No idea how much Basset pups are normally , so no idea if they are trying to make money on the price they paid for it . Or it could well be a new puppy farm angle saying they have had it a week and it comes with all its bed etc too .
-
There is an 11 week old Basset pup on gumtree , they said they only picked it up a week ago . As it says parents are champion bloodlines and all heridtory testing done I thought it may well have come from a reg breeder rather than a Byb and the breeder may not be aware . They just changed the price from $3000 to $3500 . Anyone know anyone in Newcastle who breeds Bassets ? Still could be a Byb tho .

Can you contact her breeder? or try some boxer FB pages? My neighbors have an elderly BC they are looking after, was supposed to only be for 12 months while they got posted overseas, 3 years later the dog is still with them, the owners pay for all her meds etc and come visit when they come back to Oz , so it can be done, they just knew my neighbor from walking the dogs at the same place everynight and just asked. You really need boxer savvy people .

You only have to look at the RSPCA adoption page to see how wrong breed ID is! they clearly have NFI! That looks like a mixed crossbreed, even lab, but they would never label it that.

When I had my 3 year old girl done I gave permission at the beginning to use fluids if needed as I trusted the vet . She had complications , allergic reaction to anastetic and insides were a mess after 2 c sections so I'm glad I had given the go ahead.

I went to a new vet after my vet passed away and didn't gel with anyone at the practice and was amazed as it was $82 for a consult compared to $58 at my old vet. the meds were way more expensive too, and when i got a new pup the difference for a c3 and chip was $60 , so i took him back to my old vet and really liked the new vet who did his consult and have now been going back with Zelda too. they all seem to charge a surcharge for sunday consults now too, never used to.

Watching Lisa to the rescue confirms my opinion , product placement everywhere and vet with no clue on breeds . -
There is alot of good advice here from experienced owners and breeders of GSD's , take it onboard and don't rush because your vet said to, they are a business remember that. Get a second opinion from a vet who knows the breed, and then decide, don't rush into surgery that the pup may not even need.
-
i added up all the vet bills, and how much the insurance would have cost me, and even with a very expensive specialist op it was still cheaper than having insurance.

It's a hard one , but if you bred a quality poodle , sold it to what you thought was s good home , they decided they for whatever reason didn't want it anymore and didn't contact breeder but sold it entire on gumtree , ended up living s life of misery , being bred from and then sold on again when it was of no use , as apposed to possible health risks ? Which way to go ? Remember Leo ?

having a crate inside is a good idea with a child too, it gives the dog a peaceful place later if it wants to be left alone. you can have area's where the dog can go and where he can sleep in peace away from a small child.
-
Buy a bigger crate? Can you baby gate areas so he can come in and just be restricted to where he goes? The more he comes in the calmer he will get, just take small steps, don't expect him to come inside and know how to behave, reward him for going to his crate and being calm. Getting an older dog may help, but make sure it can cope with a puppy annoying it, and check it hasn't come from a kennel setup as then you will be teaching it the same house rules too.
-
Yes , a breeder who clearly doesn't want their dogs going to homes just to make money off . That's a good thing !
-
I think you need to go into more detail as to what the problems are first and have you had it since a pup etc skin allergies can be food or envoirment . Certain breeds are more prone to certain problems , did you research the things you may encounter and talk to the breeder about them ? i love BBs but health wise they are a nightmare .
-
I would work on the bringing him inside before you get another, can you crate train him ? Mine go straight to their crate when they come inside, then i let them out when they are settled. I have always added another dog when the other dogs were mature so it was very easy as they just follow the trained one and slot right in, however recently added a pup when older dog was not fully trained and its been VERY trying! The older one has gone backwards because of the pup.
-
So you adopted her before she was 8 weeks ? If so too early to leave mum , and illegal .
-
Given its a designer x breed i doubt the " breeder" gives a rats arse about genetic health issue 's the pup might have, the $ are what they are after.
-
You can ring vets now and find out . I did , they can range hugely in price from around $75 to $120 .
-
Personally I wait till it's due for its next vaccination after its arrived before I get the checkup at the same time . That way you have let the pup settle and you know a bit about it if the vet asks anything . Be careful about getting pushed into buying their food and flea treatment which is double what you pay online . Having a new pup can be as expensive as you let it be and everyone wants to sell you something .

I remember years ago when i first came here i wanted a chocolate lab, my ex wanted a dally, i asked our vet and he told me not to touch a lab as they had lots of health problems unlike dallys who didn't . ( he omitted to tell me they were the only breed prone to stone formation which mine had twice). I think its very difficult to know what breed might suit you. My old neighbours bought a Cav pup from a petshop, they worked full time so after a month or so they went back to the petshop and bought a Cocker pup, chaos ensued because although the breeds looked similar as i tried to point out to them cockers are gundogs! It barked allday and i had to mention it, and it was trashing the place and hard to walk as it barked at everything. thankfully they moved! -

I think its a great idea to have somewhere to go before you buy a dog to get advice, but vets are not the place. You wouldn't ask a doctor how to bring up your child. Vets have too much invested in food and vaccines etc to give an honest opinion. almost every vet i have ever been too, has told me feeding raw is bad and then tries to push their brand. Most still insist on yearly vaccs, even though research says otherwise now. Its like puppy pre schools run by vet nurses, how are they qualified in behaviour? good excuse to get pups into the surgery and cement more business thats all. -

Someone lent me a Sporn to try and they are good, except i was worried of him backing out of it as he is a scrawny pup! I use a headcollar now for the pup, but for a powerful dog you can't go past a prong, i walk my BT girl on one. -

Money grabber, and the vets she is from is just that. vets know nothing about dog behaviour, they will push their own food, vaccs, the list is endless. i dont see how it can be objective when they are a business.
