  1. Oh Just make sure a crate is wide enough for her to lie, on her side, with legs stretched out straight ..and to turn around in comfortably, with little knee twisting /pivoting .
  2. guess it was all my years of guide dog training... dogs were trained from pups to toilet on command .. were emptied out before walks/training .. and not allowed to sniff/toilet on walks (0pbviously if they HAD to go from illness they just did ;) ) Dogs were trained toileting ON lead , given the command word .. so if needed, they could be allowed to empty out in a suitable spot . Toilet on command is such a useful thing to keep your dog comfortable, whilst not having it toilet in inappropriate places It means toileting only takes a minute or two .. and is an absolute godsend when travelling/visiting I always expected the same from my pet dogs - walks on lead are usually 'work' ... runs off lead in parks/paddocks are 'freetime' .. as are runs on longlines in parks - peeing on grass/trees etc is allowed .
  3. I couldn't do that to a dog ... forbid peeing off leash at a dog park and correcting/disciplining all the time NO peeing on leash unless given permission , and no peeing indoors etc . is a sensible rule ... .. when free running and in the presence of other dog scents /other dogs, though, It's a doggy thing to do ,IMO
  4. it sounds as if something gave her a decent allergic reaction ! Glad she's happy again :)
  5. Don't have to - I've been pee'd on several times...... I know the feeling ;)
  6. I don't think it was teh sharpei which had a tumour- I think it was a GSD ,elsewhere.
  7. Exactly. While it is a training issue- it is certainly not worth "furious" - as he had not been trained otherwise ;) he's a teenager- and he needs educating as to when & where to do certain things ..and that is the owner's responsibilty
  8. Much better with the sound off .. I cannot stand all the hype
  9. if you walk him quietly on a harness that's fine ... collars are not a good idea- as they press right on the area of the trachea which is inflamed- and cause extra coughing Running/excitement is also not a good plan- as the more he gets excited , the more he may cough. get a dosage for the cough mix from your vet in teh morning - just to be safe. the vet knows your dog . We don't. So: My suggestions are - keep him comfortable and warm... (not hot) feed him as per normal ... contact your vet in the morning for advice or to make an appointment .
  10. That's the responsible thing to do . When I started work at 8 am .. I used to walk the dog for around 45mins at 5:30 .. then come home & get brekky, etc .It was a nice way to start the day
  11. It is one of my pet hates .. seeing owners allowing dogs (and bitches) to use the whole world as their toilet
  12. "easier" is not the reason you take a dog to an off lead park - sorry. You take dogs to an off lead park to socialise/play... on TOP of their everyday walks/training sessions. I believe all dogs need a session or 3 of education each day .. otherwise, what do they do with their brains ????? if uyour pup has perfect recall, instant 'Down", will happily retrieve/drop an item, or will cheerfully give you his toys/bones/sytolen treasures... then look up trick training on here - lots of folks do snazzy trick training if your dog needs to improve any of the basics I mentioned, then that's what you do a few times a day. Pups/dogs NEED brainwork otherwise they start to think up things to do themselves .. like digging/fence fighting/chewing plants/hoses.. all that stuff :p You go with him ;) or watch him thru a window.. or keep him in and only take him on a long line often ...almost like housetraining again By all means distract him from marking when walking ... BUT after 10 minutes or so of good controlled walking .. take him somewhere suitable and using your toilet command- let him pee . That way he is learning that he can pee .. but YOU say 'when' Yopu then have the knoweledge that your dog is not fouling every upright object in the neighbourhood
  13. A few of ours do it (farm bred Koolies) We trained a couple to do it on command I wouldn't suggest you play on the floor with her ... and perhaps ,with all teh other good things you're doing .. make sure she gets NO attention .. no eye contact, nuthin' ,unless she has 4 feet on thefloor ;)
  14. We use those large plastic bins - used to store bulk honey etc .. screw top lid.
  15. oops You need to keep him on lead or a long line , if you cannot control what he does in public. Train him to pee/poo on command (it won't work 100% if he's entire and into teh habit of marking everywhere) When you see him start to toilet - use your chosen word .. and praise .EVERY time . Then, take him on long line/lead .. and use the command when he sniffs.. if he Toilets- then lots of praise . Make sure he toilets before you take him anywhere! Taking him home doesn't really help him learn anything ..... and recall will not be quick enough ... sniff/pee is only a couple of seconds!! I would also suggest you increase your daily training sessions .. maybe 3 instead of one Just a few minutes at a time ... so he gets used to paying attention to you ;) As to the desexing bit .... unless he is a show dog or a breeding dog - then castration , either surgically or with an implant is a good idea - although it may not stop the habit of marking
  16. Blood is always a bit of a worry .. if she is no better in the morning, i would suggest a vet visit - pups can go downhill fast ,with tummy bugs ... No food - plenty of water.. and see how she is tomorrow- poor little thing .
  17. he was a lovely looking old man Sorry he had to go. I have a soft spot for kadnook labs
  18. Welcome he is a BABY who has just been removed from everything he knows. So , yes, he will vocalise. Where does he sleep? What kind of crate have you? What exercise does he get? When do you feed him? What toilet training had he before you go him?
  19. oakway- It seems this has been done ... Curlybert - Black stool indicates digested blood ...and we see it in our dogs if they have pigged out on liver/very fresh red meat etc - lasts for a couple of days. I have also seen this in a dog with internal bleeding .. I wish you luck at the vets ...has she done any normal coloured stools, or is everything black? :hugs:
  20. lean meat isn't really fattening... personally I'd skip the beans/peas stuff - dog's aren't made to digest that ;) lean meat plus rib bones/roo tail & a few veges , plus a bit of reduced fat yogurt and teh odd egg .. ? Sorry, I don't believe in filling stomach space with fibre ( and sugar and carbs) ... they're dogs, not humans ...good satisfying protein, a little fibre and some bones etc is what I use . Everyone has different approaches .. and mine is that dogs are designed to feel satisfied/full with protein/meat ;)
