Sorry Cowenbree! I hope your girl is a bit better today!

We have been charged $10 per kilo over allowance with Qantas. We flew to Adelaide from Brisbane a couple of years ago. Brisbane allows dogs in the terminal but as mentioned Adelaide doesn't. We flew dogs as excess baggage out of Brisbane although we had to pick them up from the freight terminal on arrival in Adelaide. The return leg to Brisbane they were booked as freight.

Excellent! I'm sure they will be

Congratulations Baileys Mum Six sounds good! What's an average size litter for a Aussie?

I did try undewear with pads but found they manage to get them off. I just cover the furniture, etc and wipe up drops after her on the floor. If they do a good job keeping themselves clean it doesn't seem too bad. I soak everything later in cold water then napisan overnight. My male beagle had the 12 month superloin implant (which lasted 2 years ). He had no interest in my bitch and his testicles had shrunk up to about a third of their normal size.

My beagle bitch Gr Ch Orobay Optical Magic (Macey) has been mated to frozen semen from Am Ch Ha-Pennies Too Much Trouble (Spencer) Still hoping for puppies.

Fern's experience was not minor, won't do it again on her. What happened with Fern Rebanne? The incision was huge, as big as her subsequent c-section one, she reacted badly to something, the sutures or the antiseptic, and she was red raw until the stitches came out, lost huge amount of weight, she just didn't do well. Once the stitches were out she bounced back. When she had her c-section, different vet, there was no reaction at all. Could have happened after any surgery but it will be TC from now on, if needed. Not good Glad to hear Fern recovered Anne. In my case I don't believe it was anything to do with the vet or the way the procedure was carried out - just one of those thing.

Whooo congratulations !!! Beautiful babies in both litters!

Hi Angelsun What is actually involved in the procedure? Do they sedate the bitch, how long does it take, does the cervix have to be dilated slightly artificially to allow access? Why can't some bitches handle it? I know surgical AIs are a relatively minor procedure than for example a spey operation and I've just been unlucky in my case to have some problems with my bitch afterwards. It's interesting though that I have since found out another beagle breeder here in Qld had similar problems with her girl twice - she did have a normal mating resulting in puppies in-between - but no puppies from both surgical AI's.

Thank you lovely ladies

I haven't heard that anyone is doing TC AI's in the Brisbane area Whippets. Do you know of anyone?

Sorry, first chance I have had to get back on and tell you Macey is on the improve. In the early hours of Wednesday morning I was awoken by a strange noise. I turned on the light and there was Macey sitting in the crate with her head hung low making this groaning noise. She didn't even look up at me - just kept giving this moan sound every few seconds. To be honest it totally horrified me as I have never heard anything like it. Yes – human emotion came to mind – despair seemed appropriate. All I could think to do was put my arms around her in the crate and she stopped after a couple of minutes. Although I knew her general health was unchanged it is still frightening to see your animal in so much pain and feel helpless. The past 5 days have felt like weeks. So it was off to Manly Road Vet Hospital where nothing new was found – a good thing and hopefully everything would settle down in a few more days. They have decided that she is unfortunately had a had a severe reaction to the surgery and it is nothing more sinister. I can’t understand it as she had a surgical AI a few years ago and has had 2 c-sections since then with no problems. Funny enough, she has actually turned the corner overnight and a lot of swelling has gone apart from one of her back glands which is huge and now clearly visible whereas before you could only feel it. She will be crated for a few more days yet. I can't tell you how relieved I am. I think we will be lucky if she goes on to have puppies but you never know. Thanks for thoughts

We are off to Manly Road Vet Hospital as I am not happy with her. Thanks to all.

Thank you! Well it is all a bit of a mystery. After a lot of indecision about where to take her, I took her back to the vet surgery where the AI was done. They are not sure what is going on with her. They can feel the swelling but everything feels intact as far as they can tell. They confirmed that her general health is good and apart from the obvious pain she is in they are not sure what is wrong with her. They did suggest that perhaps she has torn a muscle but I'm not sure if that explains the enlarged gland (or that's what it feel like). She doesn't have mastitis so I don't know what it is. She has general swelling both sides but on the lump side it extends out to her flank and from the side it makes her look 4-5 weeks in whelp. She keeps turning around looking at herself even when walking and licking the swollen areas. The incision sutures are fine. She is eating, drinking, weeing and pooing - although the last comes with sound effects with the effort. Until the medacam kicked in late this morning, I would have sworn she was on her death bed. Even my OH was freaked out. She didn't want to move out of her crate at all and I nearly had to drag her out to toilet. I am going to keep her crated until Thursday (unless things get worse) and if there is no improvement will investigate further then. I don't know what else to do! I am hesitant about taking her elsewhere, not because of possible puppies as I couldn't care less about that at present, but if a reproduction vet doesn't know what is wrong, who else will

The frozen hot water bottles are fabulous - I promise they will fight over them as they get bigger!

Fifi - thanks I looked up "seroma" and it could well be that! It almost feels like mastitis but not in the teats but above them. Its not hard or hot and feels like fluid. I am taking her in tomorrow morning to have her looked at. She does seem to be in less pain than she was this morning but that may be down to the anti-inflammatory I gave her. Because her gums were good, no temp and a good appetite I have left getting her checked until I felt I could move her on my own - she screamed when I picked her up, which she didn't do yesterday when I had to move her. I did call into the surgery this afternoon and picked up some amoxyclav for her just to be on the safe side. I know it is not ideal to be giving antibiotics but thought it might be safest option even though there is no sign of infection. He also gave me something to cover the areas that are very red and irritated near the sutures to stop them rubbing. Hope it sticks. I must stress that I don't believe this problem is related to the vet who did the procedure. I just don't want to drive the 1 hour over to the surgery in the heat we are currently experiencing. I trust my local vet to check her out.

I'm having some dramas with my bitch at the moment that was surgically AI'd on Saturday. Bearing in mind she is a real sook, she is currently experiencing a lot of pain and swelling on one side that extends out to the rise where her hip joins her body (this is not where the incision is). She seemed much better yesterday Another thing is that the stitches are irritating her skin on either side of the incision - I guess the ends need to be that length but it must feel like fishing line scratching and poking into her. Any advice on what I can do about this would be very much appreciated! Yes, I spoke to the vet this morning but don't want to ring again just about the stitches. On the plus side she still has a good appetite (a adult beagle has to be on their death bed not to eat) and no temp and I have given her some Medacam this morning. I think with the pain and stress things are not going to be positive here. The transcervical AI sounds wonderful!

Beagle litter hopefully due on the 28th April. She's having a surgical implant tomorrow. Congratulations to all confirmed and fingers crossed for those waiting to find out.
