  1. My girls get bathed every now with an oatmeal shampoo if they're particularly dirty...and I guess I'm lucky that they both don't have particularly long hair... Washed my labrador foster on the weekend in a hydrobath and forgot how much dirt and hair they moult!! The water was filthy! Even though he still looked so golden and yummy! Anyway my questions are what are some basic tips and advice for A) grooming out all of that winter coat! It just wouldn't stop!! Even after I brushed him for about 15mins with a slicker brush before I washed him! Afterwards it just kept falling and falling...heh. Guess I've forgotten what those thick water coats are like. B) what product or method to make their coats smooth/shiney/silky? So they look pretty when out and about trying to find new homes. Some brands of shampoo for dogs have shampoo AND conditioner... is it the same as human hair? Shampoo opens the folicles for cleaning and conditioner closes them up and makes the hair smooth? Is there a general product that gives an extra hint of shineyness or something?
  2. Bummer... No one on eBay is selling this style anymore.
  3. Ok I have a bone to pick.... There's only one photo!!!! tisk tisk!
  4. No I would not prefer that you just went and got yourself one and I'm glad that you're asking. But since you asked, I answered with my opinion! I figured that if after a year of training you still weren't getting the results you were after (not pulling) perhaps the training was confusing your pet. But anyway I'm sure you know what you're doing. So goodluck!
  5. Are you serious?? In the nicest way possible perhaps the reason she can't 'get' the walking on lead part is because her 'training' is all over the place and confusing. It really irritates me when people seek the easy way out instead of doing solid basic training. Perhaps you should be asking for additional training advice as after a year of training to 'walk on the lead, standing and all sorts of things you do when you show' you can't get what you're after, perhaps you're doing something wrong!
  6. Interesting... All these things one must consider!!
  7. Well there you go! I'm saying positive - but only in the right environment. Imagine if something went wrong though..and you had a free for all!?
  8. So we've always grown up teaching dogs tricks, commands and obedience without clicker training or attending classes. I now need some direction so am looking for a good club that I want to become a regular of....but in the mean time - should I get a clicker!? :D My girls are 2years oldish. One of them (staffy X cattle) is very trainable as she just loves to please so I'm just thinking will a clicker make it easier for me? OR will a clicker with always having a minimum of two dogs in my yard confuse the dog that I'm not training with? AND does a clicker work without food? I usually 'train' by getting unbelivably excited and so far Jeddas learnt how to sit, drop, bark, crawl, jump up in the air and stay with minimal food. Hmm. I feel like I've hit a wall because not only do I need more tips and ideas on training (am hoping the training club I join will help) but I'm also not sure on the best ways to go about it, and how else to train new things. What do you find with clicker training if you use it? Pros? Cons? Do you use a different method that you feel works even better for you?
  9. Ew. How annoying. I wish I had known what the generic signals were before I started on mine. I think the hardest thing for me to change (if I do end up changing) is retraining myself and to get myself out of the habit. ARGH! There should be a sticky of all the generic hand signals IMO!
  10. Hehe... I love it. Ok. Name: Tatiana Age (optional): Younger than most of you. <3 Location: Burwood NSW Rescue Group: DCH Animal Adoptions Time in Rescue: Mmm 2 years? Who can vouch for: Members of DCH (including NalaCleo and Liberty..and that's all I can remember. :S ) Preferred Breed: Any. Experience (if any): Have worked in kennels and kennel situations for about 5 years in total. Had dogs and animals around me since babyhood. DCH policy is that all dogs are:- Microchiped Vaccinated Desexed Heartworm tested Wormed Flea treated So yes yes yes! :D And they also take care of: Vet work if required And I take care of: Basic training/teach manners Can't house train dogs though as dogs live outside and in the garage. :D (Not my rules)
  11. I will not tolerate any of my dogs (my own or temporary foster dogs) not allowing me to take food out of their bowl or mouth. If any of them growl when I'm patting their jaws whilst they're eating/chewing I usually stomp next to them straight away growling 'NO!!' and then pat them again.....take their food/bone away and if they let me I give them a different peice of food (roast chicken usually) from my other hand which they didn't know about...praise them and then give them back their bone/food. I find I only have to do this once and the sudden growl/unhappy mum usually suprises them enough to know that food protection is not allowed. ETA: haven't tried pigs ears though!
  12. I'm not particularly impressed. But I can't talk. My dog knows 3 things! :p
  13. My OH bought me one of these after I showed him the website. Haven't used it for dog training yet but handy for walks... Except it doesn't fit around my hips even when it's on it's biggest cause I'm abit chubby :p ...sits higher up above my belly button. But I don't mind.
  14. So THAT'S what an obedience trail is....gotcha!
  15. Heh...check out this vid with the same dog...awesome!
  16. It's a dog on speed!! JOKE!
  17. How would you teach this if you're only trying to teach the change of position after months/years of doing poop wherever they want?
  18. Hmmm... I'm thinking I should really get a clicker and start on this clicker training...as I can imagine teaching this without one would take so much longer.
  19. How on earth do you manage a tricky dog when you have the other 2? Phew! Personally.. I'd do one on one walks with her. Obviously her fear has turned into a bit of a habit and you'll need to give her your full attention to help her get over it... well that's what I think anyway. Good luck though...just imagine how nice it will be to eventually have 3 heeling dogs by your side on walks!
  20. According to my mother a that is definetly not cold enough and a dog would never need a jacket. According to me if I'm freezing my cootie off and I'm SMOTHERED in layers and layers and beanie and scarf and gloves.....it's cold for my girls. Regardless of whether they're used to it or not. This weather is insane though...so cold already and winter hasn't even hit!
  21. Ok I googled slicker so I have one of those...what's a furminator and a shedding blade?
  22. I second this one. I am not to far away. I triple this. It's hard to get to Rouse Hill without transport but Leichhardts easy.
  23. This might seem like a stupid question..and sorry if it's been asked before.... But I'm finally noticing how much hair my (mainly white) girls are loosing because most of my warm winter jumpers are black! Typical... So anyway.. No matter how much I brush I never get all the hair (and ALOT ends up on me and my jeans anyway) so just wondering...what do people do or what brush is best to collect the loose hair whilst not taking away the main part of their coat that they're trying to grow to keep warm? Ones a cattle X staffy (so short coat) and the other has hair that's about an inch long.
