I'm assuming as far as drugs you only mean over the counter type drugs dont you? When I rode on the National Trail my vet let me have some serious horsey ones but only after we'd discussed it carefully, when they might be needed, and he'd written dosages etc. I'm not sure what drugs I'd put in a dog first aid kit, this will be interesting to see, yes, polaramine would be one though, I've used it on my dogs a number of times. Also lectric soda crystals, bought in the laundry aisle of the supermarket, good for making your dog puke. a finger nail sized crystal down their throat should hopefully make them sick up within about 5 minutes.

I think it still sounds like it's probably right. He might have been getting some wear and degeneration that wasn't so noticable as it's been happening gradually, but now he's aggravated it. Of course it could be something else, but it still seems like a plausible explanation to me. But you do what your gut instinct tells you to.
-
that sounds very sudden, he must have aggravated a joint that's wearing perhaps. Hopefully with some meds and rest it will settle down. Is he over weight? Keeping him lean might help too.

If it's that sore for him to be crying all night, and trembling now, I think if it was my dog I'd be taking him to the vet. Dogs dont put it on IMO.

Seizures, I Dont Really Understand :(
Kirislin replied to Kirislin's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
WOW!!!! thankyou so much, yes this explains it to me very well, and I think is probably what my lovely vet was trying to tell my addled brain yesterday because several things I read that you wrote clicked with me and I thought Oh yes, he said that. It also makes me feel alot better about it. thankyou so much. I suppose the only thing I'm wondering about at the moment is that although it seems that Tags seizures might be considered mild, because I know he is conscious throughout them, he goes very rigid, but he knows I'm there, they go for a long time. I think Mondays was probably about 20 minutes from start to finish, meaning from the time I saw him go all leg splayed, to the time he felt like standing up again. The vet was surprised when I told him how long they went for. and thankyou to everyone else for your concern and good wishes for my Tag. -

Seizures, I Dont Really Understand :(

Thanks, that sounds encouraging. I've heard bad things about medicating them, like it spaces them out but it sounds like your dog is doing well on it. :) I dont know if we'll need to do it with Tag, I suppose it depends on the next few weeks. -
Seizures, I Dont Really Understand :(

Everytime Tag has one it brings back the dreadful memories of my horse Rowdy. On his last day alive I came home to see him collapse and thrash around smashing his head on the ground. I could hear the bones breaking in his skull. It's got to be up there as one of the worst days of my life. I still miss him. -

You wouldn't know anything had happened to him, he's just polished off some lamb bones. -
Seizures, I Dont Really Understand :(
Kirislin replied to Kirislin's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The one he had today was alot milder than Mondays. I laid him on the floor on Monday and just sat with my hand on his chest. I could feel his heart racing that day, but today it seemed normal, even as he was in seizure, and he wasn't as rigid today, just wobbly. They took his temp and it was normal too. When I described them to the vet he said it sounds like petit mal, but was surprised at their duration. I think Mondays probably lasted about 20mins all up, and todays went for at least 10 minutes. He said that is a long time. -

He's not on medication as yet, they've been too far apart until now. The vet said it might just be a cluster and they'll taper off again, I hope so. He'll go everywhere with me for the next little while. I'll be watching him with an eagle eye. -
Tag the whippet started having seizures at about 5 years old, he's just turned 8 last month. I took him to the vet after his first one and was told to keep a record of them and if they're frequent then it's worth considering medication. They've been well spaced apart, sometimes it's more than a year between them. I think they're probably considered mild by most standards too, he never loses consciousness, just gets all wobbly and rigid, (and frightened I think). I'm worried now though because he had one last month, then one this Monday and again today. I've just come back from the vet, I managed to get him there while he was still going through the tail end of it so they could see him. The vet's taken bloods although I dont really understand what they're looking for. He's told me to watch him closely because if he has another one within 24 hours it's an emergency. I've come away a bit confused, not the vets fault, they're wonderful, my own for either not asking enough questions or just not really retaining the information they've told me. So where better to ask than DOL. Why is it an emergency if he has another one so soon?

sorry to hear the news is bad. I'd never heard of Bullous disease so that's what caught my eye initially. Try to enjoy the time you have left with him.

Cleanrun.com Has Free Shipping On Lots Of Toys...
Kirislin replied to megan_'s topic in General Dog Discussion
 I still have some of the toys you were kind enough to get for me. I used some as prizes for the racing club, and let my guys have a few but I cant quite bring myself to hand over the rest to them, because I know what will happen, I'll find their torn broken mangled little bodies strewn around the yard -
I had a young one come into the back yard a couple of years ago, it was eaten before it even knew it was dead!
-
they'd probably be really tender then if they're young.
-
That too!
-
I'd be worming him and cutting down what you feed him, 'cause he's getting self serve.

It's just an open parkland area. They dont get a very long run, maybe only about 120mts, but they have lots of turns. You're welcome to come over again if you feel like a drive. We're having our last fun day of the year Saturday November 17th

Poor little puppy! The only good thing he did was surrender it. When will it be going on Iggy Rescue? I just went looking for a squizz but it's not up yet.

Could be fixed with something as simple as giving calcium between whelping each pup and then for a couple of days after.. She is a really dog aggressive dog, who has to be muzzled at home so she doesn't attack the male dog this idiot has... He saw me with Ziggy and asked about using him and then told me how silly I was desexing him because there is lots of money to be made for good dogs.. You simply can't tell these people anything as they already know it all... I will suggest it if I ever have the misfortune of running into him again, thanks Pav... I honestly think there are just to many people (who have no idea and are only doing it to make money) breeding dogs... Dogs of any temperament or breeding... People who really have no idea what they are doing and rely totally on the fact that nature will take care of itself.. Lucky for so many, nature does take its course and the bitches whelp relatively fuss free... To make things clear, I don't include good breeders in this category of 'people'.. We need good breeders to produce good dogs.. In a way, it might be better if you dont suggest it. Otherwise he'll start churning out puppies. Maybe this way he'll eventually give up.

Cavies are used alot by puppy farmers to cross breed with, could it be that they're getting rid of "stock" if there's been a downturn in sales from pet shops closing down?
