  1. Yeah I've been wondering if even negative feedback it still attention in his mind. Negative attention is attention. Ignore the unwanted behaviour. See if it changes or extinguishes.
  2. The clicker is a bridge which marks the correct behaviour and also means, to the dog, that a treat is (for now in this early stage of training) coming. You don't need speed when giving the treat. This will become more apparent when you fade out the lure. Alpha bet gives good advice for stopping snatching.
  3. My greyhound girl is quite small. She weighs 25kg and often I have people asking if she is cross whippet. She is an absolute dream of a dog - an ex racer I adopted from Hawkesbury Pound. The term you are looking for is dolichocephalic.
  4. Yes, now thank goodness as she was on main papers, think she has had at least one small litter as teats are slightly pronounced she is only now 23months Might only mean she experienced a season.
  5. Why do they want a dog!? Sounds like they will not have much to do with it.
  6. Yards are lovely. Nice big yards with grass, shelter and bedding. But that doesn't actually provide any enrichment. I know of dogs that are "kennel mad" even though they are kept in grassed yards.
  7. Aggression is not easy to sum up on a forum. There are courses you can take to learn more about aggression. There is a fantastic DVD I watched on aggression called "The Bite-O-Meter" 3rd product down.
  8. Training, training, training. Start from the minute the dog comes home and keep consistent. If the dog is sure of its boundaries and rules from day one, why would there become a problem in later years unless the owners were not consistent? So many people get a puppy and let it do naughty things "because its so cute" and then when its an adult and monster its a lot harder to undo it all.
  9. Soak it in warm water beforehand. Works for the fussy dogs on special diets we have at work.
  10. Not really.. we are all basically telling you to keep mixing the mince with the kibble.
  11. we should have a sticky thread reminding Trish to empty her PM box
  12. I think a heart dog can also depend on the path you have taken with them. My heart dog Sweep has been through all the ups and downs with me over the past 7 years (and me with his!) and maybe, just because I have had him the longest, brings about that special bond also. I love all of my other dogs very much and have a strong bond with them... but there is something extra about Sweep.
  13. That's a no from me too. The dynamics of a dog pack may be drastically changed by you bringing your own dog along. Never mind the fact that their actual owners are not around which can elevate stress in a lot of dogs. Coupled with you being a complete stranger, as while you might think your dog is okay, I have had that said to me before and their dogs have turned out to NOT be ok. Sorry but when it comes to protecting my dogs, I am going to be over cautious.
  14. ^^ This. An injury on the head is possibly not as serious muscularly as a torso injury could be.
  15. Ditch the Frontline. Get a second vet opinion.
  16. When a car drove through our neighbours stock fencing at 12pm on a rainy night my OH and I ran out to promptly fix it in case their stock got out. We couldn't get a response from knocking on their door. We used our own fencing supplies. I'd rather fix the fence then risk a dead animal or injury to driver.
  17. Is the "old lady" capable or in a financial position to repair/replace her fencing? Stuff the letter, I would be repairing the fencing myself. I would feel guilty if I came home and saw her dog squished on the road and know I did nothing to really help.
  18. My essay is due tomorrow Just wanted to check with the wide world of DOL intelligence that I have not forgotten something: Write a short essay (max 500 words) explaining why it is important to fade out the lure when using food to lure a behaviour when training a dog. While using the food to train, it should only be used as a reward, not a bribe to get the dog to perform the desired behaviour. There is no reason to show the dog the reward or even motion towards your treat pouch without first having done the desired behaviour if you have taught the cue reliably. Doing this will teach the dog that it either: does not have to perform the cue if it does not think a treat is coming or you may accidently teach your dog a cue, such as the opening your treat pouch or reaching for the treat (which is possibly not the cue you have intended) for the desired behaviour. To be considered reliable, the dog must respond to your cue (usually a voice command or specific hand signal) at least 80 percent of the time without additional lures or prompts. For example, you want your dog to learn that “drop” means to lay down. You will want to be able to do this in future without you having to offer food, bend over and point to the floor or move a treat down past his nose. Once you have successfully added the cue and the dog has the desired behaviour happening just by saying your verbal command, fade out the food reward by only offering it every few random times. Food rewards must be faded out gradually or else the dog may lose interest quickly. Try not to create a pattern as some dogs are smart enough to recognise this! If the lure is not faded during training programs, the dog can become dependent on the presence of the lure (for example the food) to perform the desired behaviour and will only comply when they know a food treat is coming. This is not helpful if you are not always carrying treats! Food rewards are also not always acceptable in some training or obedience classes.
  19. I understand what you are saying about pack dogs. You mean packs as in hunting packs such as beagle or foxhounds who go on hunts with their owners. Or huskys and malamutes that pull a sled together. I don't have any knowledge on same sex aggression under these circumstances. You could try contacting hunting or sledding clubs. ETA: You could get some idea by looking at the breed history and what it was bred for - they might mention something about preferred sex.
  20. If the roof of a dogs mouth is black or has black markings means he/she is stupid.
  21. The only reason I would PTS is if the dog was not going to have quality of life after the treatment. Otherwise I would exhaust all options first. (and no I don't have a high income, I am currently a student.)
