  1. Cane toads!!! Watch out for them. I used to live in the Byron Shire (near Lismore but costal) and in summer they were in epic proportions. They are poisonous and can kill dogs. Agriculturally macadamias are the main thing grown As well as coffee (the only area in Aus where coffee grows) Dairy farms are common around there too. I remember going to a lot of agricultural shows around the area throughout highschool. So I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot. Be prepared for stinking hot summers Think Adelaide summers, but humid. Be flood ready too. Lismore is prove to flooding. Good luck
  2. I would do it, if after the research is done they could give me back the ashes of my angel.. Poor Charlie
  3. Awww how beautiful!! Happy birthday for tomorrow miss Annabelle
  4. I remember reading somewhere on here that the average life span of a dog in AUS was only 5 years.. Of course I can't remember where I read that.. Jees I'm useful
  5. Hey Ruski, It might be a good Idea to post this your predicament in the behaviour and training section. This thread is meant to be just to inform people about huskies as a breed. You'll find an answer faster posting this in another section
  6. :D I wish I'd had the choice to Euth my husky. She was my heart dog. We were training in the yard. I was a bit of a spaz and managed to drop the leash. She ran. I followed her up the street from a distance. I didn't want to encourage a game of chasey. I lost sight of her, thought she went into a yard. So i ran into 3 peoples yards. She wasn't in any of them. Up ahead I saw a green car following her. She was clearly scared and trying to escape the threatening car. I got to the side of the road, just in time to watch her run across the road. I watched in horror as a speeding truck ran over her head. She came out ok, somehow. Screaming like all hell. I ran over to her. She could still walk, despite wobbling. But she was bleeding from head wounds. Some kind stranger rushed us to the after hours vet. The vet said she looked fine and should make it through the night. But she died of internal bleeding. Had I have known that her chances were grim I would have had her Euthed and been there for her final minutes. Her last memories were of strangers and being caged up. :D
  7. Hope to make it. We're 'sledding' in Kuitpo tomorrow morning. Anyone else coming..
  8. They were actually fairly quiet and reserved compared to most of the terriers I met. They spend most of their time lying around in the sun.
  9. Happy Birthday Bert!! Sounds like a you had a great day!!
  10. I had two jack russell/ miniature fox terrier mixes. My parents decided against getting me a big dog because small dogs are less work.. Ah how wrong they were. They were full of beans, and when I couldn't occupy them they would find ways out of the yard. Oh and the ways the found, my god it was like living with Houdini. I think they get a bad rap for this reason. People buy them thinking they because they are small they will be easy keepers. Not so. They need to be stimulated or they will get bored and beat their boredom by barking, breaking stuff or escaping (All the reasons I've heard against terriers) I think they're great dogs, but far too often in the wrong homes. I don't know HOW many times I've seen a JRT being homed with an elderly person.
  11. I had a great chat at a show with my dream husky breeder. (I was starstruck ) It was great I got to meet all the dogs she was showing that day, ask her about her breeding plans etc. She was great at multi tasking. I didn't realise at first but she was getting her dog ready for the Best in Show run off.. She still had the time to have a conversation with me..And I got to help by holding the dogs.. Some breeders may seem intimidating, I always think it's worth it to go into any situation armed with knowledge. For example before I go to a show I look up all the breeders who I might want to speak to and might be there. I have a look at their dogs, try to memorize some names that kind of stuff. So that when I go up to strike up a conversation I don't feel like an idiot and I have some interesting things I want to ask them about.
  12. Good on you! I'm glad you managed to get her away from those aweful people. Looks like she fits right in with your lot. I hope she manages to find a loving home though.
  13. Luckily all his neighbours were too dead to complain.
  14. I'm still waiting to meet one.. I mean what if I'm somehow lappie repellent I do think I need to meet one before I start talking to breeders Ashleigh: Hi, I'm interested in a Finnish Lapp hond Breeder: Have you met a Lappie before? Ashleigh. Umm. no. but.. Breeder: Slams door in face Boyfriends question. Do their coats thin out a fair bit in the summer? Do their coats adjust to the climate of the area? It gets to zero most nights in winter here. Summers here are usually between 25 and 35 with the occasional heat wave. They would be able to survive that kind of temperature right? (Not like I'm going to keep my dog outside all the time)
  15. Esky was the 2nd husky I'd always longed for. We had her name picked out for her long before we even thought of purchasing her. I was doing all the right things, holding out waiting until it was the right time to add a second dog to our pack. I was in the process of contacting breeders when disaster struck. A terrible road accident left us without our Didge. I couldn't bear to be without a dog, so when Esky's breeder said she was happy to let me have one of her pups, I bought her sight unseen. Esky is the most beautiful dog I've ever seen. And she has really pup me through my paces as an owner. I've had so much quality time with her. I've been unemployed, (or barely employed) since we first got her, so every day with her is amazing
  16. Ah the mysteries of Off topic. Lower your expectations guys. (Who am I kidding, tis rather awesome)
  17. Hahah he said he did. Doesn't own one though. They had Akitas :D I just HAD to take to opportunity talking to a Finnish guy to ask him about lappies. (That's not sad is it? ;))
  18. Why does that make a difference? (Genuine question not taking the mickey) Furballs some breeds are more vocal than others. We need to at least know what breed you have before we are able to offer help.
  19. Just speaking to our friend in Finland. Asked him about the pronunciation of the word Lapphund He says it's Lap as in sit on my lap and hond as in pond. So lap - hond I'm sure I'm the only one that cares about this. But studying radio makes you pretty particular about pronunciations
  20. Beautiful.!! I love long exposures I kept trying to guess where all of these were taken though. LOL
  21. FREE!! *eyes light up* I've got no excuse not to go now
  22. Awesome. I wonder how long it goes for. I envision 1 very tired husky pup
