The Right Thing When It Might Be The Wrong Dog
Rebanne replied to emigremlin's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have to say as a nurse who works night shift I would not be very tolerant at all. I'd give you a week at the most. Night shift really screws you up and then not to be able to sleep and then be expected to be on your game while looking after patients, yeah it's not easy. Talk to the breeder. As Nekhbet says it's not going to be a quick fix if the dog has never lived alone before. -

doesn't Harri get puppy pennies to put in his purse

Good luck, it's hard when your dog gets diagnosed with something very uncommon.

I adopted a greyhound who was desexed at 4 and 1/2 years old. His sac never shrunk, we called it his purse  But other desexed males I have adopted all had nothing and the one male who I have had desexed, he too ended up with nothing. I wouldn't get it done.

Pity she strung you along for 8 months

you didn't make it very clear, sounded very much like you were defending the breeder. Yeah stuff happens and yes you did used to have 18 months to register the litter but as a breeder you are obligated to provide those papers in a timely manner and if it isn't then to let the buyer know, preferably before they take the pup home. And you don't ignore phone calls and emails from your puppy buyer. I hope they got a good rap over the knuckles

the sponge method seems to be highly recommended overseas. Try putting him on a nipple another pup has got started that may help

As the dog is 4 make sure you get the papers on the day you pick her up and that the breeder has signed the back. Also get her signed microchipped paperwork and vaccination card.

speak to your breeder not your friend, you're dog sounds fine, it's not a competition to get the heaviest dog, quickest. Here's the standard LINK there is no weight recommendation in the standard.

I'd go a chiro/muscle man first.

I don't breed for the pet market, there really isn't one for greyhound puppies unless they are free. My next litter being bred is for me to get a bitch to breed on with and also show, but the breeding side is more important, one other pup is going to a show home most likely not for breeding. It is an outcross so not quite sure what will be produced for showing. The rest will be going to pet homes, we know this but we are not breeding for pet homes, they are a by product. If I was breeding a more popular breed, breeding a pet litter every now and again; yeah why not. I certainly don't think that breeders that do that are bad. I know breeders that have more popular breeds and breed them (registered)for pets to help subsidise their main breed who can be hard to home and have extra costs in the keeping of 1/2 dozen pups for a longer time.

You need to read Steve's excellent post again. Do you have any idea how hard it is for some breeders to find good homes for their pups? We don't all breed cav's or golden's. Plenty of dodgy breeders on DOL eta the cav and goldie breeders also have to weed through potential homes, they just usually have a greater number of people interested in their breeds.

about 95% i'd say, Did you have people chasing a pup they could breed with to get height or speed in their pigging BA??? 95% that were good is good! The gumtree ones were 2 sending standard emails, I'll buy the whole litter thing, how much, when it was only one pup advertised and yes one was from a woman who got very irate I didn't want any greyhound of mine doing what it was bred to do, catch bunnies on her property. I looked her up and then reported her for selling underage pig dog pups  A few tyre kickers from the DOL listing including a couple of people who wanted to argue the breed with me, never having owned one, but google had told them several things (incorrect) and wouldn't believe me when I said their info was wrong. Except for one person who was new to showing, all my pups have gone to other greyhound show people in Australia and the 2 pet ones went to Hawaii. eta so I have found that there wasn't really much difference between quality of puppy buyers between DOL or Gumtree and only a tad more DOL enquiries then Gumtree ones. Too many cheap or free ones to be had
