  1. Ultimate pup oh so wrong infact the boarding associations have very indepth meetings with the manufactures & there head honchos yearly & this year the 3 yearly was the topic & infact you learn a whole lot more from the horses mouth. Titre tests do not prove anything except at the time the tests where high, next week they can be low. All kennels are very aware of vaccs & the views of some people but until there is legal guarantess to the claims of titres, vacc & all other stuff vacations are the safe guard for liability. When you work in this industry & have to pay out insurance etc etc you can critize all you want. I now off a kennel that accepts homopathic/titre & they have had more outbreaks than kennels that accept yearly vaccs
  2. Have used c5 for over 20 plus years on many many dogs with no issues. We run boarding kennels & yes it is a requirement that all clients have C5 plus is a code of ethics of CABA membership
  3. Agree with cosmolo & i would aslo seek the advice of an experienced breeder/worker & if possible look for a breeder that does the fields your after
  4. When it comes to grooming a table is well worth the investment considering it kills your back gropping on the ground & it takes twice aslong. Whilst grooming should be enjoyable it shouldnt be a bribery game or something that takes forever to achieve nothing. Grooming does often require the tough love approach. I would scrap the schmackos, the dog is being rewarded for doing nothing. Providing the tools are correct & you can ask the breeder unless they told you which to buy, also ask the best method to use them & how they would deal with grooming. Many people over man handle, have a running conversation with the dog & use food, toys etc all things that dont need to be done. Certainly use a treat for good manners on the table & teaching it table acceptance but only use the treat when you do non brushing table exercise ,ie getting on,standing nicely & then straight off, dont brush when treating. When you do brush be firm & confidient, tell the dog its "key "words,(stand, stay) ,brush with a plan before you start & stick with it.Dogs that dont like brushing is either due to not being done enough, having too many knots that it hurts or just being totally confused as to whats expected & the handling by the humans. The grooming table is nuetral ground .
  5. Dremel you buy from bunning ,its battery operated & is like an electric pencil sharpener(having a real brain fart day ).Bastard file you also get from bunnings, its a heavy duty file & you use it like a nail file in humans. Many dogs prefer the file action as its quicker & you do get a better finish, other hell dogs prefer the dremel. As for nail files ones that are good quality & are the shape of scissors & you cut,the guillotine type are all silver you stick the nail in & cut,it isnt a comfy one for dogs & they hate them. Personnally on a beast type dog i would go for nail file first
  6. I have had a dog with a trolley & it isnt any easier,my dog hated it & was terrified, you had to supervise at all times as they can get stuck in corners, areas extra & not get around, out or move, some of the trollies if they tip over dont release the dog & there stuck in the trolley until found/removed plus ofcourse the other thing to consider is just like humans each dog has a level of survival & will.My boy had the will & i had the means of being at home but it was like looking after a disabled person 24/7,whilst he was still with me for another 7 yrs certain activities etc where halted due to the dogs disabilities because as he aged his needs became more high maintance. I command anyone that gives a dog a chance aslong as people fully understand what they may be committing themselves too for the next 10 plus years, even house /yards arent always suitable & you need to readdress (if the trolley is used) or arthritis is there with stairs etc
  7. I presume your cutting the dogs nails whilst on his back?? The problem with people cutting nails is they take to long, overdo the calming, praise & bribery & use the wrong technique & nail trimmers. I would consider getting a dremel for the rotti, always trim with the dog standing & trim like shoeing a horse. Get someone to hold the head & if bitting is an issue use a muzzle, the time spent fending the dogs teeth makes the job long & drawn out. If using clippers make sure they are suitable, many use the Guillotine type & the dog hate them, even try a bastard file. Cutting nails should be quick & simple, even with a pup people give them treats, toys etc & it takes longer & the dog starts tow orry when things dont go there way plus there wanting to play with what there given instead of listening to the commands
  8. I wouldnt consider the arthritis as minor & if the dog is in pain now at this age it isnt going to get better & now matter what the only way to help is via drugs. I have seen a dog with bad arthritis & it was in alot of pain despite all help Whilst i havent had a dog go through this i have owned a dog that required spinal surgery & the after care etc is very hard work & i was lucky & worked from home. I agree the owners should certainly have a very good chat with the vet & have a severe family chat, the surgery can weight a tad longer if there not fully comfortable. PTS isnt easy but there are times where it is a good option
  9. personnally i would be buying a crate & training your goldie to use it. I think what you need to remember is this pup will have no idea about its new home, you as owners & wont have the full trust of anyone it will still be in the Settling process which for some pups can take longer. It wont be a case of of who the other dogs are but a case of whether your pup has adjusted to its new home & owners by that overwhelming time especially with the arrival of more unknown people Given the type of day that xmas is i dont think it will be the best time for meeting the family but if the dogs have to come then i would be making a safe area for the pup, even buying a baby gate & confining it to the bathroom, toilet etc for its nap & time outs. As to older dogs knowing there pups dont believe that dogs interact in different ways plus the way its been trained. Its important to realize the next few weeks are crucail & any bad experience can be an issue for life
