Maggots (up Date : Now Talking About Other Yucky Things)

Sorry but nothing beats baby camel exploding dia in the back of the van! Especially as it was hot and nothing separating you except the normal mesh = NOTHING. We had to drive for 1 1/2 hours with our head out the window swollowing our own dry reach -

Speaking of Maggots, a few weeks ago we took in some sheep that people just let roam all the time on the sides of the road because they couldn't be bothered fixing fences Anyway I was sick of nearly killing them all of the time, they were fly blown and gross. The thing with sheep is that we have had shorn ones that get flyblown, it is feral, shearing wool off and maggots flying at you - gross, gross, gross. This is why I prefer our wool shedders from the others we have. One of the worst I have seen is when a couple brought their old GSD in to be pts, his back legs had gone and he was covered in his own piss and the poor buggers back end was alive in maggots, the smell was horrendous. I made the owners come in to see how that dog had been suffering, their response "Oh well, he was a guard dog anyway and no use he if can't do anything". Disgusting, and nothing could be done as "Technically" they were doing something to alleviate pain, so not an offence - grrrr I was just thinking how many conversations start with the sentence "Speaking of Maggots" -

I have learnt this lately and it is great for people that don't enjoy scrubbing yucky wounds. First you do a thorough clean and then slather the whole wound and it seals it and heals. Having so many large animals at home and astronomical vet bills this has helped, camels can be prone to abscesses and my girl was in very poor condition when I got her she had big open wounds with maggots, I cleaned them out and smeared her with the honey and she healed beautifully. Which was great as I wasn't excited about handling a very angry sore camel that did not like me very much at that time. Many native tribes have used this a traditional medicine for generations. Quote "Scientists have determined that a certain type of honey called Manuka Honey is more capable of healing wounds and clearing infections than antibiotics and other forms of traditional medicine. As a result, Manuka Honey is now being used as a main ingredient in wound care products and other skin creams. All kinds of honey have the ability to kill bacteria and heal wounds because honey is very acidic. Honey also has a high sugar content and produces an antibacterial molecule called hydrogen peroxide, which can been used as a disinfectant. Manuka Honey is especially effective in treating infected wounds because it contains an additional antibacterial component known as UMF. Minor wounds can heal on their own but when a wound becomes infected, the healing process can become complex. Bacteria feed on the damaged tissue and multiply causing more tissue damage. The wound begins to develop pus and malodor. The pus consists of dead white blood cells which is the body's way of trying to kill the bacteria and heal the infection." -

Hot water? Oops posted at the same time chocolate -
Kimzy I too offer my heartfelt condolences, ashes are a very sensitive subject to me at the moment so I will be brief as now I am crying too. I would advise your vet about how you were treated and let them deal with the cremation service as I presume that it was organised through them. Cherish your memories of the last 19 years, do not let this incident cloud that no matter how hard it is. She deserves to be treated with as much respect in death as in life. celebrate the joy, love, companionship and loyalty that she gave you. She will live on in a place in your heart forever, give yourself peace as much as you gave hers.

Colour does cloud peoples judgement, last week I was all set to buy a dilute pinto filly and to be honest didn't even look at her conformation until other DOLers pointed it out. I was prepared to pay more for her plus $1000 transport just because of her colour. If people want something many times they are like me in that instance they don't look at what they are actually buying, I have a wonderfully put together stallion that I have waited over 10 years to breed with and I was going to get a badly conformed mare just because of colour The word colour blind does have meaning. I have seen the light and my rationality and responsibilty has been put firmly back in place.

They would not be registered, and run from anyone who says "English" Leanne I would have ran from the ad in any case due to the wording as I have learnt through DOL that they are SBT not English staffies, there was no where in the ad saying they were registered either, I was being a tad sarcastic about them, being so "cheap" with blue bloodlines

On average how many pups does a stafford have in a litter? For arguments sake say 6 @ $2500 at least 3 litters in 2 years = 18 pups @ $2500. Income for the 2 years = $45000.00 This is why they breed so many blue staffords I would say What does the breed benefit out of this = NOTHING, if they are not breeding correct dogs to start with. This is why I don't breed, it would break my heart to see my chosen breed go down this path Just found this ad on another website Purebred Staffy Pups with Blue bloodlines for Sale Price: $650 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Purebred English Staffy pups for sale The blue female is of course sold, I bet not for the $650

