The legal road is hard but sometimes necessary, and IMHO no harder than living with the horrible knowledge of what happened, that is something faced every day there are reminders everywhere. If I have my timeline correct the salon owner rang you after you had reported the incident to the RSPCA? If that is the case I agree with whoever it was who said she is sounding you out as to what you will do more than expressing her sympathy over what happened.

I agree that this method is better than baiting from a welfare perspective, but considering the territorial nature of foxes is there any point culling when it is only opening the niche for foxes from outside the target zone to come in and stimulating reproduction anyway? There is nothing to stop the movement of foxes across the treatment boundary so what exactly is being achieved? Does the native population have time to recover before they are under predation? Could we actually be inhibiting the ability of native species to adapt to the predator by doing this stop/start population manipulation given the very real possibility that we could be fighting a losing battle? Wouldn't we be better off creating protected zones for natives under threat and erecting physical barriers that will ensure that the introduced species can't repopulate the area?

If I believed that culling was a good long term solution I would be more supportive of more humane methods of destruction, however in open populations such as found in most regions of Australia culling is a short-term solution at best so I'd rather invest research in something that is not a simple band aid. As far as foxes being any more 'vile' than any other carnivore, last thing I knew they generally eat their kills on the spot or drag them back to the den, unless they are disturbed in which case they have to leave it and go. Multiple kills are probably meant to go back to the dun but if the fox is disturbed it's not going to risk being shot, culling has selected out the ones who are silly enough to hang around for that so if people don't like it they only have themselves to blame for that behaviour ;) I watched a fox at my place with a lizard, it had already killed the lizard by the time I spotted it so wasn't much point interrupting, so I stayed quiet and watched it eat pretty much the whole thing except the claws, it jumped at every sound so I don't doubt that if it was aware of my presence it would have hightailed it out of there and dropped whatever it hadn't eaten. Anyway it's a moot point, culling is generally socially acceptable and will be for the forseeable future, and apparently now if you harbour no animosity towards introduced species you are labelled a PETA supporter!

I just got around to uploading the pics from the mini show a couple of weeks ago, Tiny's second ever show and he was an absolute star I was so pleased with him he behaved beautifully! My nieces were handling and I got to take pics, although my camera decided it was out of memory early in the piece so I ended up falling back on the phone which wasn't too great at a distance but anyway here are the latest pics of the ponies :) The hula hoop was a part of one of the games both the ponies did a great job considering how out of their comfort zone it was!

Stupid Surrender Reasons
WoofnHoof replied to Greylvr's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Saw another charming one yesterday, on the notice board at the vet was an a for an 8 year old yellow lab, they want to find him a home because they have moved to a rural property with no fences. I resisted the urge to ring them and enlighten them that fences aren't part of the natural landscape, humans are actually able to build fences it's not hard if I can do it anyone can. -
Yep we have but Pacers is no longer operating after the 31st of December 2012 so Im glad someone is covering at least some of it. Why is that? Come to think of it I've heard nothing on the email or FB about it

So sorry to hear about your girl I would like these please for my SV girl if they aren't already taken I will PM you. -
I would think that a veterinary behaviourist would be your best bet in this situation, they will be able to help you work out if your dogs anxiety is due to a medical issue or if it is a training or behavioural issue. I'm not in Vic so not sure who to recommend maybe ask in the training forum?

Pet Dogs More Friendly Than Frightening When Put To The Test
WoofnHoof replied to Leema's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would, my lawnmower cost me two and a half grand! All kidding aside I doubt either of my dogs would do much about a burglar, they are a good visual deterrant though :) -

Some are cover stories too, my sister dumped her two dogs at the RSPCA, the excuse she gave them was "we are moving and can't take them with us", they were moving to acreage 15 minutes away. Real reason: couldn't be stuffed catering for their grooming and behavioural needs. -
High Alt Levels In Asymptomatic Young Dog

My boy (husky) had an intrahepatic shunt and my advice would be prioritize the specialist, my local vets had never seen a shunt and on speaking to the specialist he picked up on it straight away even before bloods were done. I second ML's recommendation of University of Sydney my boy had his op there and even though my surgeon is no longer there they have a great team there. I went to the specialist for the ultrasound they detected it but weren't 100% sure whether it was inside or outside the liver, he was leaning towards inside and he was correct. The vets at USyd did another ultrasound when he arrived they said it was better than the one he had at the specialist centre in Brisbane I think it might have been a dye one? Anyway that's just to let you know all ultrasounds are not created equal. Regardless of whether or not you are dealing with a shunt in my experience your best bet is to get straight onto the canine internal medicine specialists they are more experienced in these out of the box type problems. -
High Liver Enzymes In Dogs
WoofnHoof replied to julesluvscavs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hope your girl is feeling better Jules. It's interesting when I first asked about liver shunts on here when I joined there was hardly anyone who knew about them, I think now with all the info vets are getting better at picking up these sorts of problems. I know when my boy was sick none of the vets there had any idea what was wrong with him, this was a practice of about 4-5 vets all of whom had been consulted on the case and no one knew, it was only the network I had at the time allowed me to investigate further and eventually find the cause. So it probably is more prominent than we realise its just that before a dog might get sick and die and no one really knew why, we hardly ever did bloods or autopsies, we have so much more information now. -
Keeping fingers crossed then Fanuilos :) Hopefully by the time I will be able to get myself a WSS they will all be under ANKC, would make things a lot easier and simpler that's for sure!

Am I the only one who thinks it sounds dodgy that a bunch of people on here all got pipped at the post on the same dog?
