I think even a dog you have owned from a pup and had for a long time still has the ability to bite, there are so many variables. If a robber broke into your house when you weren't home but your dog was inside, would the dog bite?? If your dog was unwell and children were trying to get the dog to play would the dog bite?? If a stranger tried to attack you in the park would your dog try to protect you and bite?? who knows all different scenarios, dogs are unpredictable to a degree, we don't know what they are thinking and what they would be capable of in different scenarios.

It is sad for some breed of dogs that really because of public perception these particular breeds get a bad rap!! A lot of the time to people listen to other people and take what they say as gospel, Everybody at work knows how crazy I am abou tdogs so anyone one with a doggy story will come to me and the things that come out of some peoples mouth, honestly sometimes I am just gobsmacked that people can be so niave (sp) about some things pertaining to dogs. It does however seem to be that particular breeds get a bad rap, staffords, gsd's, pitbulls, big black dogs in general. I always say to people that the owners are mostly to blame when something happens with one of these dogs. A perfect example was a month or so ago, one of my work mates her cat was in thier yard asleep in the garden when a neighbours staffy x escaped its yard and while running around the court spotted the cat (she was an easy target a birmese so easy for the dog to see) and proceeded to run into the yard pounced on the cat who didnt have a chance and tore her to bits all the while one of the cats owners was in the yard at the time and called for his wife (my friend) and they both did everything they could to try to get the dog to let go of the cat, hit and punched the dog kicked the dog tried everything but the dog just would not let go. You can imagne how upset they were, to witness this and try to stop it and not be able to, just shocking. Is it the dogs fault, it is a natural instinct for the dog to do it, it is up to the dogs owner to make sure the dog is secured to make sure this type of thing can not happen. The cat owners wanted the dog pts but the council declared the dog dangerous and had to be muzzled in public and contained in a secure enclosure at home, but these people are still walking the dog around the neighbourhood like nothing ever happend, no muzzle and now they are applying for the dangerous dog thing to be removed because they are pleading the dog has never ever done anything like this before. Will they be smart enough to keep the dog contained who knows. I know accidents can happen and sometimes things are out of your control but people just need to realize that dogs are dogs and they can be unpredicatble. Jata, your story gave me goose bumps as kids we were taught to never ever put our face near a dog as you just never know if the dog is going to like you doing that, even to this day I shiver when I see people do it. I do it with my own dogs cause I know them but I dont like other people to do it to them because you just never know, I do trust that they would never do anything but what if one day one of them is feeling off color or something and they just turn. Geez I think I may have gotten a bit of topic, what was the subject again

I have been bitten by a dog and now everytime I see this type of dog I get a funny feeling, but it is weird my friend has one but a different color and I don't get the funny feeling with her, only ones the same color as the one I got bitten from.

My mum cannot stand GSD's, when she was young about 9 she walked past an army barracks and a GSD was in the yard, there was a bone near the fence.....as she walked past, the dog flew over the fence and attacked her biting her up her arm and luckily there was a young army man who came to the rescue and saved her, if he hadn't of been there she may not be here today to tell the story and ever since she has been absolutly petrified of GSD's. There have been a few intances since where she has seen GSD's do things not so nice that has really cemented her dislike of them.

Can you give an example of what you mean??

Wow, Asha has really got some serious air!! Great shots, like I said they looked good on the iphone but so much better on the pc!! What lense did you use for these? and are you using the ball thrower for the ball. I love taking action shots and it is hard if your on your own to get the camera ready and throw the ball focus and shoot all at once.

Totally awesome shots Bec, can't wait to see them on the pc as I'm only on the iPhone but they still look great!!!

What To Do About Chewing/eating Her Bed
tlc replied to becandcharch's topic in General Dog Discussion
I reckon Mokhahouse has the right idea, if you do decide to get the tramp beds, use the spray and watch her like a hawk for any hint of a chew and quicky correct if she does. You could start off on a weekend when you dont have to work....(presuming you dont have to work on weekends) :D i know I shouldn't presume, just wishful thinking on my part as I do have to work on weekends -

Yes yes, I know exactly what you mean, I was suprised to read on the label that it can be sprayed on the dogs paws if they are a paw chewer....gross. But Bec Im happy to post it off if you wanna check it out, Im never gonna need it. The tramp beds are probly a great idea, one of mine started to chew the edge of thiers but it didnt go any further than that. If you got a big one they would probly both get on together, I have two and four of mine sleep on two. -

Pers. after tasting the bitter spray I tend to agree, the spray or the aerogaurd would be very nasty tasting to a dogs taste buds! I was shocked at how disgusting the spray is!! Bec does Asha chew up stuff while your home?? Could it be a separation anxiety thing? Just a thought. Two of mine when they were younger only chewed stuff when I wasn't home, could have been that they were bored even though they had had plenty of excersise before I went out. Or anxious that I was gone?? -
Ah great thanks so much, I had tried that but I tried 2 codes obviously the wrong ones!!

Hey Bec, very time consuming posting on the iphone!! I have a bottle of Petz plus Bitter bite here that I never even used, if you want it flick me a pm with your address and Ill pop it in the post on Monday. It is actually nearly out of date but not quite!! Not sure if it will work and it might not be strong enough because it says it can be used on puppies, anyway if you want it let me know!! I cant even remember why I bought it?? edited to add I just sprayed a bit out of the bottle and put a bit on my tounge it is so gross so it just might work?? -

Hi Bec, I have never tried this before although I wish I had of known about it when 2 of mine were pups, but a friend said to use aerogaurd, it is supposed to be really good and the taste is meant to put them off the chewing. I dont know how safe it is but I guess we put it on our skin so it cant be all bad. Although Im not sure how you would go if you have to spray blankets with it as I think it would just absorb in?? anyway just an idea. -
Well done!! What did she win??

I think what the vet was getting at was the fact that the bone only acts as an apple would to our teeth and just generally brush over the surface and not give them a good scrub like a tooth brush would?? But I do disagree with this as I think if the dogs are having the right bones then they should be doing a sufficient enough job to clean the teeth perfectly. I think in my case maybe my lot are not getting enough bones. I keep thinking back to our old dog whose teeth were near to perfect for 16 years he knawed on his bone every day for ages, so it worked for him!! edited to add, I guess in my case with my lot if I don't give them more bones to clean thier teeth better than they are now, then it is like them eating an apple cause it is not doing the proper job.

Nice shots Annie, especially love the second one. I too thought the little black and tan looked a lot like Ralph!! CM, love the last shot of Chester looking out of the box!

Can someone help me with a flickr thing? When you post a picture in the box underneith for leaving a comment, how do I get a picture in there? Do I just copy and paste a link to the picture or is there another way? Hoping someone knows I just can't figure it out. Thanks

Are you talking generally, Bindii, or specifically to the OP about the OP's dog? I mean in general. I mean, it's fine if people want to brush their dogs teeth. I just think it's a bit OTT for a vet to say that's what someone MUST do - because bones do the job just fine. IF you have concerns about blockages etc then go ahead and brush, but no one should pretend it's the only option. To say that chewing a bone is like us eating an apple is rubbish. That was my initial reaction too! I was thinking last night while watching my youngest knawing away on a nyla bone and it hit me that possibly why his and Tully teeth are slightly better than the older two and when I say slightly it is only just. That maybe the nyla bones help with cleaning as well as them two are the only ones that do a lot of chewing on them and other chew toys whereas the older two don't bother??