  10. Parvo is via the poo not urine, dogs can be carriers but not have it. We lead train our pups out the front & on the road. If my area was rampant with parvo then i would re-adjust my planes, parvo is a devasting disease & whether double vaccinated or vaccinated they can still get it. Socializing at home to weird nosies & things can make an enormous input to the outside experiences.Whilst lead training place objects on the ground, create placid noises & build up,dont be fragile in there secure world but use commonsense. Olders dogs can bring the disease home & expose young pups so its important to use commonsense there too. Parks, footpaths are the areas dogs use daily & toilet so there high risk areas. The thing is people can bring it home on there shoes etc if treading in poop & often the spread happens during kiddies sporting events at the local oval, school etc. I would certainly check with vets on the parvo risk in your area. Many years ago with our first dog we vaccinated her twice yearly, she got parvo twice & it was rampant in our area but the offending park was the local sports club
  11. Placing feet up doesnt mean pick up,many dogs will just place there front feet up as a gesture & a simple pat does just as much. Many people tend to over pick up puppies because its cute but it isnt always what the pups want or at a time they feel comfortable.I mean its like having a relative that everytime you visit you cringe with the thought of what about to happen.
  12. Personnaly i would get my fold up chair & sit quietly out the front of the house going no where but giving her a chance to view the outside world, accept the noises, people etc.Do in very short spurts & only leave when she is being good with lots of reward. Is she a black or black/silver??
  13. Sounds to me like a typical irish wolfhound, i would be contacting the breeder & asking there thoughts.Whilst many trainers are good some have no idea on some breeds & what makes them tick. For example if i was to do what your trainer said with my breed you would create ferals. The wolfies i now & have handled in the ring arent over the top but instead enjoy the company of there human & there soothing hands/voice. The reason people fall for this breed is because there so gentle, laid back & quiet.I maybe wrong but it sounds like what she wants you to do isnt in there breeds nature as such .
  14. I agree with Tony take control ,the dog isnt the leader you are & the way you deal with bathing will mould it for life. Make sure you have a no slip mat in the bath, many people dont use a mat ,dog slips/panics & hell breaks loss.Be orginanized before you start, have the gera ready & reachable, place pup in bath & with a firm tone tell it to stay, dont have a conversation or plead with it or make a big deal its a very firm but simple stay. Some will fill the bath prior & bucket the water we use a tap attachments but also have the hydrobath but we deal with dogs every day & people everyday that say there dog wont let them bath them, they will & they do .It is no different than a child but many people accept way more from the dog & remember 4 mths is easy at 12 months it will be 40 kilos Be firm, the dog isnt made of china & you are the one in charge. If dog performs have a good grip(use a fixed coallar for grip),it will chuck a tainty but its just that a tainty your response is what makes the results. You can also use buckets outside but the same thing applies it isnt a game ,you are the pack leader you set the rules & with patience the dogs will understand & enjoy its experience
  15. What people forget is for 2 yrs this goldie has had it all to himself,he has had a daily routine where all that mattered was him, puppy comes along & the dynmaics change, older dog suddenly has to share & puppy just wants to be a pup. Its important to allow them to sorts things out but you can also do things to minize unneeded happenings. We dont feed our dogs together ,whilst we dont have food issues,we sepearte because its easier ,we now who has eaten what & you dont allow bad behaviour to happen. As to the grumle at sleep time ,besides putting it in its place i dare say it just didnt want to have that cosy feeling.the dog has been to the park ,run around & most probaly just wanted to rest, its normal routine & the pup most likely didnt want to & the older dog just had enough. You also need to remember the older dog could start to resent the pup if its always getting in trouble, whilst you dont want issues, you need to give the older dog a chance to have the changes to its routine aswell & accepting the pup in all aspects.
  16. Our GH where never destructive but i belive the problem is you not treating him like a dog . We all luv our dogs but they are dogs & feel secure when treated as such.I would also say hes getting mixed messages about whats right/wrong/\. For example running around with flower pot(cute) was the dog given the flower pot or did he pitch. As to chewing the furniture i dare say pup is teething badly & they will chew anything without releasing for the soothing action so its important to have variety without quanitity & obove all its time for training
  17. Also remember a humping dog is also a higher risk for back injury. I agree with poodlefan though its not something to laugh at but to address asap espeicailly in a giant breed. It isnt funny when there older /stronger & more set on what they want.I personally have scars from dogs in boarding that have tried humping especially if they have dew claws & i can guarantee you the kids wont stand a chance. I agree also with teaching dog to sit ,then rewarding in a quiet calm fashion,if everyones reacts by laughing/excitement the dog will see it as something fun & still get hyped up.Its important to to be quiet calm & non reactive to what the dog is doing. Also be aware off the signs prior to the dog humping, you can generally see the starting of the humping action & its important to use the "method"there & then & its important the kids are told aswell.Remember if your kiddies friends come around the last find you want is for a giant breed to be humping them & some are very determined .
  18. Whilst your boy may have been great when you got him he didnt have company to do the same things so it isnt fair to compare her to him when the whole scenario isnt the same. She is doing exactly what littermates do play rough & hard. She has left her littermates & now has a new friend, she doesnt understand that he older just someone new to play with, give them time the novelty will wear off soon & harmony will come but be patient . If he is happily accepting her behaviour dont get involved, she doesnt understand why your tapping her bum & if your always clapping, calling she will switch off, just like humans after hearing your name get called so many times you get ticked off or just ignore . Shes been there a week, probaly doesnt now her name fully & is getting use to the whole new routine

