that must have scared you!! There is only one of mine that I have to pluck ears and I just do it nice and quick, it doesn't take long and he doesn't mind at all. I was quite suprised as I thought it would hurt but he doesn't bat an eye at all.

My lot all got used to the dryer from the minute they came to me. They came into the bathroom with me while I dryed my hair and when it came time for them to have thier first bath, they were fine with the dryer. It is amazing how many people are shocked when I say I do my own grooming as they can't even get a brush through thier dogs as they say the dog hates it?? I feel for groomers that have to deal with long coated breeds that are not used to being brushed and dryed it must be a nightmare!! I figure I must be doing something right as my youngest lays down and goes to sleep while Im clipping him one always wants to go first when she sees the brush or the clippers and the older two are quite happy to stand and be clipped and scissored. It is great to be able to groom dogs that are willing participants.

So how does it work when you upgrade from PS CS4 to CS5 will it be expensive and will it be something we can just download? or will we actually have to go and buy the full program? I hardly ever use PS now that I am using LR, I only do basic stuff so LR is all I need for now. One of the main reasons I don't use PS so much is there is so many things and I can't be bothered learning. I did a basic PS course but it was just that basic!!

Arrrggghhh, no no NO!!! The amount of matted poodle x breed-of-the-week I've had come in for their wonderful first groom at 6 months is frightening. A coat that isn't brushed is a coat that will mat (unless you're very lucky). I have oodles coming to me for their first clip as little as 12 weeks old. Even if you scissor the chunky bits off yourself, muffinmclay, you'll be doing yourself a world of favours if you have the coat at a manageable length. How old is the dog? If I were you, I would find a local groomer and go in and ask them for advice as to brushing. It's a lot easier to see it done for yourself, especially if you've never had a dog before. They can recommend you a decent brand of brush, too, and show you how to clip toenails etc. Maybe call in advance to go see them at a time where they're not so busy they'll have a stress attack in your general direction, tho. Hehe. Maybe even ask them to save a bit of matted/knotty coat from another dog to show you, so you know what a mat feels like. I didn't mean or say you don't have to brush them, what I mean was that it is around that time that the matts/knots usually appear while the adult coat is coming through and from then on if regular care of the coat is not maintained. Good advice about heading to a groomers. I guess it really depends how long you want to keep the coat and how much upkeep you want to do. I keep my lot reasonable short (more so in summer) as we are out and about a lot, swimming, parks and lots of off lead runs etc, so shorter coats are easier to maintain.

Bonnys right, get rid of the slicker, it will only be touching the surface a pin brush is the best. How old is your dog has he been groomed/clipped at all yet? Dont worry about him not looking like he is not brushed they do tend to have a shaggy type look to them so no matter how much you brush he will probly always look the same. Areas to concerntrate on with brushing, under ears, under arms, between toes. Im not 100% sure but if Lab x poos are like Cocker x poos, If he is under 12 months old he probly still only had his puppy coat which will change and thats when you need to start worrying about matting. Do you find him loosing any hair either dropping hair or in the brush?

Hey Bec, do you have a Bunnings close by?? One of the ones I have is a Bunnings one and it has survived 4 dogs! So the quality is quite good. I popped that stuff in the mail this morning, I hope it survives the trip, the lid is not the right lid so it is taped and glad wrapped.

HAHA dont tempt me!! i would love a lil pup...but i have to think of the kids, well the dog really.. I want them to enjoy each others company Im not quite sure why you think they wouldn't enjoy each others company, kids love fun puppies love having fun. as long as you make a safe place (crate or similar) for the pup to be able to retreat to once he/she needs some quiet time or a sleep, then there should be no worries at all. Also as lizt said puppies are not puppies for long. Although there would be more work involved with a pup, toilet training obedience training etc. My boy put up with the noisiest, naughtiest of kids and he survived, he got used to it from a young age.

I don't think it is that in some cases some dogs just dont get along with other pets. It is that dogs are prey animals and it is thier instinct to seek out prey and chase kill etc..... The other thing about better locks on the hutches will only stop the dog getting at the smaller animals it wont stop the dog from going around the outside of the cage and this in itslef can be distressing to rabbits guinea pigs etc.... Only with some intensive training this may be rectified but even then maybe not. One of my girls every time we go to SIL place she heads right for the rabbit hutch and rounds the cage, she has to be left on lead when we go there cause everything we have tried with her nothing works!!

All good common sense adivce so far, is there any way you can talk your mate into taking the dog to an obedience school, perhaps a bit more structure and training for the dog and take it's attention elsewhere might be benificial. The kids could be involved in the training as well.

I say go the whole hog and get a puppy, Pups are resiliant and you and the kids would have a lot of fun teaching him/her. Perfect if you are a stay at home mum, lots of time for kids and pup. When I got Cooper now nearly 4, he was 8 weeks old, at the time I had my own child care business and I had kids of all ages under 4 coming and going all the time, Cooper loved it always someone new to play with, I never ever had a problem with him at all, he was so sad when I finished up to take a different job. I dont have kids of my own and even now if we go somewhere there are kids or if we have kids visit, he gets that glint in his eye and his tail starts going madly he just loves kids and I think it is because of his early interaction with them!! Anyway good luck I hope you find what your looking for!!

thanks. Imagine my suprise when my 10 week old puppy decided to bite me because I went to take his treat off him Boy did I get a shock, and so did he, the following few weeks after was a school of hard knocks for him, every meal or treat he had I was in his face taking, giving, taking, giving, till he got it!! It didn't take long for him to get it. I give it I can take it no ifs ands or buts ;)

Thats exactly what I mean about unpredictable, but generally speaking there is a reason for thier behaviour, like your story there was a reason. glad it didn't effect you in the long run!!
