It's a borrowed whelping box, if it was mine I'd take the damn things out. -
Pig Rails In Whelping Boxes, Help Or Hazard?
Kirislin replied to Kirislin's topic in Breeders Community
Yes, it does make sense, thanks. I dont think lower ones would have helped the boy when he was between her and the rail and she leant back on him. It might have helped the little girl though. When Marcus comes to visit I will ask if it's possible to remove them. I hate them. -
Rather than saving a puppy, I'm curious if anyone else has had puppies squashed between mother and these bloody awful things. Twice now I've had to rush to the rescue of a puppy, thankfully I recognised the awful ear piercing screams as something different to the normal whimpering that they sometimes do. The first time was the boy being crushed across his spine and just now the tiny girl across her neck! I hope they will both be OK. I've now got some blankets to roll up and jam down the back of them to hopefully stop the puppies getting stuck between Neko and the rail.

Yes. I'm wondering if he will slow down or just keep growing. I bred a litter of whippets from normal sized parents and all of them turned out to be whoppers, and not just tall, but big heavy boned things. My 2 boys Tag and Puck are from that litter. The parents were not related, it was not a close mating at all, and neither is this one, since the male is imported. It will be interesting to see how they turn out. I can say the boy seems very calm and chilled out. The blue girl, (I think she's blue) is more lively. When they were still in utero I said to Iggy Mum that I bet one is calmer than the other and we worked out that we had a male and a female from their heart beats, IM picked up the speed difference so I already suspected that the female was the livelier one. She was on the left. :D

Poor Neko is making a political statement protesting womens rights, using the medium of art. "My children see me as nothing more than a body supplying them with milk" 5F6A5171dppt by kirislin, on Flickr

I dont think she will be mine, I think Marcus wants to take her home. I'll still get to see her alot though.

he was 300 gms at birth and this morning he weighed in at 500 gms. They're 5 1/2 days old, born very late Friday night.

I agree Scottsmum.

Yes, I was surprised about that. There are several events for pet dogs and a high jump competition, both of which always draw big entries and are popular with the general public. It does seem however, that the gap in interest between purebred dogs and novelty events for pets is forever widening Maybe the public just find traditional showing boring. Purebred dogs can do novelty events, or very physical sporting events which will show off their athletic abilities and are much better spectator sports for the person on the street. I don't see why it would be any more boring than poultry, cattle or rabbit showing? *shrugs* My understanding was that the decision had nothing to do with the public and everything to do with Show Committee politics. Most notably the politics of giving the horse exhibitors more room. How quickly some show committees forget how they made dogs centre stage during the equine influenza outbreak and how dog exhibitors kept them afloat. The impact on income will be significant. Time to wait and see what happens next. It would have been nice for people to see and meet Dachsie breeders if they were interested in the dogs as opposed to walking the mine field of finding a dog on Gumtree. What I meant was that I dont see alot of non show people spectating at dog shows, I dont know if they find it boring or not, it was just a thought. When I think about it our big aggie show's changed so much, they've even sold off alot of the grounds that once had beautiful historic stables and put shops there, pulled down the main arena and put lots of food stalls there. I was shocked when I went last September, I saw very few animals. My impression was it's mostly noisy rides and gourment food tents now. They had a stand set up for spectators to watch the dogs but it was only about 1/3 full if that.

Yes, even when you look at the size of him compared to Nekos hind leg, and that photo was taken when he was only 2 days old! If ever I doubt whether a caesar was the right thing to do, I only have to look at that photo to convince myself it was.

 or a great dane. He might slow down and end up normal size but I dont know, I swear I could see him growing yesterday and today. I weigh them every morning and he put on 60gms yesterday. The tiny girl only put on 20gms. He's leaving her behind in leaps and bounds so he needs to slow down soon.

Marcus took this with his phone when they were 2 days old. It gives you an idea of how big the boy is. I'm starting to think girl #1 is a blue. We couldn't tell at first but as each day goes by she changes colour a bit. image1 9 by kirislin, on Flickr

I'm assuming this is something you buy, does any one have any good websites about puppy developmental stimulation that are free?

 But what's wrong with Fatty Boombah? Well it certainly suits him. I reckon he's at least twice as big as Secret now. I could practically see him growing today. He was 390gms this morning, I think he'll be well over 400gm tomorrow, all he's done today is drink milk.

I'm still taking her temp twice a day. I'll pick up if there's something wrong, surely...... I am just still going through the anxious stage. I dont think men go through this, I might be wrong, but I suspect it's something to do with being female even though my own baby making hormones should be all dried up by now. Every time I've ever bred anything, be it horse or litters of puppies I go through an anxious and then depressed stage. I know I should be happy! It will come. Once I am certain they're OK and Neko is more relaxed I will be too, but right now, we're both very sleep deprived.

My Neko had a caesar on Friday night. The vet deliberately left the placentas in her, his reasoning was that they are better expelled naturally, less chance of her bleeding. He told us to watch for them and put her on a course of AB's for 6 days. As far as we know she has expelled one and she ate it. We took her back the following day around midday and he gave her a shot of oxytocin( sub cutaneous) and told us to watch for contractions in about 15 minutes. We didn't see them. We gave her a 2nd shot as instructed by him at 3.30pm and still no contractions or discharge. Her temp is normal, about 1 degree higher than her usual temp but that's because she's feeding puppies. She seems well in herself and I have no reason to take her to the vets based on her behaviour. I suppose I am just looking for reassurance that it's OK. She might have passed them and we just haven't seen them. If she still had them inside her would she be showing signs of sickness now?

they belong to Marcus and I've told him that for years that he could have a little side earner being a hand model, I think I even mentioned his lovely hands way back with Widget's litter. He thinks they're not Anglo Saxon enough, I tell him that's part of the appeal but he's not interested.

I'll pass them on, so you're going with an S theme. I forgot to mention! The sire, Bispy has a tradition going with his line. I there is a male puppy born and it is black they like the name to rhyme with "Ipsy" so his dad is Bipsy, which I think is the cutest name. Bipsys dad was Dipsy I think, and he might have been from Ipsy. We dont have to follow the tradition but we might. Just have to use a letter of the alphabet that sounds good with ipsy behind it. For the other girl I was thinking Mystery, because we cant quite work out what colour she is.

puppies born in Jan.
-
29/1/16 3 puppies born by caesarian section. 1 boy 2 girls.
-
Yes, I told Marcus that I thought it might be good and he likes it too, so perhaps we already have a name for one.
-
I've never heard of it. What is it?
-
Yeah maybe, Marcus is probably looking for names. I was thinking Secret.
