  1. For a simple castration, I have not heard of keeping them overnight . I would not be comfortable with leaving a dog in an unattended clinic overnight Where I used to work, the vet lived on site, so someone would always check any animal in 'hospital'....and we never kept any normal desexing, male or female in overnight
  2. Doesn't really sound like nightmares from that description......have you owned a dog before? They will often dream for quite long periods, vocalising, trembling, twitching...all very normal! I have known dogs with nightmares, and they really react! I would advise NOT waking her... this may interrupt an important part of the sleep cycle... If it disturbs you, then put her alongside your bed to sleep- that way she can be nearby, but not waking you as easily. if she is in a crate full of cuddly bedding, she is safe, and within arm's reach if needed! being a poodle X spaniel, make sure you get her used to having her floppy ears played with/checked/groomed every day, as well as the rest of her, naturally it makes for much more peaceful grooming later on!
  3. R I P Feral........ make em feel your presence over the bridge :hugs :
  4. did someone get it on film?? I know it's hard!
  5. I have been thinking on this........... and I figure that pups , from neonates up, learn by trial & error. Do the 'right' thing, and you get a reward..food/warmth/comfort/play/relief Do the 'wrong' thing, and you stay unrewarded, or even receive something unpleasant/painful. simple and balanced. (right & wrong are obviously a human concept )
  6. I wouldn't use one .. in case it got chewed .. there's a lot of grain in there! We are lucky having a slow combustion heater... on which I heat housebricks!! They are on there all day.. and are hot at bedtime. Wrapped well in a piece of woolen blanket, then put into a woollen terry type sock .. they stay warm pretty well all night- cannot leak, or be chewed much, and the pups/cats/piglets/baby birds love em!!
  7. Hamlet wears a muzzle when I'm worried he will scrounge stuff ... he has a plastic basket one . if YOU treat putting the muzzle on as an everyday occurrence, same as putting on the collar and lead- your dog will soon see it the same way. if you hesitate, and apologise...... she will feel that it is a bad thing . My brother has one working dog who needs to be muzzled around young sheep- he gets impatient he learnt VERY quickly that work came after he put his 'helmet' on- so now comes eagerly when we say " C'mon leo, put the helmet on"
  8. I don't know- all I know is that our working dogs never get bathed, or brushed (the very long coated ones get the odd comb thru during moulting), they only get spray on flea/fly treatment (permoxin)when needed, and we have never had one of them with any sort of skin problem or allergy (aside from the odd case of sarcoptic mange from killing mangy foxes .), and the 'collie nose' in those odd ones with lack of pigment. Our pups are born & raised on/in sand/dirt. they eat all sorts of dead things/bones, and play with very undesirable looking things they find
  9. re photos- have a look HERE
  10. You sound as if you are on the right track Now- where are the photos! ?
  11. PICASA did this fix in a minute- just a basic one
  12. What a lovely and touching tribute . So sorry he was taken early.
  13. Hi zoobird. You will probably find what you're looking for HERE
  14. and that is a lovely thing :0 Do you have a scrap book:) Those sorts of little memories/quotes would be a nice addition... then you could look thru it sometimes, and smile, perhaps, at the happy times . I have a quote here on my desk. "Don't cry because it's over- Smile, because it happened! "
  15. I like wiggle-bum dogs
  16. pumpitdog- it must have been very hard to lose a dog at a youngish age like that here are some links for you- I hope they may be of help. LINK LINK LINK
  17. cold black tea ( or slightly warm) use several times a day, just dribble into one corner of the eye like normal drops.. or use it as a flush.. It is gentle and does help we use it a lot here with 'dusted' dogs!
  18. Tyler Lucky pup, to have a safe run in which to enjoy the sun and the scents of outdoors If you don't mind the clearing up... put in a cardboard carton or two for him to jump on/wreck..and a large ball, like a soccer ball (NOT plastic) that he can roll around , throw himself on, and attack!
  19. I think the main reason mites don't show is that there are often not many around..and a scraping may miss them having recently had a sarcoptes infestation myself (courtesy of my piglet) I can vouch for the incessant and unpleasant itch
  20. The vet treated him without a skin scraping? Weird! The most likely is an allergy. It could be almost anything... :p grass, pollen, WANDERING DEW creeper, beef, food colourings, flea treaments, grains etc etc etc... What is he getting fed? and what has changed in the yard/park/garden with the onset of Spring? Oh- and a skin scraping should be requested.. only takes a minute, and mites can be seen, if they are present- that way , at least you'll know, and be able to begin 'disinfecting' the bedding/house, etc too !
  21. A cake I most definitely did NOT make :p LINK
  22. That second pic- that's straight out of 'Turner & Hooch" !! :p
  23. Agree with erny!! :p especially the fact of NOT 'rewarding' him inadvertently when he is showing those behaviours.
  24. secretkei- not much advice on his training, sorry... but please do NOT wrap the leash around your hand again... it could be worse next time :p if you want a short leash... just hold it further down towards the dog. The slack can just hang, or be loosely held with your other hand. I agree- when the dog feels/sees you wrapping the leash around your hand, he will start to get excited/anxious, as he anticipates what's coming!
