dog ? if she has been brought inside just to whelp ..maybe move the pups outside in a kennel ?
  9. and , it is not the same as a human bleeding 'period' at all... with dogs it is their peak time ..their fertile/ovulation time ... just to confuse your friend's boyfriend even more :p
  10. ..and the sweat from their pads, and the little marking urinations they need to do.....and the odd hairs which detach and fall, carrying scent .......and the wagging tail , swishing scent around ...
  11. would you be able to video a few behaviours? The excitement , the pacing/running in circles ... and the body language when barking?
  12. so ..you now have 4 shihtzus in a crate ??? be VERY VERY aware they may get agitated and fight
  13. nic B .. please don't try & kill it ... your nerves are frayed enough , and dealing with snakes is best done when cool calm and collected ..... there is too much at risk . Breathe , and just observe where it goes for now ...the more you try & side track it , the more defensive it will feel... Please be careful.
  14. I also think snake is just trying to come 'home' ..and would have been living there some time. <br style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: verdana, tahoma, arial, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; background-color: rgb(238, 242, 247);"> plus you guys have been away with your dad, etc .. and now you're back, snake is all confused/upset. RBB are one of my favourites, being so slow to defensive behaviour ......wish we had more of them instead of browns .. That said .. snakes & dogs & humans sharing a home is not good at all , and I so hope you can get some help without injury to anyone .).incl the RBB who has been keeping your property vermin free ) .
  15. does she really need crating at night at this age ? Can she not be trusted to sleep on a bed ..or suitably protected piece of human furniture?
  16. I think it's a multi dog household now, zeebie ....
  17. , perhaps..to those in the grooming industry - IF there is another rule/protocol drawn up ..perhaps it could be "Buddy's Protocol" or whatever?
  18. Watching .... Hmmm it's not really fair to let the boy/s get all eager and try mounting in the first place , IMO . if it were my household , they would be separated .. I know they are desexed, but also be aware , she ,and they , could well urine mark, too!! *thank goodness for secure runs , and also for desexing!!* :)
  19. desexed males CAN mate AND tie with a bitch ...and for a maiden bitch ..this could be a very upsetting experience , as well as teaching the boy a habit you may regret later on be careful..keep her separated ....
  20. Just do NOT walk her anywhere from your house ..she will be leaving a trail !! also..walks - ON LEAD only for the next few weeks will need to be somewhere there are NO other dogs , or bitches... it is very unfair to have an in season bitch around other entire dogs not your own. The swelling should increase ..then decrease over that third week ... check your yard .. sometimes an in season bitches' hormones will tell her to go find a mate ..and give her the energy and skills needed to leap tall buildings with a single bound!!!
