You've done a great thing.
-
Just finished putting photos up and you'll see there's a couple on non whippets, a little JRT (I think) and a Bedlington terrier having its first introduction to the lure, and I suspect its first ever sniff of a fox.

Haven't the chimps got amazing faces. Charles reminds me of Jason Robards, not a criticism of either, I love Jason Robards.

what beautiful markings. Mr Stompy

Can I Ask For Some Prayers For My Furbaby?
Kirislin replied to esky's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have a special soft spot for Pekes as I had one as a kid, dear little dogs. I hope your sweet girl will be OK, you must be so worried. -
She works at an animal shelter though. They need to know the laws for greyhounds.
-
It bothers me that she's giving out the wrong information. It doesn't matter in this dogs case because it is clearly a cross bred, even though she doesn't know it. But if she's going 'round saying show bred greys dont have to be assessed through GAP she needs "re-educating"
-
this is what I would have thought too. Otherwise how could you prove it wasn't a race bred dog. Yes the show bred dogs I've seen are usually larger and deeper chested and the dog yesterday was smaller than race greys. I know some can be small but they'd be fine, this was more like a pig dog, although not quite as chunky. I could easily see there was greyhound in it but definitely not pure.

I was at an animal shelter yesterday and the attendant said the dog in the cage was a greyhound. When I saw the dog I said that's not a purebred greyhound. It was approx 23" at the shoulder, very stocky with short chunky legs and a short thick tail. It certainly looked like it had some greyhound in it but there were other breeds in there too, possibly some bull terrier and something else to give it a slightly longer coat and that very thick tail, about the length of a labrador tail I'd guess. She insisted it was a pure greyhound so I tried again and said I've been involved in the greyhound industry and it is not a greyhound, to which she replied that it is a show greyhound! I thought I would try another angle so I then asked if it will have to be assessed to get the green GAP collar. Oh no says she, show bred greyhounds dont have to wear the collars only race bred greyhounds. I know what show bred greyhounds look like too, I have friends who breed both show and race, they're often even larger than race bred, and deeper chested. This was neither race or show but the other thing that had me wondering, and doubting, was her statement that show bred greys dont have to wear the GAP collars if they become pets. I doubt this very much, but thought I'd better ask here to be sure.

Yep, we've had lots of wanna be whippets running, from Pharoah hounds to Golden Retrievers to 3 legged Kelpies (at our last meet) there's pics of her in album 2, to iggies, JRTs, you name it, they've run here. We are primarily a whippet racing club, but sometimes whippet owners have another breed as well, or they invite their friends along who might have another breed. Evolvings fluffy dogs ran, I cant remember the breed. (Old timers disease) this is Peanut a chi.min pin x Here's a lab and a greyhound having a go IMG_3141t by kirislin, on Flickr Here's what happened next, probably why labs aren't race dogs. IMG_3144t by kirislin, on Flickr

Thanks, we've got alot of interest and new members because of the photos. People love to see their own dog in action. It's such a change from the way they are at home. A bit of Jekyll and Hyde happening.
-
Yep, and even mild mannered gentle whippets can get carried away, it doesn't mean they're vicious.

Concord is coming in to land, get those damn dogs off the runway!! 5F6A0957dppt by kirislin, on Flickr

Aha! have a look here, it's the perfect example of why they wear them. This is not a nasty whippet, but things get pretty intense sometimes with that rush of adrenaline.
-
thanks, I'm not sure who that whippet is but it certainly flew. Another DOLer, Cougar came along for a look see yesterday too and had a camera, I'm hoping she got some good shots and might add them here.

the first of the photos are up, still lots more to edit. They look best viewed full screen.

There's quite a few, my computer is chugging away through some now, but I'm so tired I'll have to finish it over a few days. I think I got some good ones with the wide angle siggy lens.

What a brilliant day we had. Slight hiccough at the start when we were locked out for a short while, many thanks to Belinda for saving the day and bringing the key and thankyou to all for your patience and understanding. Quite a few new faces and some young pups who will hopefully continue on to bigger and better things. It's heartening to see the word is getting out about our great little club, I really think we're living up to our name of being a social racing club. The council have been fantastic, once again the grass was freshly mown and smooth as a babys bottom, well not quite but the dogs weren't hampered by that awful paspallum. I'll bet there's lots of tired whippies at home now. Check your whippets feet for dirt and grit, and wash them if necessary in warm soapy water. Dirt around the nails is a source of infection so watch out for it. It also gives you a chance to check their feet for splits and abrasions, look under their stopper pads. Thanks to everyone for being vigilant and picking up dog poo, the system worked well and we had a very full stinky bag at the end of the day, thankyou to brave Erica who took it to the bin. I took plenty of photos but they'll take a bit of editing, might be a day or two before I get them up. Good to see quite a few DOLers there too!
-
Of course, the only condition being we get to see the photos! :D It's a fantastic photo opportunity, I used to post a notice in DOLs photo forum inviting people along. Evolving and Clicking Mad came to a few and had a good time and both got some amazing photos.

Might be fun if WE had a photojournalism thread here. I've only done it once on Anzac day a few years ago.
-
Yes Kibah does it too, leaves wet patches that initially made me think I had an incontinent whippet. I think it might be a comfort thing but I find it annoying because she sleeps with me and it makes suspicious looking stains on the mattress.
-
woo hoo, thanks for the likes!

we will probably be there until 2pm possibly longer, it would still be worth dropping in. Come and say hello to me if you come. a reminder to anyone coming, all dogs to be kept on leads unless actually having a run after the lure. All dogs running must have a muzzle on, we have them for sale or hire on the day. Bring poo bags and clean up after your dogs. Please dont walk your dogs on the sports oval/cricket pitch. Here's our facebook page if you want to "like" us :D We are very likeable. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Yarra-Valley-Whippet-Social-Racing-Club/172335819461281