The fact still stands that it is a Hairdressing Salon, not a Vet Clinic, Pet Shop or Grooming Salon you do not expect to have a dog in there, not only for the obvious reasons but also for OH&S reasons. Diablo you still have not provided the link regarding SA and as someone in the Pet Industry in SA if that is actual legislation I would like to see it - to educate myself as I have been unable to find it. LED is the dog desexed?
-
I'm not sure what "entire" means, yes he is roughly 16months old male. I've visited him at the pound where he is kept, and the Pound carers comment on how placid and beautiful he is. They would know how to handle dogs from their own experiences. Entire means "undesexed"

If the kid fell onto the dog, he could have reacted out of pain/surprise. Why should he have a DD order on him if that was the situation? Under SA legislation, it would be clear cut case of provocation. It makes no difference if the child fell onto the dog or intentionally pulled it's tail, the dog was mistreated and reacted. The dog has the right to sit in peace without being hurt or startled by misadventure. Because the victim was a defenceless child, doesn't make the dog anymore at fault in the circumstances. Hi Diablo. I was wondering if you have that link as I am very interested in this "legislation" Cheers

I am from SA and I haven't heard that either, please post a link

Last night I had a fellow DOLer (whom I had never met personally before) come over with her partner late at night to see our Christmas lights. I had gotten my partner to put my CASD inside as he was not overally appreciative of all of the cars stopping in front of our property. I took my guests up to the front of the house to show them Jake, my OH opened the door and I held him by the collar, he proceeded to growl and hold the DOLer guest by the pants. The whole time he was calm, alert and very reading to move forward with protecting his property, he did not grab skin just held clothing I believe, now this incident has kept me up all night. The main reason is my first instinct once I removed his teeth from her pants was to smack him, something which I have NEVER done, he didn't flinch, he simply maintained eye contact with my guest. he was then put back inside. I am more disappointed in my reaction than the situation hence my lack of sleep. When my guests left I sat down and had a good review of what had happened, my faults and what the reasons were. My conclusions were very basic - Jake is a flock guardian, he has been bred to protect his home, it was late at night, my guests were wearing dark clothing, I was alone and there were two people, I was holding his collar not a lead, he does not like being inside when his territory is outside, my guests had their dogs in the car and he could scent them, he had been inside with my OH and young son and had already been in a high drive mood from earlier in the evening with other cars stopping. It all came down to he was protecting his territory, but there was no excuse or real threat as I saw it, he clearly thought differently. Jake is generally a very calm, stoic and social boy but I am always very aware that under this is his true self and after this I have absolute certainty that he would defend his territory from any threat. Once my guests left he scented the property where we had been and has set "camp" between the front gate and the gate to the kangaroo enclosure. This experience however brief has reintensified my belief that you can never become complacent (which I never am) with dogs and percieved threats that may occur. I was, and am severely embarassed by this incident, more so due to my smacking of him, and it was a smack, not a hit. The reason for this post is to show that owners of protective breeds need to be vigilant and responsible when they own them, these breeds are not a status symbol they require an enormous amount of training and understanding of their needs. I believe I am a very responsible custodian of my chosen breed and even small lapses such as last night can occur.

The other breeder that lost all of those pups after vaccination was MyDogsR4Life

It says C5 and F3 vaccinations are required on the cat page too. Looks like a great little place.

I remember being critisised not too long ago for not allowing my kids unsupervised with an 80kg Flock Guardian (or any dog for that matter), but then parents in these situations get a blasting for not supervising kids Again,I reiterate my point Never leave kids unsupervised with dogs To those who know the family of this little girl please pass on my heartfelt wishes to her.

Another reason why I don't go to the hairdresser and my hair is below my arse, it sounds like a dangerous place with "feral" children running around unsupervised, dogs eating their lunch on the floor, doggy and kid germs eeww If in another lifetime that I do venture into one of these places I will remember to keep my hands to myself and my eyes firmly focused on my hands. I am truly sorry for that poor child, her family and of course the dog, but really how was the dog under "effective control" if it's owner was focusing on cutting someones hair. And Souff

Jake had a hygroma we got it drained and it came back up, I put pressure bandages on - he ate them. The vet wanted to do surgery but I didn't want to on the elbow of a growing giant breed. His has gone done to where it is barely noticeable, it took months though. I agree soft bedding for him.

Oregano can be fresh or dried, if warmed it brings out the flavours. It is a popular herb in Italian Cooking and I don't know many fussy Italians Just ask my OH and his appetite for food -
