  1. There are plenty of options in the field. Google & you will gain a wealth of knowledge .There are many breeds predisposed to suffering in this area & we own one of them.they can be hit by the 3 varieties . Royal Canin also do a dry for urinary issues but ,not sure on the long term use there. I now the idea of hills at first is to break down the issue & then you need to seek a food with urine PH breakdown level. Many have done home cooked using various foods with great success, adding water to there meals
  2. Also many breeds can be DNA tested prior to sale(that aren't from clear/clear parents BUT must also be micro chipped before this is done. In many breeds again first eye tests are also done between 6/8 weeks for CHC & the likes & again micro chipping is done prior to these tests being completed. The scary part about people like BB is they give there advice to others & then its like the blind leading the blind It is scary when they feel pups should be registered early to have papers ready when decent breeders still have testing & the likes to be done.luckily good pet owners seek out the good from the bad . I have to say in all the years of hearing issues with papers it is generally from breeders you would never buy from in the first place.
  3. $60 would be a basic end price. If your wanting the full Bichon trim at show lengthfull head etc etc then you would be looking at $100 plus depending on the coat condition on arrival
  4. nearly all our oldies have done the same & certaianly not dropped dead within 6/12 months or had cancer . With our guys we do feed puppy but obviously an old dog cant always stomach things but we find puppy, healthy fatty options within moderation & keeping warm & active works a treat. Like you we just like healthy reserves for the cooler months & my old boy at present is in a similiar boat happy/healthy tad under but has bad arthritis so not fussed but realize that reserve also helps them keep warm. He is coated all day & taken off at the peak of warmth, get feed mmin of 2 meals puppy plus euk Fish & potato which is his personal preference at present,he gets bits & bobs during the day & often in winter i do cook up a nice warm stew meal which he simply loves with his vegies, rolled oates, mutton
  5. What does the groomer say about the minis ears when plucked & clipped??
  6. No clipping here either unless totally required because the hair colour often grows back different & can alter the texture. Vets nurses go crazy with the clippers & some clinics are worse than others. I love my vet for this exact reason as they deal with alot of showdogs plus they also now that over the top clipping isnt required. You must always tell the vet & have it written on there sheet ,never leave it verbal unless you have a magic vet & staff
  7. Because we have in this topic but BB has chosen to know more just like the GSD & small dog thread . You cant educate those who dont want to listen .
  8. :D Are you saying that show quality means the potential to win a show :D It's not about the potential to win, any main registered pure breed is eligible for show entry in most situations and the judging determines the better examples of the breed. :D
  9. I am a full time groomer & cant tell you how often what people ask isnt whareally want see we make sure we question anything that we feel is odd.Not everyone will or has too as they will do what is asked so. So when you ask for this You will often end up with what you got the degree in which its shaved off can vary . May i ask who dropped him off & told the groomer what was wanted?? We get husbands who drop off & say short all over, having spoken to the wife on the phone we often end up phoning to confirm the request when it was different to what was aksed to be done. Wording to a groomer is very different to Joe Blow BUT groomers should ask & advice on the coat/ Looking at the dog i would hav touch the coat but trimmed the feet & maybe bum if an issue otherwise the coat is so fine & not long it wouldnt have been worth clipping.A good hand stripping of the dead coat on all areas would have worked a treat even for the ears & then trimming the edges
  10. This has happened for years. In many of the cases the people we now have been given paperwork but the people didnt see the need to place it in the dog file & turfed the info, We groom a dog & the people had an issue & they wanted to now if we would buy it back. That isnt an issue its stated in our paperwork the problem being this wasnt one of our pups. After standing there going back & forth & getting no where they where adamant we breed it ,we new we hadnt . They returned to the next grooming appointment & finally realized we didnt breed there dog .The scary part is these people have used our name when bitching to others because they couldnt get there facts right & the dog was only 9 months old. We new the breeder & also now the said breeder hands out a info package with all the details, contact # etc etc for there new owners to have on hand yet they didnt bother to refer . Many have no idea which is scary & near impossible to help people when they have such little detail such as there name & prefix . We have played the guessing game with people for many years about where the dog has come from & often it isnt a registered breeder but a well known BYB .
  11. yes ,we have had 2 dogs during teething who where so bad they went off there food. Like others have said dont pander or fuss. Dont add to much food or different things. With my guys i simply accepted the fact there gums where very sore & worked with what they would eat. Remember when they teeth badly it also affects there ears so they can feel like crap.I also found feeding when they where active to be the best ,whilst they lost some weight once the teeth where cut they returned to being horses eating the food they did prior. moisten the dry a tad more & i would try feeding the dry/wet separate. Dont leave the food down & dont make a big deal over it. My guys would eat happily from my hand so i did hand feed BUT it was done during training exercise only .
