  1. I think 14 also. Let us know when she starts. Good luck
  2. I have a sporn harness for my male beagle and have found it wonderful. A ordinary harness is not great for a dog that pulls and often makes them worse.
  3. Lovely babies everyone Huge contratulations to all.
  4. That cracked me up! So true. I'm always explaining to people "its the prestige of winning" not the money or prizes They just don't get it and think we are .....perhaps we are!
  5. We've found that to be the case also when we have taken pups to preschool. Probably just that the breeders of these purebreds recommending puppy preschool to their puppy buyers and BYBs and pet shops don't bother.
  6. What a relief for you! I was going to say it might be from a toad but obviously not. Piggy Charlie I swear, beagles would eat themselves to death given the chance.
  7. Yes, as others have mentioned it can mean serious health issues. I would not be restricting her water intake in case there is a health problem until you have her checked out at the vet even though it means a wet bed. I would take her to the vet with a urine sample (not easy to get!) as they will definately need one.
  8. Totally agree Spottychick! She could have dumped them outside a vet surgery or shelter. Her intent was to kill the puppies or why would be put them in a plastic bag in a charity bin. Psychopath
  9. Yes, I've been wondering also. I didn't like this poor puppies chances
  10. Fingers and toes crossed for you Lilli. Let us know how she gets on.
  11. What an evil act. It's frightening to think there are people presumably that exhibit dogs that would do this to another exhibitor - more so that would put dogs lives at risk out of spite. Thank goodness she's OK.
  12. We have only been showing for 7 years so are probably still considered "newbies". My girl is about 50 points off her grand and will be retired from the show ring when she is finished which will hopefully be in the next month or so. We will bring her out for a few more specialities because we are hoping to gain a special award by our national breed council under a strict criteria. She has just recently turned 6 years of age but it is harder for a bitch to gain her grand than a dog if she has had time out for litters, seasons, and in the case of my bitch, quite a bit of time out for injury also. Added to that she will be the first bitch of her colour to gain her grand title in Australia. I guess to answer your question, no we will not be showing her after that. She will be desexed probably next year to hopefully avoid pyometra and reproductive cancers. I will be looking forward to doing some other activities with her in the future.
  13. Having said all that...I have one that howls if I take my other beagle out without him. Seriously, I'm no expert. Far from it Just did beagle rescue for a couple of years so you see directly where people go wrong.
  14. My two cents worth First off let me dispell the myth that all beagles are howling, digging maniacs that distroy everything in sight. Like all dogs, each pup within a litter will have it's own personality. Beagles can be hyper but really are quite easy to train, particularly with a special food treat (chicken is a favourite) that you only use for the appropriate behaviour. Most beagles that become difficult don't have enough contact with their family and little or no training. So when you are home please have her inside as part of the family. Get some child proof gates if you want to contain her to one area where you spend the most time (eg. family room). This will also make her easier to toilet train. A good puppy pre-school is invaluable for socialisation and training tips. Even at this early stage you could spend short periods of time doing some training with her, eg. 5 minutes twice a day. This helps establish you as the leader in her eyes and is not just about teaching her to sit, stay, etc. Get a good book on caring and training your puppy, I'm sure someone on the training forum can recommend one. That is way too much exercise at this early stage although important when she is older. Like Huski mentioned keeping your puppy in a crate all day home alone is not a good idea. Particularly if she is then crated during the night. If your yard is 100% safe during the day put a bed for her undercover outside with plenty of toys and things to keep her busy and hopefully she will be happy. Beagles love the company of other dogs. Perhaps when she is older you can consider getting a rescue beagle or other breed of dog that is out of the puppy stage as a companion for each other. Some of these beagles/dogs are beautifully behaved and it is often no fault of their own that they are rehomed. Already having a beagle should give you preferential treatment. As you already would know beagles are bred as a pack animal and can get very lonely. Lastly, if you live in a metropolitan area join the beagle club in your state. They usually hold events throughout the year that you and she will enjoy. Have fun!
  15. I have found an earlier topic on this and the main recommendation is to feed good quality adult dry food and some suggest vit C. The puppy in question is younger than the puppy in the previous topic and is only 15 weeks. The owner tells me his front legs are starting to look a bit east west. He previously was dead straight in the front. The main problem with this puppy has been diet. He just wouldn't eat dry or soaked puppy food. The minute you mixed it in with anything else he wouldn't touch it. He also wouldn't eat barf. In fact he has been a nightmare to feed, didn't matter about competition for food. I know people say that a dog won't starve itself but the little he ate was not enough and he was getting thinner and thinner. He has improved over the last couple of weeks and will eat, but not a complete diet (balanced) that may fix this problem. What would you recommend in this situation. Obviously a dry food would be best but he will not eat it. What would you suggest that you can be sure has the correct ratio of nutrition to perhaps help this problem, eg. calcium, phosphorus, protein and fat? His diet may have contained more protein than anything else by the sound of it. This is a puppy we sold to a pet home by the way but may be shown. I want to get onto it early in case diet is the problem. Much appreciated!
  16. Yes, a beagle breeder we know unfortunately lost a puppy at around 13 or 14 weeks a couple of years ago when eating a whole neck. Bad luck but it does happen. I agree with Sandra
  17. I agree with the above - just as a gesture of good will not because it is your responsibility. That is a huge bill and even though you are not obligated you have mentioned that you would like to pay something towards it but would feel embarrassed paying $100 or so. Why not just put down some concrete or something along the fence line. Not a huge expense just a bit of hard work. At least you will feel you have contributed something even though the situation it is not your fault.
  18. Hi Larissa I think you are doing the right thing in getting someone experienced to help out during your bitch's labour - it's exactly what I did and it was invaluable. Hopefully someone will be available nearby. Another thing you could do is ask if anyone has a bitch due to whelp in your area over the next couple of months. Perhaps they may be happy for you to attend the whelping. That's if they have an easy going bitch that won't mind a stranger in the room. Good luck!
  19. Sorry off topic..... Anything but very simple genetics does my head in
  20. What possible qualifications can "communicators" have ;)
  21. Waste of money IMO. I think sometimes people believe in what they need to believe in. There are always people who will prey on them. Yes - I should belong to the Sceptics Society.
  22. In the first couple of weeks we use heaps of layers. Newspaper, carpet, doona, blankets then vetbet, or in the case of the last litter cotton sheets as it was hot. Until the babies are weeing on their own you don't need to worry too much about wetness. We have had a swimmer puppy before so we don't want them laying on a hard surface. As Leanne suggested the egg carton foam is fabulous and we have also used this. When whelping lots of towels which we get from a second hand shop for next to nothing.
  23. Sorry about the lost babies Lolapalooza - so sad! Mr Stubs is beautiful - best of luck with him.
