  1. Poor little dog, he must have seen what happened to his owner, sounds like it's upset him. I agree with others, just be gentle, try not to fuss. When you looked after him before did you take him for walks as well. That might help in the morning to get him out on the lead having a good sniff about. I hope his owner recovers.
  2. Their birthdays remind me again of how much I love them, although I dont really need to be reminded, but 3 of them here I bred, so I do reflect on their actual birthday. I also send emails to all the others in the litter now living with their owners, and wish them a Happy Birthday. I've been thinking alot lately about them aging because all of mine are now considered mature, even the boys who will be 8 in a few days. I used to think loosing a pet would get easier as I got older but in fact it's getting harder for me. Loosing them young and unexpectedly is especially difficult, I understand Sir WJs grief. I am more accepting of the ones who died when they were old, than I am of Magic who was killed when she was young. That was in 1987 and I still feel the pain of it.
  3. Probably what it was, thanks Annie, the neighbour isn't known for her accuracy.
  4. a friends neighbour said she heard on the radio this morning that there's something happening with whippets today at Lilydale. Very vague I know but I'm wondering if anyone knows what it might be. Personally I think my friends neighbour is a bit odd anyway so there's a good chance it's all wrong.
  5. so was it a cat or a kitten I wonder. Kitten sounds cuter. I hope it finds a home anyway.
  6. The briefs are out!! https://www.canon.com.au/en-au/worldofeos/photo5/Briefs
  7. I wonder if Hallmark would be interested in using this for their Mothers Day card range  spider mum and babies by kirislin, on Flickr
  8. Tag seems fine now. He's had about 6 fits that I know of in his life. They seem to be few and far between thankfully. Can you explain compression? Is it what makes the subject isolate from the background?
  9. this is Tag, he had a fit early this morning so I thought I'd better take some photos of him. He seems fine today. 10. there's some lovely photos in here, I'm awake because Tag has just had a fit, so of course I thought I'd check out DOL. I like the raindrops MnDM. I know what you mean about that lens giving you motion sickness with the IS is turned on, it did that to me too. Tlc, I've got the old version 100mm Canon macro. I love that lens, it's very sharp, I dont really use it for macro much but I use it alot when I go to the beach with the whippet fun days. I've taken alot of good action shots with it. You'll love it on the 7D
  11. they had the runs, became very dehydrated, then lost the desire or ability to suck, so nearly starved to death. If it wasn't for a dedicated friend who continued to inject them with fluids overnight they would have just quietly faded away and died. I took them to the vet many times, the vet even took them home herself one night and fed them to keep them alive, they'd gain their strength a bit with feeding then poo it all out and become weak again. It was only once they tested the poo they realised what it was. It was treated with a type of antibiotic but I cant remember the name. I had to treat all my dogs, even the adults. Two of those puppies who nearly died are my own Tag and Puck. Tag is actually named after my friend who kept him alive, it's her initials. They grew into big healthy whippets. I would definitely be asking your vet to test for giardia. Another one they thought it could be at the time was rotavirus.
  12. It could be Giardia. When Penny had her puppies they contracted it from her milk. Even though she appeared healthy and the pups were all born healthy as soon as they started to suckle they became infected. It has about a 7-8day incubation period. It took a few days for the vet to diagnose, it was only after a poo sample did they realise, and by then the pups were almost dead. All survived though, it was easily treatable once they knew what it was.
  13. kja and tlc, I really like both lots of yours. tlc, is that a wide angle lens you're using? Looks like you're really getting a handle on the 7D too Duh! of course it's a wide angle I forgot you have the 17-70. You've used it to great effect, I really like the way the line of seats leads my eye.
  14. Thanks kja and Pers. I dont go to the market much 'cause it's absolute madness in town on a Sunday anyway, all the tourists, but market day is even worse. I might have to get braver though and try it more, I was shy about taking photos, I missed some great opportunities, if only I'd had a bit more "pluck" the carpet seller wanted to buy my camera!
  15. Hope these qualify, I went to the market today. I thought this bloke was handsome, pretty sure he's from Afghanistan, he liked having his photo taken, very relaxed about it. 5F6A1685dppt by kirislin, on Flickr a flower stall 5F6A1681dpp by kirislin, on Flickr 5F6A1683dppt by kirislin, on Flickr not often seen in my little town 5F6A1680dppt by kirislin, on Flickr
  16. Very cute, I hope it didn't hurt either of you.
  17. I had no idea of Baileys ordeal this last week or so! I read the first post and then didn't visit again till today. I'm glad the poor little fella is on the mend.
  18. that's taking it to the literal extreme, she has light on her back. It's beautiful though and still fits here. She looks like a whippet border collie cross, do you know what she is? I love sleepy Saxon CM. Really nice to see you posting here again too. If you ever want to come to another whippet fun day we've moved but we're still having them. We're on open grass land now so you can get side ons without rails or fences.
  19. I would hate to have any of my animals deliberately harmed or killed. In my eyes it would be murder, just the same as if it was a human, but the law doesn't see it that way. Many years ago my sister had a pet ram that was tortured to death. I dont know if they even caught the culprits, I think they did but they weren't punished much if at all. I dont know what I would do, I hope I'm never in a position to find out.
  20. Wow - $950 for an unpapered pup. I can think of ANKC breeders who sell pups for less than that. Agree with the other posters. Few if any inheritable health problems occur in Whippets. You hear occasionally of epilepsy (which has no health test) and there have been a few incidences of heart issues (confined to one line that I'm aware of). There are a few breeders that check hearts but that's about it. Of course, if you don't know the pedigree behind the pup, then knowing the lines behind it and the potential issues becomes completely impossible. They are generally more healthy than many breeds but there are problems popping up, perhaps more than you realise. I think to say only one line of whippets in Australia have heart issues is wrong too, how can you define that one line when dogs are being sold and bred all over the country. I know Sarsanet bought a beautiful young pup only to wake up and find it dead on her bed from a heart problem.Undescended testes is another problem that many breeders either shrug off or in the case of a very well known breeder here in Vic, deny. I have only bred 2 litters and the last one was 8 years ago, before health testing was considered in whippets. In the first litter I had one with a puppy heart murmur which was gone by 3months. All of that litter are still alive 10 years later. The second litter, one died from some kind of immune disease, one has a deformed leg, although it's never been confirmed if it was a birth defect, one has epilepsy (although not severe), one has mitral valve disease and also had an undescended testicle. Oh, and one has a very dodgy temperament, but I'm not sure, might be something the owner may have caused. Needless to say all are now desexed. I know this has developed into a thread about whippets but as it's titled sighthounds I believe Pannus is in Greyhounds.
  21. that tiger looks like it's thinking Uh Oh, I think I left the stove on.
