  1. Dont know if this might help. When we moved to our new house we had no fences so couldn't allow Marlin free access to downstairs. So I made her a large litter box, used an old rubber car boot liner, lots of kitty litter and some synthetic grass on top, and put it on our large balcony complete with some screening plants around it for privacy. I moved some of her poo onto it. Everytime we took her there before we moved in I showed her her corner and tried to encourage her to use it, she just looked at me like I was bonkers I was beginning to get really worried that we were going to have a problem. Then come moving day we were sitting around having a beer after all the hard work and she just took herself off to poo corner and did her business like it was completely natural! Marlin was about 14 months old when we moved, she had been used to free access to a garden with grass and shrubs, never been taught to go on command, she has never had an accident inside since we moved two years ago. We now have fences and she has a downstairs dog door so she can sit on the grass and watch the world go by, but our living area is upstairs so she still has her poo corner on the balcony. I have found that most dogs, when visiting, will naturally use the area, others will not go near it. I use the crystals type litter and find it does not smell if changed weekly and the 'grass' is soaked in disinfectant and sun dried. So I think if you persevere she will eventually ger the idea, one other problem had was Marlin hated pooing when on lead, I have also come accross dogs that will bot do it if anyone is watching
  2. RIP Beautifull Miss Molly, she will always be in your hearts
  3. So hard..... RIP your little man, loved so much, never forgotten.
  4. Best get the vet to run a test first.
  5. What a sad end to what should have been such an exciting time for this little guy and his new family. Thank you Owey for loving him and taking care of him and coming to DOL for advice. I hope you will eventually feel you can give your heart and love to another puppy, they bring such joy to a home. RIP Bailey
  6. Unfortunately it seems that the throw away society of today apply their 'standards' to their pets too.
  7. Two of our loyal and brave dogs lost this week. Run free DEVIL and QUAKE may you both enjoy endless fun with your many freinds over the rainbow bridge.
  8. I dont wash her too often as in summer she swims everyday and just gets rinsed off, she is very heavy coated and tangles heaps, I am allways fighting knots! I have used leave in conditioners and they did help a bit. Recently I had cause to wash her before a long road trip, as 12 hours in the new car with smelly dog was not an option :) I used Curash Baby 2 in 1, advertised as anti tangle. WELL what a difference! She came up soft and shiny, brushed out beautifully, and 4 weeks on is still soft and silky, and much less tangles. I know what I will be using in the future. Interesting never noticed if she dries quicker with conditioner, she takes AGES to dry and will not have a bar of the hairdrier.:D
  9. If you do a search for 'raw feeding' and tick the in topics only box you will find lots of interesting reading in this forum. I have fed raw since my girl was 10 weeks old. I live remote so is difficult to get good kibble at a reasonable price. My basic recipe is raw roo, or chicken mince,I process a variety of vegies, cooked pumpkin, and some fruit once a month and freeze into small blocks. Her daily allowance is generally 50% meat & veg and 50% raw meaty bones, most butchers sell bones suitable depending on the size of your dog, and chicken necks are freely available. I add some offal once a week, omega oil daily, an egg occasionally, a sprinkle of probiotic. Once a week I assemble the whole lot, I feed 2.5% body weight, so all the bones go in a pile and get divided up into 7 lots, so I just grab a bag out of the freezer each day. Meat and vegies are assembled daily. Some days she only gets bones, a chicken frame is her whole days allowance. As a puppy she got more offal, more eggs, some rice, and natural yogurt. Your dog is still growing so you might need to add some of these and more bones probably. Balance things out over a week. This works for me, everyone finds their own routine, nothing is set in stone. I am lucky in that I have a large freezer in the shed that I fill with meat and bones on my large shopping excursions (about every 4-6 months). I too have had mince from leonards that was a bit smelly, but have found another leonards that only minces its frames and offcuts, not including the seasonings which is what seems to make it smell, and they keep it much fresher only processing daily. I also found a source of roo meat where I can get their miss labeled meat much cheaper, around $2.50 kg, a butcher where I get bones at $1 a bag. It is not really about keeping costs down though, I do like quality, and feel I am giving her the best I can at a good price. I have never really sat down and costed it out, but at a guess it works out to less than $10 a week. She is healthy, no allergies, good firm small poos ( the best thing about feeding raw  ) and has a great coat. Good luck with your reading, some of it will seem confusing at first, daunting even, but just go with it!
  10. Thanks dancinbcs. We are not going far, local but vet is away atm, and the next nearest is 400km. I had thought Advantix, but was not sure if it was still OK if she swims, may just do it fornightly until we get home.
  11. I live in NW WA and do not usually use a tick prevention. Marlin picked up a brown tick after an over night camp out, I check her most days and removed it immediately. We are planning a longer camping trip next month and would like to start her on some tick prevention, problem is she swims daily so spot ons and collars will not be effective. She is a 3yr old border collie with a very long fluffy coat which takes hours to dry :) Has any one any recommendations? Must be available to buy online too.
  12. HaHa still too warm here to leave food out for long. I agree I dont think that they mind cold at all but then mine isnt fussy.:D Mind you we quite often give ours a 'gravy' made by swishing a little water in the frypan when we have cooked our meat in it to disolve any juice and bits left, letting it cool a little and pour over her meat, she thinks it is something quite special

Oh Jed, hugs to you, RIP all your angels at the bridge "Missing them gets easier every day because even though it is one day further from the last time you saw each other, it is one day closer to the next time you will"
  14. All I can offer is lots of hugs I dont know how you are coping, but I can imagine how difficult it is. Good luck to you both, you will make the right decision when the time comes I am sure.,
  15. Tommy was a hard working, hard living Irish miner. He travelled the world working the mines, he spent many years in Australia at Laverton and Wittenoom too, eventually retiring to Perth. Jessie was a feisty silky terrier that was bought as a companion for Tommys wife, Jessie thought different and she stole his heart and became his shadow. Wherever he was she was right behind, she helped keep five grandchildren in check and taught them how to treat four legged friends. Allways up for an adventure, the car could not leave without her. She kept Tommy company when he went to the club, even having her own bowl for a (much watered down) beer, they would have their two beers and a chat and then snore away the afternoon in the chair together. Jessie was even known to sneak into church on occasion when she got bored waiting for him. Jessie turned 12 early last year and was slowing down, but then so was Tommy. The spectre of Wittenoom had caught up with him and he was told his time was short. Shortly after this news, Jessie got very sick and he was told her time was up, in June, it was with much sadness that Tommy gave her her wings. On January 1st 2012 Tommy passed away, I know that Jessie was there to welcome him with barks and kisses and perhaps even a beer to cross the bridge together. Tommy and Jessie's ashes are to be buried together in the memorial garden in the church they both attended. RIP Uncle Tommy and Jessie May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand. ~Irish Blessing
  16. Love this thread, have heaps I could add, but love these two sharing a joke.....
  17. I have used curash powder with great success on rashes from her laying in the wrong thing in the garden.
  18. I have tiles in the living areas and timber in the bedrooms. I use one of those microfibre mops and a sploosh of metho in the water and have lovely shiny floors. About once every couple of months I use a scrubber on them, but that is more for my satifaction! Vinegar works nearly as well when I run out of metho.
  19. OMG she is gorgeous Looks like she is already putting the sun back in your life. I look forward to lots of pics of her growing up.
