As a new mother you are conscious of every movement (I called it new mum paranoia), I can not see how a dog could inflict 50 punctures wounds without the dog or baby making enough noise to alert the mother in the same room. That poor, poor baby another preventable tragedy
-
I would say that having his vet also being a Councillor would have also helped. Regardless what a deserved outcome, I hope the poor old man can live out his days in peace

I really, really wanted a pup from a certain breeder and after two years of waiting and no luck as the bitch didn't take I looked up the DOL Breed Pages and looked at the CASD. A couple of weeks later Jake arrived, it was pure coincidence and even though it was hard I am glad we made the decision on the CASD rather than the Maremma. Sometimes seredendipity makes decisions for you

When will people realise how precious children are? If you decide to be a parent, then bloody well be one and be responsible. Another unnecessary tragedy that will no doubt have an everlasting affect on that child and also have serious repercussions for the dogs and their breed

It would be a shame to have a thread like this shut down over a personal issue. No disrespect intended to anyone, but we have seen it all before and then all of the great info and insights disappear too

While this is almost too horrifying to contemplate and I feel so sorry for the family and that poor dog I hope that the irresponsible owners of the attacking dog are de3alt with severely. I too hope that the attack didn't go on for 90 minutes, which is also very difficult to comprehend. I wonder where his friend was during this time? I think it is important that we teach our kids the importance of dialing 000 in emergencies and I believe this case that would have been justified.

Ideas For Ways To Bond More With My Dog
casowner replied to FranVT's topic in General Dog Discussion
Jake is nearly 3 and has only just started liking attention, even as a baby puppy he wasn't interested in us. I didn't think he cared if we were there or not but if we go away even for one night (with my mum staying at the house) he will take off onto our other property. The other week we got home at 12pm and he was gone, spent over an hour searching for him on the other property and up and down the roads with no luck. We got home and there he was on his bed with muddy paws panting, he had obviously seen us driving in the paddock and made a bee line home My keeshond would get excited to see me then go off to do her own thing but my gsd heart boy (RIP Chieftan) and my little pom cross girl were/are my constant companions. I do think breed has a lot to do with it and all animals have their own personalities. You may find that as Luuka matures her affection to you will increase -
I would say that GCCC registrations for bull breeds and crosses will fall dramatically when registration time comes, especially if people have registered them as Am staffs and crosses to help prevent them being falsely labelly APBT.
-
So does this mean that the council can go through their registration data base and pick out the am staff and am staff crosses and seize them all because of the ruling?
-
Sympathy factor ZERO Sorry that the dogs suffered pain, unfortunately it is hard to hit a moving target and the clean kill goal wasn't executed Massive sympathy to the farmer, goats and baby maremma pup that died the week before after being attacked. Keep your f'n dogs on your own property or deal with the consequences

I always tell clients that it is vital to maintain clips throughout winter for various reasons including the fact that when in "winter coat" they take longer to dry and if they do mat the skin can become infected as it can't dry out properly. People also tend to still put coats on their fluffy dogs in winter speeding up the matting process. Any pics of your newly beautified babies?

What will that mean for registered Am staff breeders in QLD? Could puppy buyers come back at them for selling a restricted breed if they ran into problems? Very scary times ahead indeed

A Surprise In My Brother's Border Collie Litter! - Updated
casowner replied to Ashanali's topic in General Dog Discussion
You can see very faint markings on him/her it will be interesting to see how the pup matures -
As with the other posters I am very sorry that this has happened with your pup, but I also agree that blaming the owner, not the breed is the right way to think too. I hope you have reported the attack, if not for your piece of mind but for the simple fact that it may prevent another incident in the future. I admit certain breeds make me nervous and to be honest dobes are one of them due to a trauma and it is sad that a trauma can affect the way you see a certain breed for the rest of your life. Among the many great danes we had when growing up we also had a dobe, who in the end was euthanased due to people and dog aggression and in the end stock killing. I was only a young child and maybe it was the way he was raised, but I do remember as a young pup he would growl. . I took my family for a walk to a small residential lake today so my son could see the ducks and a family with a swf thought it was amusing that it was pulling at the end of the leash growling and barking and not once did they try to restrain it. My first comment to OH (I admit shamefully) is that I should go home and get my 80kg CASD and take him for a walk past them and see how comfortable they felt. People need to realise that they are in control of their animals and that they are as responsible as much to their dog as they are to the community. Dog ownership isn't just about loving your own animal it is about being responsible for all of it's needs and ensuring that he or she and those that they interact with are safe. I believe that BSL punishes the breed, it doesn't punish the type of owner that people seem to think they attract. Those types of owners generally do not obey the laws anyway and if those breeds are unavailable to them I am sure the next best thing will do. The carer of that particular dog that attacked your puppy is clearly in the wrong and should be punished. Unfortunately if she said that all of the other dogs have had puppies before then she clearly has no clue what being a responsible owner entails.

I am very sorry bluestaff, one of my ponies is very tiny and I always worry about him getting attacked by a stray dog. I keep him in with a donkey and my arabian mare who are very protective but they are just so fragile. RIP little pony and damn you d!ckhead dog owners

How Does This Happen - Do Councils Have Any Control?
casowner replied to slk's topic in General Dog Discussion
Depending on what the dog limit is within your Council I doubt that they have approval for it -
I believe that the OP is planning on showing the mastiff and that the female isn't desexed, until you get the issues sorted I agree that you need to keep them separate or else there may be heartbreak ahead. Speaking to a behaviouralist that can come out and see the behaviours and pack dynamics should really be done sooner rather than later. Justin I don't understand your comment about behaviouralists, most trainers didn't wake up and decide they wanted to train dogs they were generally animal lovers/owners that have a passion for dog behaviour and modification. To the OP good luck From what I know about bull breeds "play fighting" can escalate pretty quickly to the point of injury or death, it is something I would never take lightly especially if the OP says it got so bad that they had to be separated

I like to see where the dogs are housed and litters are raised. I would like to see pictures of the dogs just being dogs interacting with their family and other animals not just stacked photos.

