Recurring Injury In Young Agility Dog
dragonwoman replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Do what Ray says. I have been seeing him with one dog or another for 25 years, including chronic backs and legs. My philosophy is better a short happy life than a long frustrated one and I've made that awful decision twice over the years. Maybe Fergus would enjoy something else, tracking is one option and obedience can be great, the challenge being for the trainer to put some meaning in it for the dog, not that easy to start with but when the dog learns to learn it accelerates!!! Good luck -
It is not against the law to breed dogs in Australia!!!!!
-
Perhaps put it in GSD breed section?

Can someone please advise dosage for 20+ kg bitch, I have 529mg capsules How long after starting would you expect a result? Thanks

My vet advised no joint supplements in a sound dog unless there is a specific joint problem I sometimes wonder about the future of our current young dogs with all the premium foods and supplements we feed, maybe it will come nback and bite us on the bottom!! Edited to addI omitted no joint supplements under 5 years of age according to vet

Dog aggression. Other examples can be managed, teenage dogs can be a pain though, can't blame them for trying anything, they need a leader Simply don't believe desexing is the panacea it's claimed to be behaviour wise

Your Choice If Only These Available?
dragonwoman replied to kja's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have a 14 year old doing well on Supercoat Light and Mature, previous dogs were fed this in maturity anad lived to 15 and 16 years respectively in a breed of normal lifespan of 12 to 14 years My younger dogs are fed a premium brand but I have seen no reason to change from Supercoat when the old guys do so well They have chicken wings, meaty bones, vegemite toast for brekkie and 2 x 1s too It might be rubbish but they reckon its good rubbish and so do I, all they need apparently -
Personally I would wait until 15 months or longer if you don't have a health or temperament problem What an enlightened vet!!

Or, like most raffle prizes, they get donated to some club or other or to a charity, dog food goes to a shelter...............

Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)
dragonwoman replied to ness's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
As a specialist once said to me many years ago, re post op BC, "trouble is you can go faster on three", so the trick is to encourage use of all four which I now know takes a while................and maybe a bit of ingenuity. In our case it involved strapping the good leg and forcing use of weak one on increasing walks Dog lived to 16 and retired on his 12th birthday................trust your experts and hang in there -
Hardly worth improving drainage if there is water running back on to the property is it? Whish it is at the moment because the district is inundated. But, yes, much has been spent, much more will be spent, drainage infrastructure at the Park is the best it can be until work continues in late spring but we have had exceptional rains, just check VicRoads site for road closures to see why KCC Park is closed for safety reasons

Just keep watching that site!!! -
Garbage bins, have used them for years, not even my dogs can chew through them!! Usually leave food in bag and just drop in, use cereal containers in house and just refill when empty

Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)
dragonwoman replied to ness's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have been through bone surgeries and cared for others' dogs over the years with BCs, you just have to harden your heart and follow drs orders, I think after a while they become sort of "institutionalised" and adapt to confinement very well. Have been surprised when hitherto very active dogs head straight back to their crates after toiletting. Trick is to be consistent. It is a very hard time for all Good luck -
Keep an eye on www.vicdog.com which is a free schedules website and nothing to do with DOGS Victoria. Some clubs are using this site instead of the Gazette to save money and because it is quicker. There are some Rally dates approved for later in the year, watch out for schedules on the website mentioned

Just curious. Why do people need rooms which allow dogs? My guys are quite happy sleeping in the car in their crates or in the dog float if we take that. We usually take some canine company along if it is only one dog we are entered with. Only time I have been happy to accept motel's offer to allow dog in with me was extremely hot weather, although there was plenty of natural shade and I could have put crates under trees, inside was better. Stayed in motel last Sat night with two youngsters out in car, not a peep.

Don't you get a choice of end for recall? Thankfully in Victoria it is usually handler's choice and most dogs benefit from moving away from post end where they have just done SFE, esp inexperienced dogs. I am aware that other states do almost everything from the post, including retrieves, whereas we start those further down the ring, just another local habit!! Work on your cues and the on/off switch between exercises, but sometimes boy brains have time delays!!! Victorians have to wait until June to try Advanced Rally, there are many getting ready :-)

Exactly. Dogs can have depth/height perception problems with eyesight Get a specialist checkup done Also have dog checked out physically by vet, etc who knows musculo/skeletal stuff. Some dogs rush things because they want to get them over with because they are actually stressed by them. Some people mistake this for enthusiasm, Have been there myself with a couple of my dogs over the years, and they were high achievers too

Take the advice!!! Pups trigger hormone which starts and sustains labour, one pup may not do it, as you have been advised It may be a large whelp as well and it may not come through delivery all that safely. Better a planned, safe conclusion than a midnight dash with awful outcome, I know which would stress my girls more. Might be different if you were only 15 minutes from vet. Vet knows due date and there will be more stress on you than the bitch. Although frozen semen can produce good sized litters, I think it is a calculated risk we take when using it. Been there, done that, elective caesar for one pup, but she is gorgeous!!! Good luck.

Exactly!!!!

Guess you will need to see what the fashion will be in longcoat presentation, the hair is there for a purpose, but probably enough is enough, hate hairy feet myself but some breeds require them I have trimmed feet of pet GSD longcoats in the past. Any Group 5 person who shows trimmed footed dogs eg Border Collies, Aussies should be able to help you and advise on scissors. You may need to tidy front and rear pasterns too, gently does it, degree of trimming depends on amount of hair, quality of feet and amount of bone and what illusion you want to present. Best to play around with puppy anyway so it gets used to trimming, even if you only pretend..................and a good fine metal comb will do wonders, feet shed too!!!

DOGS Victoria does prefix registrations for the whole of Australia on behalf of ANKC, so their check is for the whole of the country
