  1. A miniature dachshund can and will jump over 1m high barricades when you are so worried about them squeezing out in under the fence. I almost died the day I learnt Gyp could jump so high. Luckily, a standard dachshund, not so high. Pronounced doxen, not dash-hound. Learnt that one the hard way and everyone else I know calls them dash-hound. Meg assumes cockroach position every single night. No my dog will not fly away with her huge ears and no she is not called "Dumbo." No she does not drag her belly along the ground, my dogs are healthy and lean.

    Ruthless!

Congratulations I always love looking at your photo posts!!
  3. Very well written reply. Hope Billy found a loving home
  4. I first saw photos of Meg and her six brothers -yes six boys, no other sisters- and debated for two days whether to get her as we didn't have a dog at home and I suprisingly missed our old jack russel terrier. I booked off placement sick, drove the hour and a half to go see her with the money just in case and when I got there all I could here was this insane barking. I went in there and she jumped into my lap and wouldn't move. She is my heart dog and she has the most beautiful nature- she sat in my lap for the first few days, barked at my brother when he entered the house, sits in the window like a cat still and wows anyone she meets. trying to have a seven month old dachshund standard in my lap in a barina didnt work out as well as she liked.... Then this whirlwind called Gypsy came along, I had her flown over from Melbourne as no dachshunds in SA. She was timid at first, huge belly, bulging eyes.... my other half laughed at her and still calls her ugly dog. This dog chewed through 3 pairs of work shoes, sleeps with her tongue out, stole teddies and undies within the first week of settling in. Complete opposide personailty to Meg. And they get along great.
  5. While this thread may be quite upsetting and remind you of previously loved dogs, maybe just take some condolence in other peoples posts and whilst we may be in alone in grieving for that individual pet, many a people know the loss and heartbreaking feelings of losing a beloved pet. Better to have lost and loved, than to have never have loved at all. I agree with what Longdog previously posted, death is not dealt with very well at all- people reluctant to talk about it in fear of upsetting someone or offending, but at the end of the day we are born and we live and we die and thats just the way life is- we need to make the most of it while we can. Well, thats the conclusion I've come to anyway... And I like to believe we will reunite with out beloved dogs on the other side. It'd be a nice reunion after a long life. xoxo. -apologies if have offended anyone-
  6. The first dog we had put down was our family dog Gypsy a fox terrier, who had a back injury that wouldnt heal due to being kicked by a stranger. I wasn't there but had told mum over and over to let me be there, but done it on her own one day while we were at school. Cried for so many hours, she was such a funny dog. Never had to put our cats down, Puss is five years old this year and still going strong. When I did work experience I saw kittens get put down because a new litter had come in and they thought that they wouldnt find homes. I didnt cry during the procedure but afterwards cried my eyes out. It's sad thing to watch and i'm glad i will never have to do that, respect to those that do. I dnt wanna think about putting my girls down, luckily they r young and i dnt need to consider that. But I know I will be there when the time comes, as hard as it may be. I can understand how people cannot be there- its an emotionally draining and stressful experience.
  7. Love the first one, when is it Kibah? Has no feet on the ground... looks like she's flying!!

  9. LOL love this thread. I didn't teach Meg to beg, open the door or get in the back seat of the car, she learnt it all on her own the smart girl. She also learnt how to wake me up so she can go pee in the morning because my sleeping pattern is so stuffed from shift work. Gypsy refuses to do anything I asks and just submits by rolling on her stomach- I definately need to do more training with her!
  10. I don't blame you for overreacting- for a long time after I was attacked and bitten I tended to be wary of medium-large sized dogs, but I've since read about body language with dogs and I can gather which ones are wary and which ones are friendly. Even so I find it hard to keep my heart rate down when I see a dog thats rushes, I think it's the adrenaline rush And in Sydney too it's going to be hard to find a place to exercise your lil' Dobe. I find myself lucky that I am in a small country town and know where all the bad dogs are, including the ones across the road that I've seen attack children and elderly ladies, to find that the council does nothing. But in this case if she's be threatened with confiscation and STILL breaks the rules then enough is enough. She KNOWS what the dog is like and has not changed their behaviour. Soemthings NEEDS to be done. There is always going to be a risk when you walk your dog simply because you never know whats out there. Good on you for wanting to socialise your dog, and it sounds like the way you've trained her so far with strangers and kids is fantastic. If more owners were like you, there would be less of these attacks out there.
  11. So sorry to hear about this incident- it must have been very scary and a giant stick is needed for the lady who had her dog off lead when it has been reported twice.... Does she realize that the dog could kill if the owner wasn't strong enough or quick enough?? Every time I pop in to read the threads there are always more stories about people and their pets being rushed, or attacked, and it is always sad to read. I just hope no DOL member or dog owner loses their beloved pet like this. I have never been rushed by another dog with my 2 girls, I have been attacked by dogs however and it is a scary experience. I hope your Dobe puppy recovers ok and doesn't develop any aggression I personally would love a dobe puppy to raise, I am a strong believer in how you raise and treat the dog has a very big influence on behaviour in general. Hope the silly lady realizes what could happen and something is done about it...
  12. The excess is that you pay, and anything after that the company should cover for it providing its in line with the product disclosure statement. You'll have to read the differences between major medical and comprehensive... can't remember off the top of my head.
  13. Just outta pure curiosity and to hopefully make a fun thread: What is your career path/what do you do for a living? And if your dogs were human, what profession would they be? Eg. I'm a registered nurse, Gypsy would be a exterminator service or judge of a food contest. And Meg would be a professional singer or on a chat show. Enjoy
  14. I've just applied for accidental cover so hopefully I get that. Never had a dog that's been really sick in this family, but you never know. Will feel a lot better about going to the vet now though!
  15. My two girls had urgent in their advertisements- and I love the thought of giving a rescue dog a forever home. As much as I love the cuteness of puppies I would not mind a more mature dog EFS
  16. Got bitten by my best mate's ex-boyfriends heeler cross... ended up with a bit of fat- yes fat from my leg- sitting on sock and blood everywhere. Best bruise I'd ever had. Been hearded in the middle of a street and knocked over by rotwiellers. My two girls have caused no damamge as yet
  17. Mine thought dachshunds weren't for real men... And then he met Meg
  18. This is pretty boring but I'll add it simply because first time I got a decent photo of Gypsy, and do excuse my big nose. And one of the cat before he grew up:
  19. I have Gypsy and Meg... and I've got honey picked out for a female black and tan dachshund when I convinve everyone to let me have one
  20. Gypsy is a offender for that IT looks sooo cute and funny at the same time, but I don't think any issues.
  21. My first dachshund was like it- and she still very is much a sook, follows me everywhere, cries when I'm not there etc, but she has been a lot better since I got Gypsy. Mine follow me everywhere- sometimes not even eatting their dinner to follow me- and sook if I leave them at my boyfriends house, however I socialised them a lot with other people and dogs so they are pretty good now, and very happy to be left outside for longer periods of time. It sounds like you have a good bond to your new puppy :D
  22. Aw she's a cutie- fantastic photo :D
  23. Awww @ owned, those photos are beautiful.
  24. My dogs spent all day inside during the heat... it reached 43 degrees today... still 38 degrees atm... So the girls slept all day... and so did I
  25. It's 33 here... and yesterday was still in the forties at 6 o clock at night.
