yeah there are but what if your dog gets out and while out it snags itself on something and it releases the collar .. the dog wont have the id attached to it after, Seen it happen with our cat in her cat run many times with hers. breakaway collars are useless. I tried them on my dogs and they were pulled off multiple times when the dogs played. My dogs only wear collars when we are out and about at a show or on holidays.

I'll disagree with Maddy and say bloat is a real worry in greyhounds, though I too have never had one get it nor any of my German Shepherds when I had them. I do know of several show bred greyhounds that have had bloat and some have died. Any deep chested dog is at risk. Feeding out of a raised bowl used to be in, then it was out, now I think the feeling is it makes no difference. However I feed my raised only cause it's a long way down for them. I had a speed eater and used a slow go bowl for him which worked very well. No enforced exercise before or after a meal, feed them twice daily and step in if they decide, as mine often do, that a nice game right after eating is a good idea. Read up on Pannus and Thyroid problems. Both fairly common in race bred greys, easily controlled, and shouldn't put you off a dog that is suitable for you in every other way.

Told She Was Desexed.. Find Out She Isn't. Accidental Mating
Rebanne replied to Wilfred's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sold a male dog from the pound once that the vet thought had been desexed by a farmer. All was well until a little bitch (desexed!) joined the household. Turned out the dog was entire with both testicles firmly tucked up in the tummy. -

must admit I wouldn't even consider not asking for a tattoo when my dogs are desexed. -
I think there is also a walk being organised in either Bendigo or Ballarat. plus the GAP Xmas party is soon as well as well as GSN's party. GSN GAP

what do the owners of the aggressive dogs do when they have a go at your dog?
-
you need to separate them unless supervised for now until you get some profession advice. Two visit's to the vet is at least one visit too many.

excellent news! -
For my backyard I just spray them a couple of times in spring. There are none on the slipping track where I take them running.

sounds like your dog had periodontal disease rather then just dirty teeth. Quite common in racebred greyhounds. My greyhound ended up having all his teeth out. He managed fine without them.

Yeah, me too. OP didn't say she googled to learn about the condition. I often google things relating to my breed, it helps keep me up to date.

I haven't found any insurance company that covers things like surgical AI's or c-sections.

I agree with this

Racing greyhounds get osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and pannus (eye disease which will blind them if not treated) amongst other things including thyroid problems.

I believe all greyhounds have to be DNA tested before being used for breeding and that this has been in for some years now.

All my martingale collars have the webbing base and welded fittings, would use nothing else. The webbing is similar to seat belt material so super strong. They are proper martingales which require adjusting each time they are used, not just slipped on and off. I have some 2 inch collars but much prefer 1 1/2 inch and don't like the black dog martingales at all. We all have different tastes and experiences :)

Rebanne - do you know if there are limits in Victoria as to how many litters each bitch can have a year? There is something in place. I don't race greyhounds so am not up with all the in's and out's but talking to someone a few months ago there does seem to be some restrictions. The main one I recall is something along the lines of: if the bitch didn't race and/or didn't win, they were allowed 2 litters to prove their worth as a brood bitch. If none of the off spring did any good and the owner wanted to breed again, they had to say why and get approval from the racing board. All matings are recorded, all results of those matings have to be recorded, misses, how many born alive, how many born dead, if the numbers don't match up between being born and ear marked (12 weeks) what happened to the missing pups (not sure if you need a vet to sign of on ones that died in those 12 weeks). Stud dogs were limited to 14 matings a month but I don't know the current regulations regarding this now everything is AI and often frozen semen is used. And of course semen is split into breeding units. As I said I don't race greys, mine are show bred, so a disclaimer: this is all what I am pretty sure happens, some of it did happen but might have changed, and I am relying on my memory which can be faulty :)

JANET FLANN: Well, they bludgeon them to death. That's quite common. But shooting is quite common. If they get to the vets to be euthanased properly they're lucky, really. Really???? Think this person needs to stop being a drama queen. Shooting - yes. Bludgeon, never heard of it happening. Yes some sick bars*&^d may have done it in the past, same as some rare few cut the ears off so they couldn't be identified. In Victoria nowadays all greyhounds disposed of have to be accounted for to the GRV.

Mine have never seemed to give two hoots if a pack member died. Only indication has been a slight period of adjustment while everyone sorted out the new pecking order. I let my other dogs out once when the leader passed. They just danced around, including on top of poor Zoe, wanting me to throw the ball. Never done it again.

Why don't you contact them and ask? it's the only way you will know. :) Plenty of breeders transport their pups all over the country but some don't.

umm, you are after semen from any other dog as long as it's a Schnauzer? Any Schnauzer? And to be used straight away? Hmm
