  1. I always put my 2 boys (whippets) on leash until we know the dog, and sometimes if I know the dog I will leash the boys because they are bullies. If a dog shows the slightest timidity they'll bark to make it run, and then they give chase. They love it, but no one else does. That's their one vice and I do my very best to avoid it happening.
  2. with regards to having to carry dog poo on your walk, I've found it's better to use a fresh bag as a carry bag, so I bag up the poo, tie a knot in that bag, and then put in in a fresh bag. Then when the next dog does another one, tie it up and put it in the carry bag with the other one. It only uses one more bag than you'd planned but it makes carrying it so much more bearable.
  3. I heard of this happening a few years ago, cant remember where but it was the councils undertaking it and then fining the dog owners for the cost of testing as well as the littering fine. It's amazing how much cheaper DNA testing is becoming now. I can imagine in a few years it will be the norm.
  4. My dogs dont get to see drunk people. I would be wary of the drunks and try to keep my dogs away. On the couple of occasions I recall here the drunks got aggressive, once with my horse who tried to nip him (probably because Rowdy the horse sensed something was not right) and another time a woman who got rough with one of my whippets. Pisspots begone!
  5. But there aren't 12,000 homes available every year for one breed no matter how well socialised they are. The way I understood what Kirty is saying is that there should be alot less greyhounds bred in the first place which I totally agree with.
  6. beautiful puppy, and what lovely symmetrical wrinkles!
  7. I wonder if he might have been a "swimmer" puppy? I've only seen them as puppies but if they didn't get treatment I'm wondering if they turn out like you've described.
  8. But even if this could be proven to be more than imagination - having a dog witness the death of another dog is not illegal and the carcasses had different stages of decomposition as well so there isnt anything to show it wasnt one dog at a time. The entire situation would most definitely appear to be totally horrible and un acceptable - but whether or not there is anything to be done about someone shooting their own animals, when a quick shot by an experienced shooter is considered a quick non suffering death especially in rural areas, in a reasonably secluded rural area, where shooting might be something to be expected, in a reserve like this around here there are people out shooting every day of the week, and leaving their spent cartridges and bullets everywhere with the bodies in a reserve just as shooters often do with foxes and roos etc What are they going to charge them with? Perhaps all they'll be charged with is illegal dumping, and maybe from the Qld greyhound board (I dont know what they're called) bringing the sport into disrepute.
  9. I wonder how many greyhound trainers are in that area.
  10. This is what makes me think they were probably legally killed. You'd have to be all kinds of stupid to illegally kill and dump even a single greyhound if you were a trainer. even legally killed, they've been illegally dumped so that in itself will hopefully lead to prosecution, but all that aside legal or illegal this brings terrible unwanted attention to the greyhound industry. They could be doing themselves and everyone else out of business, they must be morons.
  11. It makes you wonder about the mental capacity of the people responsible for this. Surely they understood, sooner or later the bodies will be found and it wont do the industry any good even if they personally dont get caught.
  12. I hope they can trace them through DNA then.
  13. is there a way you can pair the information about how it was and what it did with education, without coming over as a know it all pain in the bum. Explain the need for her to back off with the attention on the dog so it learns to think a bit more independently and be comfortable in its own shell.
  14. If they were illegally killed I'm thinking anything that would identify them will have been removed. Does Qld DNA test their greyhounds? I wonder if that would at least be a way of tracing their parentage and perhaps narrowing down the creeps responsible.
  15. She had actually been asleep like this and looked so cute, but I moved her tail to protect her modesty and she woke up. You lookin' at me? 5F6A8632_1 by kirislin, on Flickr and the chance was gone. 5F6A8633_1 by kirislin, on Flickr
  16. You've captured the most incredible moments of tenderness and behaviour that reminds us of how close we are to them.
  17. I'd be interested in this too. I started a thread a while ago on this very subject because I'd cared for my whippets, kept them at the right weight on a diet of healthy unprocessed food and Penny got to just over 15 years, but at the same time I knew of 2 big fat labradors that were fed crap, had filthy teeth, their coats always stunk, they continually dragged their backsides along the ground, were riddled with arthritis and yet they out lived Penny!
  18. My friend rescued a white shepherd. She was at her correct weight when he got her and she weighed about 23kgs back then. She's a big fat thing now but still the most friendly mellow girl.
  19. a retired greyhound. They're often under 30kgs.
  20. I certainly didn't type "ugly ashtray" in the search box. I was looking for anything sighthoundy and it came up. They'd have to pay ME to buy it, and then I'd chuck it out anyway.
  21. Just for a laugh. This item is being sold as sighthound (being greyhound, whippet or borzoi) ashtray. Personally I think they're polar bears. What do you reckon, sighthounds or polar bears? sighthounds or polar bears?
  22. I used to cook my dogs food into a loaf that smelt pretty good. I've changed now and feed cooked veggies but the meat is now raw so I do a big cook up of the veggies similar to what I used to do. Freeze it into meal size portions and defrost to add the evenings raw mince and stir it through. They like it but I think they liked it cooked better. I used to buy what ever veggies were on special if I could, carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato, leafy greens, celery and a cabbage type veg that was added at the very end so it was almost raw, they love raw cabbage. I also put split peas, rice, garlic and rosemary (from my garden) in.
  23. that was a lucky escape for everyone. I can see his eyes changing to that pale straw coloured yellow.
