  1. Probably a good idea. I lost a cat about 10 years ago, suspected that she had ingested a poisoned rat. I didn't know at the time, just took her to the vet because she was unwell. Absolutely horrible experience, the vets threw everything at her and it looked like she was going to survive, then she died, it was shattering.
  2. As far as I am aware, electric fences are not illegal in Victoria, like they are in NSW. I ran 3 strands around 1/2 acre to keep my BCs contained as I lived behind a stockfeed and the guy there didn't contain his whippets and my younger dog would go berserk when he saw them. The electric fence kept both of my dogs well away from the fence, one zap was enough. On a side note two friends who helped me with it zapped themselves well and truly. They used a brand new car battery and managed to touch a metal cage. Then I absentmindedly decided day to check if the fence was on but forgot that I was holding the gate. That gave me a good kick too. Easier to buy a fence tester
  3. Years ago I took Jessie (now at the "Bridge") to the beach in the afternoon. I was sitting on the beach with a pile of stones throwing them into the water for Jessie. A guy and his Kelpie arrive and guy plonks his stuff down not far up the beach from me. Meanwhile Kelpie is having a crap. Guy is watching, but doesn't attempt to pick it up. I would have out to him, but he was a bit too far away to probably be heard. Guy and Kelpie jog off up the beach I told Jessie to "stay", marched up the beach, bagged the offending poo and was going to place it beside the guy's sports bag, but the "Devil" made me put it inside his bag ;) I sprinted back to Jessie and we both high-tailed it out of there I wish that I could have seen the look on his face when he opened his bag That is priceless :D
  4. Warrandyte along the river from Stiggants Reserve to the Bridge is all off leash. Mitcham has off leash parks around Cochrane St. A friend and I used to walk along a walking track off Boronia Road near Eastlink, (on the north side of Boronia Rd) I can't remember if it was off leash or not, as it was over 15 years ago. Koomba Park is the south side of Boronia Road ( That is an on leash park)
  5. That is not surprising. These inner eastern suburbs are well known as a stronghold for foxes. If I remember correctly the areas around Camberwell had a well established fox population in the 80's. They are a very resourceful animal and like all pests are adaptable and exploit the environment to their advantage. As SBT123 said "The only good fox is a dead fox" I hope that if it was a fox Ellz saw that it is found and exterminated.
  6. You did an awesome job Pipsal considering the circumstances. Well done kudos to you
  7. Relieved to read Hudson is on the mend. Very scary stuff
  8. RIP little man So sorry for you loss He looks gorgeous.
  9. I used polywire for my 3 strand fence that enclosed about 1/2 acre. The polywire broke fairly easily so I would use hot tape or plain wire next time, it was set up so that the wires ran from the energiser both directions to the front gate. I also initially used a battery energiser but found that when it ran flat, the dogs would know, so changed to a mains powered energiser, much better and the dogs stayed right away. I used star pickets and existing fence posts to put the insulators on.
  10. I bought lights through this seller on eBay. A friend and I split the cost, as her dogs lose theirs. We bought 10, I still have mine, she lost another one tonight LOL. It was cheaper to buy from the US even though the dollar wasn't that great. These retail for about $12-15 here I think Dog Lights
  11. Tuffie toys here as well. Can also recommend Cuzs.
  12. One border collie food drooler here.
  13. I too am popping my head in on my way through to light another candle. * grabs a cupcake* on the way through. Mmmm devine. Needed a sugar hit. Keep fighting Jed. Heartening to hear the positive update. I will return with some beef burgundy with garlic mash and crusty rolls later.
  14. Another vote for Tuffies and Cuzs. The Tuffie ring I bought has withstood being used as a tug between my two BCs, and they have access to it quite often. We have indoor cuz and outdoor cuz. The outdoor although a little worse for wear is still going strong after a few years. The indoor one is in pristine condition. Would recommend spending the money on a couple of decent toys rather than buying the cheap ones all the time. I also bought treatsticks from clean run when they had free shipping and my two love these also.
  15. I have a set of drawers with the wicker baskets in the lounge. It has all the dog toys and brushes etc in it. It also acts as a side table for my lounge. Only problem is the thinker of the family worked out where his toys are and will go and open the bottom drawer and help himself. Heartworm and wormers are on top of the fridge and crates are in spare bedroom with soft crates folded on top as the cats like to sleep there. Dog towels are in a lidded plastic box in the other spare room
  16. Nic, Maybe if you give a general idea of which side of Melbourne you live (presuming you are in Melbourne) some-one may be able to recommend a vet. I too would be wary of a vet that marketed packages.
  17. Another just checking in and lighting a candle Stay strong Jed
  18. No words, just Thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery
  19. Ouch Daisy I can understand a lack of motivation after a tooth extraction. We finally got out for a proper walk yesterday. The muppet is all healed, had his stitches out on Tuesday and now has a zipper and 4 button holes but he is fighting fit again. Thank goodness. My other boy also seems to have got over his injury too.
  20. Well done!! :D I have lurked in the newbie show thread and followed some of Toby's progress
  21. Hello Dogloggers, We have been M.I.A for a while, my older boy hurt his leg a few weeks ago, possibly playing with his i-squeak, so he has been kept quiet for the last couple of weeks, not much walking and no crazy stuff with balls. Then on Friday my younger boy had to have surgery for a bowel obstruction, he had a peach stone removed, no idea where he found it. Anyway he is home tonight and will have to also be kept quiet until he heals. He is doing okay, eating and drinking and I have never been so relieved to see to poo as I was tonight :D Enjoy your walks ,hopefully we will be back in full swing soon
  22. Fair point poodlefan I should clarify that you should be not judged for buying a rescue or pedigree dog. Each to their own. I have two pedigree dogs but would not rule out a rescue in the future
  23. Two border collies and two moggies here. Cats were here first, I am a late convert to dog ownership. Both cats were rescues and have taken dogs in their stride. I have at various times had up to four cats here.