Pet Shops Who Sell Rescue Dogs, Hmmm, Wtf?
casowner replied to Eileen's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think it would be important that those who were showcasing their breed brought in adults rather than puppies to minimise the "oh how cute I want one" scenarios -
Pet Shops Who Sell Rescue Dogs, Hmmm, Wtf?
casowner replied to Eileen's topic in General Dog Discussion
When I first started at the store 7 years ago puppies were sold there, after a couple of months I stopped it. I personally screened/interviewed all prospective owners and I promise a very small minority that wanted to buy a pup actually ended up buying one. I started off with the 10 or so worst traits for the breeds, the financial responsibility, health maintenance, ongoing costs, need for training/socialisation, grooming requirements etc etc. I questioned their motivation for wanting a puppy and then referred them onto sites such as this and recommended that they go to an All Breed show with their family to discuss their needs with breeders to see what breed of dog suits them. If they still wanted a cross breed I would give them a list of questions to ask the people selling the pups. No one was able to buy a pup the day they saw it. In recent months I have had the typical people trying to off load pups as usual and then I give them advice and send them on their way. I know I could get these dogs a better home than those who are interested in getting them off their hands so it creates a bad taste in my mouth. I don't sell puppies, but I have over 20 years of animal industry experience and my interest is finding the dogs the right homes so it is a hard situation. It really upset me the other day when someone brought in a gorgeous little pom pup and then when I did my usual spiel he went outside and I saw him hand her over to someone on the road and they gave him the money and left. I spent the night very upset thinking about this poor pup and hoping that she went to a good home. -
Pet Shops Who Sell Rescue Dogs, Hmmm, Wtf?
casowner replied to Eileen's topic in General Dog Discussion
In my case I wanted to focus on older cats and older dogs (promoting them through posters and referring the interested parties back to the shelter). The older cats very rarely stand a chance in shelters during kitten season and it is heart breaking. I have stood in the euthanasia room killing cats and kittens all day due to irresponsible people and I believe if a program that could aid these animals could start then they would have the chance to live out their twilight years rather than being dumped in a bin in a freezer. I would have been happy to have the cats in the store and take them home at night, it would have been less stressful than sitting in a cold pen 24 hours a day. Seeing people have family outings to the shelter and purchasing a "pound puppy" because who could resist that sad looking dog sitting on concrete behind bars can be just as impulse as the fluffy puppy in the window at a pet shop. Not all shelters screen adoptive owners and many animals are sold to the completely wrong homes, some to return a few weeks or months later for various reasons. The thought of going to a shelter and thinking if he/she doesn't get a home it will die is a powerful emotive tug and people want to rescue them. Shelters advertising late night shopping/open day with a bbq on Christmas week while also promoting not buying pets for Christmas is also highly hypocritical and confuses the public. Unfortunately every where people turn they receive conflicting advice and it can cause confusion which is why I state we should work together. I don't think anyone should be able to buy on impulse no matter where it comes from, there should be a initial meet/greet followed by family educational session (without the animal present) and then a 24-48 hour cooling off period so that ALL parties can determine if the home is suitable. -
Pet Shops Who Sell Rescue Dogs, Hmmm, Wtf?

The QLD AWL is certainly a fine example, unfortunately the SA one has a lot to aspire to. The main shelters in SA tend to be stand alone and do not work with rescue or do not seem interested in cross education, it is a terrible shame. People need to get their own agendas put aside and work together for the good of the animals and public. -
Pet Shops Who Sell Rescue Dogs, Hmmm, Wtf?
casowner replied to Eileen's topic in General Dog Discussion
I recall putting forth an idea such as this a couple of years ago it was fairly well shut down because no one wanted to have an affiliation with any pet shop, nice to see that people are no longer as keen to tar all pet shops with the same brush I have offered my store for this aswell and have tried to work with the RSPCA for 5 years to no avail. Some pet shops do try to educate but can't do it on their own. -
I believe that RL spent $8000 of his own money to erect the fence, it maintains his dog, the pups leg went on his side so he can't be at fault. The owners of the pup are required to keep their dog in their yard, they should fix the gap - for their own piece of mind at least. That is what a caring, responsible owner would do anyway. We have stock, many neighbours don't, the boundary fences were bascially fallen down when we bought the property. Legally the neighbours are responsible for the cost of half the fencing we paid for it all as we want to keep our animals safe on our own property. If you have animals you need to contain them and make sure that they are safe, RL did that by erecting the fence in the first place

I think you should offer her as much helpful advice as possible without alienating her. Yes mistakes happen, I remember a topic on here a while a go asking what breeders would do in the case of an accidental litter. I believe there was a few (can't quite remember the percentage) that said they would let the bitch whelp, desex the pups and rehome them. I remember a breeder bring an "oops" litter of Alaskan Malamutes cross Curly Coated Retriever puppies to the AWL a few years ago, these were the single most gorgeous pups I have ever seen but a few came back due to temperament/aggression issues. Yes the breeder may want to know, but I would recommend trying to get your friend to contact them for advice themselves. As I like to say Educate, not Alienate.
