  1. I define being My Dogs socially responsible owner by - understanding his breed traits and behaviour - providing correct diet and fresh water - ensuring that he lives in a safe as possible environment - socialise him to environmental factors that I believe that he will be subjected to in the future - ensure that he has regular personal contact with all family members - ensure that all health and maintenence routines are performed - regularly handle him all over including feet/mouth/ears etc so that if he is required to go to the vet he has been handled properly - training to include basic sit, wait, down commands - he is a flock guardian other basic obedience is not important in our situation - ensure that all visitors to our home are educated on what we expect of them regarding Jake - remove him from possible threat situations or situations I feel may conflict e.g large groups of visitors (he is placed inside) plus much, much more
  2. I can imagine some backlash on breeders HYPOTHETICALLY lets say my pure breed dog got swabbed and came back as a cross, now I complain to the breeder and have my DNA RESULTS as proof, as I have paid $x for a purebred dog with papers. Under Consumer law would I be entitled to a refund as it is not the "item" I paid for? Would the DNA results be considered as evidence? Would the breeder have to DNA test their dogs to challenge it? What are their accuracy percentages? I think a lot of people could get very disappointed in these "results". I have no inclination to get these tests done at all, but to me I think advertising it as a common service will open up a can of worms.
  3. Duckies name on NCIS is Donald Mallard what about Donald
  4. I think because of the processing - hygeine etc and some of the by products I got given about 250 kg plus of Nutrience dog and cat food today , if it was for human consumption imagine the money I would save on my weekly shopping bill, pity I am vegetarian though
  5. Mine will not go over our property boundary, he will go between our 2 properties if we are next door, he generally stays on our 5 acre house block. Our gates are padlocked at all times and there are signs on the gate, if people that he does not know come over he is taken inside or put in a safe area. He is naturally distrustful of strangers and no he would not be trusted with someone that he does not know, we have made very clear house rules when it comes to him. I have absolutely no hesitation in saying that I wholeheartedly believe he would defend what he percieves as a threat with his life. After saying that he is incredibly gentle and tolerant of those that he is bonded too, but even us adults announce ourselves when we go outside in the dark. He is very well known in our area as "the big teddy bear", but all of our neighbours have been educated on his breed. He can be apparently snoozing one second and in an instant running the fenceline chasing a motorbike, his agility is amazing. It is a big responsibility owning and understanding his breed, one that we as a family are totally committed to. He has been heavily socialised being used as a demo dog for my old students and in public he is very good, it is in his home that he is in a working frame of mind at all times. I am truly amazed by his breed and how much my family has gained from him joining us. It is not without it's challenges though as he only allows my mother to stay at the house when we are gone and even then she has to watch him like a hawk as he tolerates our absence for just one day and then he will go searching the other property for us. As we live on a rural block we do not have people popping in or kids jumping over the fence to get their ball, he is happy to allow neighbours to talk to us over the fence (stock fencing), he is also happy for them to come in if he knows them or if he has been introduced. If someone jumped the fence or came towards him in a dominant or threatening manner it would be different. Last night our neighbour had about 15 screaming kids in their pool which he can see very clearly, he had no interest as they were not on his property. Their 2 young cocker spaniels on the other hand have no clue about boundaries and regularly come over and chase our animals, luckily I have heard his barking and removed him but I dread finding some little blue roan and red heaps in my yard. The owners have been warned constantly but they clearly don't understand that I am not being over sensitive
  6. A kangaroo would only hop onto my property once, you see them 20 metres away along the boundary line but never on my fence. In Jakes case unless it is introduced it is automatically a threat, that is why I have to be vigilent went it comes to who and what comes to his territory.
  7. I must say I love my little crossbreed dog with all of my heart, no other little dog could take her place, my cross breed horses are just as loved and as valuable to me as my pure breeds too. I also have 2 hybrid Galah cross Corella babies and a pure Galah, my household has the best of both worlds and while I certainly would never cross breed myself I wouldn't not welcome them into my home. My CASD is a better Flock Guardian than my pom cross and my pom cross is a better snugglepuss than my CASD. Shannon is my companion and "motherer" of all furred and feathered babies and Jake is the "Protector", together we have a complete team oops sort of double post with additions, sorry

  9. I can personally atest to the fact that my CASD's Flock Guardian skills are incomparable to any other dog that I personally have met, I have also never met a dog that is so entrenched in natural instinct. He can not be treated like my other dog at all, it is a learning curve learning how to live with him and his "CAOdom" qualities.
  10. My CASD fits in as our car has high clearance and I can fit a large Dane size Great Crate in too. The roof vents help circulate the air and stop the tray getting dirt/dust sucked into the back on dirt roads, the side windows with dog mesh can stay open. We also have the liner as well.
  11. We have a Navara with a canopy but we have the front window open for a bit of circulation, roof vents and sliding side windows with dog mesh and Jake has actually been in there once
  12. Back when we sold puppies years ago one of the last puppies we sold was from a registered breeder that couldn't sell it, it was an uncommon breed. One of the courier drivers that comes to us is a Registered Breeder of a Bull Breed and makes comments such as "Pity you don't sell pups, we could help each other out". I have seen Registered Breeders take accidental litters or pups that had issues before to a shelter . I would say it certainly isn't common, but it would happen. Then again I know of someone that buys puppies on main register and breeds pups for the pet shop market, she also crosses them so it would be easy just to take copies of the parents papers and show clients, the pups may not be registered but the parents were.
  13. Some Canine bodies allow Registered breeders to sell puppies to pet shops I believe
  14. RL01 how is your boy recovering/healing?
  15. My CASD is a Flock Guardian and that is what he does, he much prefers doing his "duty" than being a family companion, he enjoys our company for limited times and he stresses if taken inside or off the property. He is heavily bonded to all of us but watching his surroundings is far more important than cuddle time. Here he is at one of his lookouts
  16. Good luck we are a large store and we see our rep every few months or so , the other companies come in at least fortnightly try this www.advancedpetnutrition.com.au there is the breeder section
  17. RLO1 you most definately did the right thing, don't feel guilty at all you should feel proud of yourself for looking out for his best interests. The only thing he will regret is that there are 2 less things to lick! What will he do with all of that spare time?
  18. That's great Kimzy let the vet deal with them ;) , you do not need the stress, I am glad she let you know that she is still with you and I hope that gave you a tiny bit of peace
  19. Found them.. little fluffy dog and the cat under the bed, they looked at me, so that was their greeting. CASD laying in a pool of water, gazed in my direction and wagged his tail. Yep I'm feeling the love ;)
  20. I just realised I have been home for 10 minutes, the kangaroo came out to greet me, but I am sure that I have 2 dogs and a cat ....must go investigate.....
  21. Normally most vets don't let them go home so soon after an anaesthetic, just in case there are complications but they must have been confident that he was awake enough to leave. It is only a small surgery for males, but at his age there would be some more swelling I would expect, keep him calm and make sure he doesn't keep licking at it.
  22. geez that's quick to pick him up, did they bite them off? Just joking that is great that he came back with a clean bill of health, great that your breeder took the time out to meet you there too