  12. If all else fails & you have a tumble dryer, zap the blankie for a few minutes & place on chair/bed . In our house its like a stampede when this happens
  13. Koki our specialist when it comes to an issue at hand dont care about the DNA,they can tell what the issue is as they did before the DNA came about. What our person cares about is a dog with an issue & dealing with that. The animal eye clinic in Melbourne is great ,not sure what suburb but we used them last year http://www.animaleyecare.com.au/aec/findus.html These arent our normal people but we used them on a visit early last year for eye checks. Our eye person also doesnt need a referral ,we must be lucky
  14. They could actually whack them all on limited then upgrade to main when they have a proper insight into the dog's quality at a more mature age than 8 weeks. So you would buy a pup under those terms ??
  15. Showdog, I completely understand what you are saying - perhaps you haven't been reading my posts clearly? I have said that we will be asking for a referral to a specialist, but that we are going to wait for the DNA test results to come back in first. I'm sure it will be beneficial to have the results before seeing the specialist, particularly if they come back saying she has hereditary cataracts. My question to nickojoy was purely a question as to whether or not his vet did pick it up or not. I have read your posts correctly BUT i wouldnt be waiting for DNA results because cloudy eyes can be so many other things & reality is dealing with eyes is all about getting attention quickly. You could wait for the results to come back & they are clear & then you will be scrambling to make an appointment which can sometimes be a long wait . That time frame of waiting could make or break eye sight. Having dealt with a number of dogs with varying eye issues i now that waiting isnt the best option. But you must do what your happy with . The eye specialist wont care about the DNA results because they are accessing the issue infront of them not the piece of paper
  16. All of my breeders over the years have always had the papers ready when collecting the puppy, 8 pure breed dogs in total and again 6 weeks ago with our new puppy. Seems that some breeders can manage to supply papers on collection without a problem Didnt answer my questions?? Just because you breeder register early doesnt mean they get it right?? What ratio do there pups go on main/limited?? . I could register early BUT i prefer to place the pups on the correct register .If your breeders can access very early who is show/pet & the likes great they must have some real superstars in the show ring?? I have owned from others now 18 dogs & never got the papers on the day & that is over a 25 yr period & from breeders who i admire & love there ethics.
  17. Same here.never had an issue or query either. Black Bronson how many litters have you breed, how many pups have you evaluated between the above ages,at birth which pups would you put on mains/limited?? In breeds that arent born with the colour what colour would you list on the papers at this early age?? Are you able to tell which ones have faults ,bad mouths, poor movement?? Please inform us
  18. Did you have to see a specialist to work out what the problem was or did your vet pick it up? How did you know something was wrong? I think you need to understand that a vet can see signs that can lead to certain eye conditions but your normal vet can not give you a defiant answer to any eye condition as they do not have the qualifications or the equipment that is required to diagnosis these conditions & any secondary condition that can be associated.
  19. Depends on what exactly your drying & the end result. I have both kinds & they are used for difference jobs. Also consider the pressure of the dryers & the coats in question. For me some are too strong & blow the coat dry to quickly .others arent powerful enough ,some are to hot etc etc
  20. Yep how much do you give, how much exercise does the dog get, what sort of daily treats
  21. Unless your vet is a specialist she cannot say it does/doesnt have dry eye as this is tested by drops & a pressure stick. Sorry but i wouldnt be waiting to see what happens irrespective of the DNA test. But each to there own. Having had dogs with catarcats,PRA,glaucome i now the importance of keeping on top of things in young dogs
  22. Our oldies, get (if co operative) nice warm bed,we use vet bed alot which is great in the cool weather, hot water bottles/wheat bags or the snuggle disc(which ever takes your fancy). We do have coats which some like/ hate . We find the main thing is just having a nice cosy spot & in our house the fav spot is the crate covered over
  23. Yep ,of all the breeds i own/ed i reckon each one has been different .very confusing . But as you now of to the eye doctor :D
  24. You need to go see an eye specialist & i wouldnt be waiting for the DNA test to come back. Cloudy eyes can be created by many things not just HC & until correctly diagnosed you will have no idea. Medications, poor diet, diabetes, cushings disease & the list goes on can all be associated with eye sight issues BUT only a specialist will be able to confirm . Was her eyes ever checked before given clomicalm It seems many vets hand this drug out without looking at all aspects whether that be eye sight/hearing, its always labelled as fears/anxiety. You need to see a specialized & see what it is & then look at all options because the cataract removal surgery doesnt always work & i do now of more failures than good personally but that is just a small drop in the ocean. If she has cataracts you need to ensure her eye pressure is correct which a specialized will check ,your normal vet can not do this. If i remember correctly the main ingredient in Clomicalm can cause dry eye or be a pre cursor to Glaucoma (someone may now more )
  25. Dogs are no different than people & often people expect to much without thinking about the older dog in question. In our house it works both ways, are oldies have an oldie area, whilst they are social there comes a time where they dont want to be annoyed, overwhelmed by a young pup. Our young pups also arent allowed to torment the oldies. Both parties have rules, the pups MUST learn there is a time & a place BUT above all you need to read the other dogs body language. It sounds like it gave plenty of warning signs that werent listened too to by the humans & the oldie has gone to the next level. people need to understand that warnings signs are given for a reason & you need to learn to back off & do things slow & steady & in small doses. How old is the oldie? Does it have any medical issues??
