Meeting A Breeder - Are There Certain Customs Involved?
Kirislin replied to Ruin Maniac's topic in General Dog Discussion
Take a camera so you can get pics of the parents. They're just people everyone is different, hopefully you will click with them. Just be polite but be yourself. Have a good time. edit I see it's already happened, I should've read the whole thread. Glad it's gone well. -
I found those videos distressing to watch, that poor little dog and you for having to try to deal with it. I know she hasn't got teeth but what about if you offered her a very meaty knuckly bone or something similarly tasty to suck and lick, would it take her mind off it a bit. I suppose it's just transferring the behaviour, but at least she's not injuring herself. Can she go for walks, would tiring her out help as well?

Bison The Rottweiler And His Lymphoma Battle
Kirislin replied to DerRottweiler's topic in Palliative Care Forum
I'm sorry, it's been a long time for you to be knowing what was coming, he must have been a very stoic boy. RIP big fella. My condolences to you and those who loved Bison. -
I think you're mean selling their crate, how can they make it any clearer, they still want it.

the photo's either too small or too big, but I got the general idea. It's like a little kid when you want to give their toys they no longer play with to the op shop. All of a sudden they're like, but I still play with that.

wow! fantastic photos, it really looks beautiful there. He's an ambitious little dog isn't he, attacking that huge ball  -
I've heard about not feeding raw egg whites to dogs, but I wonder how many you'd have to feed for it to become a problem. I would've imagined they'd have to eat alot. I give my dogs a raw egg each occasionally as a treat. They love them.

this is something I do struggle with, and I tend to try not to think about it, but it is a source of guilt for me. I've been to slaughter yards and sale yards. I've seen frightened injured animals put up for sale and know where they're headed. Who knows, maybe this thread will be the turning point for me. I saw online yesterday a chook workshop coming up, it covers poultry care and also killing and dressing the fowl for the table.

that's interesting. What about captive animals in zoos? Carnivores like wolves, and seals etc. Do you think they should be fed only vegetables?

If we're not supposed to eat meat then why does it taste so damn good?

You seem like a very normal vegan, I met one once and she once a few sandwiches short of a picnic that's for sure. You try getting hospital food right for a vegan, a strict very picky one at that. Holy baloney! did you feel like just saying to her, "do you want to eat or not?"

I know, how good would that be, no trucks, no sales yards, no confusion, no rough handling, no scary transport to abbattiors, just a quick death for them. Oh how I wish I could, they'd have a great life and be treated with respect and gratitude.

I wish I had the courage? to kill my own meat for myself and my dogs. I could raise chickens and sheep and goats and bunnies for food, kill them quickly and humanely so that they'd be happily eating their favourite food one second and be dead the next. But I just cant do it.

I know a whippet who eats wasps in much the same way as my Kibah eats huntsmans. She nips and tosses them until they're disabled then eats them.

I'm not sure about cats, but dogs are fed a diet of Whey protein powder, high protein vegetables and supplements. Do a search on here and you will see. Or perhaps, if you are genuinely interested, you could PM some of the people on here who own/have owned dogs who can't tolerate meat protein. And, if you really want, I could ask my Naturopath (who has over 40 years' experience with people and animals) the question you have about vegetable sources of protein. She specialises in allergies and anti-aging, and she has a particular interest in high protein/low carb diets. She is one Australia's leading Naturopaths. But I don't want to waste her time if you are just arguing for the sake of it. I think there are quite a few Holistic Vets on here, too. Also, Nekhbet might be an interesting person to talk to. Just because you have never heard of something, it doesn't mean it's impossible, untrue or doesn't exist :) Whey is animal protein

to tell the truth, I think they were eating duck poo

If dogs wanted to be vegan then I suppose the problem we would be having with wild dogs and domestic roaming dogs wouldn't be that they kill the farmers sheep, but rather they were competing with the sheep for the grass. IMG_9392dpptc by kirislin, on Flickr

Can you post a photo of Tonkas teeth showing the long canines and the back molars. You might need to take 2 photos. My 2 boys and their mum, who is 13.5 yo all have excellent teeth. Feather and Kibahs are pretty good compared to most other dogs I think, but they do have a bit of tartar and I've recently started feeding them plaque off. Too soon to know if it's going to help but I have photos before I started feeding it and I'll take some more in a few weeks time so it should clearly show if there's been an improvement. I had to take Tag to the vet the other day for something unrelated and he commented on Tags teeth saying they look like he's just had a dental. He never has, his teeth are kept clean purely by his diet. 8 y/o teeth by kirislin, on Flickr 8 year olds teeth by kirislin, on Flickr

I suggest if they want a pet that doesn't eat meat get a bunny, guinea pig, horse, sheep, cow, goat, camel or deer. That's all that comes to mind right now. I suppose they could also go into wildlife rescue and take on macropods, wombats and koalas.

so many pretty photos in here!

good luck with your exams, and then we can pester you with veterinary questions. -
If you're going to spray or do anything to disturb the nest wait until dark or close to it.

My favourite colour poodle. I've only bred 2 litters but with my 2nd one, Penny started leaving the puppies after about the 3rd night to sleep with me. I had a heated whelping box so I let her choose what she wanted to do. She'd go back in often to feed them but didn't want to stay with them. I figured she'd know what was right for them better than I do so I let her do as she pleased. The pups were all fat and well fed.
