You're welcome Lindyx. I'm going to give the dried cranberries a try. I believe you can get them at the supermarket.

**urgent** Old Dog Needs A Home Asap
cavNrott replied to kirst_goldens's topic in General Dog Discussion
Here's that quote for you Kirst Goldens:- *If you fight you might lose. If you don't fight you've already lost.* Good for you for trying to help this little old dog. I love the oldies too. We can only hope the owner never gets another dog. If she'd taken care of his teeth in the first place they wouldn't be in this condition. -
My boy Cavalier, Bronson is good at recognising words too. My little blk/tan Cav girl, Dana is deaf and when she goes outside to wander around the backyard at night I can't see her and she can't hear me call her. If I can't find her I tell Bronson to find her. He's onto it right away and comes back inside with her tagging along. My son's Rottweiler recognises every toy she has by name. He tells her to get a particular toy and sure enough she comes back with the right one. I thought my younger Rott was pretty smart but this girl of my son's seems to understand every word he says to her.

How To Get Rid Of A Mouse Problem With Out Affecting The Dogs
cavNrott replied to BustaGirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
No way would I leave Pestmaster poison where a dog can get to it. It contains Brodifacoum which is lethal to dogs. It is not safe if ingested by dogs. Please don't reassure people it won't harm their animals. It will kill them either slowly or quickly, depending on how much of it they've eaten. We had a wild storm here a few weeks ago and a throw pack of rat poison blew into my yard along with green pellets that washed under the fence with earth from my neighbours garden. I suspected my dogs might have eaten some. I asked my neighbour if he had rat poison in his yard. He said he did and wrote down the ingredients listed on the packet. It contained Brodifacoum. I came across this packet of poison 24 hours after the storm and took my dogs to the vet for a blood clotting test the next morning. One dog was normal, the other one was not. He had Vit K injections and was on Vit K tablets for 3 weeks when another blood test was done. His final test was normal. He'd eaten some poison and would have suffered internal bleeding but for prompt vet treatment. The vet told me Brodifacoum was a second generation rodent poison and very potent. -
Cranberry creates a hostile environment for the bacteria to survive in the bladder. I've always had all my girls on Cranberry and after reading the other thread, have now put my boy on it also. None of them have ever had a UTI. My Rotty girl (R.I.P) who would now be 9 yrs 5 months old had a UTI at 3 months of age. Since then I've been using Cranberry without any of the dogs having a UTI. The Rotty girl never had another one either.

I was given the registered papers in a large puppy pack booklet when most of my pups were ready to go home. However I'm not interested in showing or breeding so I'm more than happy with a well bred pup on the limited register from health tested parents. It wouldn't have bothered me if the papers were not available at that time because I knew the blood lines and ancestry of the pups. The dogs I have who are on the main register were older when they came home and the papers were already in. There was one pup some years back that took almost 8 months to get papers from the breeder. To get to the point of me quoting oakway here. If one or more of your puppy buyers was interested in showing a nice pup they bought from you they wouldn't be able to until the papers arrived some 12 months later. Wouldn't that hold back the pup's show career?

Just wanted to mention that in dogs who have not been neutered that the prostate can cause problems with blood in the urine as well as causing some difficulty with pooping.

Thank God Dogs Doesn't Hold Grudges Because...
cavNrott replied to W Sibs's topic in General Dog Discussion
;)  Good one. Another person who thinks this story is a good one. The woman "Gave her a good walloping for killing a chook." What is funny about that. ;) Im sure it was a figure of speech. I doubt she literally "Gave her a good walloping for killing a chook." ETA: I honestly can't think of anything..... maybe I am the perfect owner ;) haha no I doubt it, I'll keep thinking. Thank you for that. I do not beat my dogs, if anything they get a good shaking and ticking off. I like my dogs to love me not fear me. As I said those who know me know how I treat my dogs. I didn't take Laneka's comments about giving the dog a good walloping literally either. -
No probs I think there is a thread about cruciate ligaments in either health or general. Best of luck with Porcha ;)

I've always given my females cranberry tablets as a precaution since my Rottweiler girl had a UTI as a pup. I have my Cavalier girl on 1 x 5000mg tablet a day and my Rottweiler on 10,000mg per day. After reading about Oscar I think I'll start my boy Cavalier on 5000mg daily. You can buy cranberry tablets or capsules at the chemist or health food store. Some supermarkets stock it as well.

With respect, conservative management is not a new treatment, it's a very old one. Also at only 11 weeks post cruciate rupture it is far too early to assess whether or not conservative management is successful. That the dog appears to be doing well at 11 weeks is not evidence or proof that conservative management works in the long term. 18 months to 2 years would be a reasonable period of time for an assessment, dependent on the activity level of the dog. With TPLO and most other surgical ligament repairs it's usually advised that activity is very restricted for a period of 12 weeks, particularly in the first 6 weeks where crate confinement is recommended with only on leash toilet breaks. That was the advice given to me when my young Rottweiler had TPLO. I observed the orthosurgeons rehab instructions and when my dog's knee had healed she was able to lead a normal life, running, jumping and playing with other dogs without any activity restrictions. Conservative management will probably work with an elderly dog who is a couch potato and has a very low level of activity. It can also work well with small dogs. Conservative management and very limited activity will allow scar tissue to build and may hold the knee steady in a small dog but in a large dog the scar tissue will eventually break down if the dog is younger and allowed normal activity for its age. Arthritis can be expected in most cases. If my small breed dog ruptured a ligament I would try conservative management but I would not with my large breed. If the dog was still young I would probably have surgery done (not necessarily TPLO) so that after the recovery period she would have an unrestricted activity level for her age and breed.

You will probably get more replies if you post this question in the health/nutrition forum. Palliative care is usually about caring for a terminally ill dog.

Thank God Dogs Doesn't Hold Grudges Because...

I've made plenty of mistakes, errors and misjudgements over time with my dogs and they're always eager to forgive and forget. I've never smacked any of my dogs though. No matter how mad I am about whatever misdemeanor they're guilty of I just couldn't bring myself to hit them. -
The brand of paw paw ointment is LUCAS.

Yes, paw paw ointment is perfectly safe to put on her nose. My Cavalier had some hyperkeratosis on his nose. I put paw paw ointment on it twice a day for 2 days the the problem resolved and has never returned.

Advice On Different Package To Desex Puppy
cavNrott replied to nicolatu's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've never been offered a package. I have baseline bloods done on young dogs so we can see how things are going down the track if anything crops up. We've not needed to do bloods again at desex time. I have bloods done on older dogs before any surgery if none have been taken in the previous 6 months. I ask for fluids and pain relief and for Isoflurane which is my vets usual choice of GA anyway. He knows if anything extra needs to be done to go ahead and do it without needing to phone and tell me. -
Most of the larger pet warehouses sell them. Not sure where you are in Melb. I buy mine in Malvern.

I voted that I've written to 1-10MP's. I exaggerated a bit as I am just doing the writing as we speak but they will be sent emails and hard copies. I'm in Victoria.