    Outside

Dachshunds are very much people dogs & will use there voice to any advantage after all to do there job properly they must bark non stop to alert the handler to the badger. Dachies can happily enjoy the outside & in all the years of being around dachies most frollick around to the hearts contact but they are also very devoted to there owners & can become way to clingy if allowed. Dachies are certainly one breed that you must set the rules & the key is dont spoil them, yes there little but there a very hardy breed & a breed tha needs outside life to keep the body in good condition especially there back. As with any pup you introduce things in small doses but unless this dog is making so much noise the whole neighbourhood is disturd then your neighbours cant cause that much hassle & infact if you speak to them emphasis that the little noise mad now is training in process for whens its older ,im sure your neighbours do things that annoy you. Does the dog have a doggy door & its own access in & out.We fined dogs that can enter in/out on there own dont panic as much as those dogs where the door is completely shut
  20. We dont ecommend beef mince as it can cause all sorts of skin issues ,the runs. As the dog has been health checked my theory would be. *feeding to much. *too many treats * leaving the food down for too long allowing it to graze & take its time to eat. If it was mine i would cut out a meal ,make sure the bowl isnt left down longer than 5 mins & no treats at all.
  21. In our house all main meals are done ins epearte areas,no ne fights but some eat quicker so its easier to give each dog there peace whilst eating so they feel relaxed & not threatened, all get treats together . It sounds like maybe somone has made an attempt for her food & now she is sticking up for herself when she has it

    Frustrated

You said'I have only had her one day & my patience is already wearing thin" That is frustrated. Okay not house sitting but your puppy sitting & its still the risk you take when voluteering to watch a pup. Helpful maybe not but just remember the pup is just as confused .

    Frustrated

Your frustrated just think of the pup its home routine has changed new house lay out & someone who gets frustrated when it wees. This what happens when people house sit you have to take the good with the bad
  24. Compatable comes in many forms. The first question w say to people is how is the first dog with other dogs??Does it have social manners, does it now its boundries with other dogs ??Is the second dog going to be a companain for it due to boredom or is the second dog wanted by all family members. How old is the first dog,how active,do you go for walks, play ball or is it a couch potatoe
