  1. I hope you won't leave this child alone in a room with any dog for at least the next 10 years!!
  2. State councils have to cover wages of staff who download data for member. What happened to access to ANKC database offered by NSW to its members that came and went very quickly a while back? Is it up again?
  3. I would do what I had to do some years back in a very similar situation, euthanasia is a blessing sometimes. To have kept my beloved friend alive any longer would have been for me and not for him, I have never regretted it. I still miss him very much, we achieved a lot together, but I have my beautiful memories forever
  4. Practice without the dog, all one smooth action, start luring but fade it quickly, the luring becomes the signal. Draw the dog forward at nose level, a drawn dog can't sit!! I suspect you are stopping to do the stand and that is where the sit opportunity is being taken. Stop on your right foot. You could always do groundwork on a box or table if the dog is small I think we should consider all positions are not taught as something static, think of it as bringing the dog into a sit, a stand or a down.............hope that makes sense but that is how we get perfect positions, straight and close in all of them.........dog learns quickly because if we do it right, he can't fail to please!!
  5. I have heard of ovarian tissue left behind, apparently a very small bit can cause things like making a speyed bitch attractive to dogs every six months, in that case the owners decided to live with it
  6. It can also be very irritating dermatitis and should be investigated
  7. Could I have the details of Melbourne seminar, please?
  8. Weaned on to adult dry and minced beef/chicken here, plus yoghurt, low lactose milk, etc
  9. The more you nag the worse it will get. Obviously he thinks it's OK and that he is doing what you want, a wire has become crossed somewhere, only needs to happen once sometimes. I have had similar with show dogs who think it is OK to "stack" themselves after I leave. In your case I would change command, assume you are using "stay", why not use "stand" and confirm that what you mean is don't move even if a bomb goes off by examining the dog yourself, be more pushy than a judge would be and if a foot moves, replace it with a quiet firm command. Only use the command before you leave and if you need to affirm it, I think constant "stay, stay, stay" becomes a threat to dogs and makes them think the exercise is something to worry about. If you need to reassure in between use a quiet "good" Hope this helps, and sometimes it's better to lose a point or two for a foot than the whole exercise with a fed up or anxious dog. ETA Should also have mentioned that I am assuming the dog is not sore anywhere
  10. You are biking a 5 month old puppy?
  11. Can anybody help with statistics showing where the "problem" dogs (the "too many dogs are bred" dogs)originated from? Are they products of 1. ANKC breeders 2. Purebred but unregistered breeders 3. Accidental/intentional matings of pet dogs 4. Designer dog breeders/puppy farms 5. Other? I am sure I have seen figures but not sure where to find in a hurry
  12. Carrying and whelping large litters does not help any girl's back, I would be getting her checked further. Perhaps the ortho was hoping it would be simple but needs a second look because obviously it wasn't, if you get my drift?
  13. Matter is covered in ANKC Regs, Part 6, Section 1, Clause 1.1 Animal File, basically you get a quote and pay upfront and info is emailed or put on CD, you pay $5.50 for CD. This version of the reg came in in 2010
  14. You teach what you want from the get go and reward when you get it and start adding a word. Front or anything else is not a word, it is a human noise which to the dog means a certain position or action. That's all they understand. If you are not getting any position you want, you re-teach and change your command.......eg. Heel seems to mean wander along in your approximate vicinity, you go back to basics, teach what you want and put a new word on it. I always remember someone who used Straight to mean three different things in training the Broad Jump...........they had a lesson in "Commands and what they mean to the dog 101" One confused dog!!
  15. Has not happened for several years because main importer stopped doing it Curious about Victorian purebred breeder allegedly exporting big numbers...............the number of export permits granted monthly by Dogs Victoria is quite small, often less than 10 a month.............of course these alleged purebred exports may not be ANKC registered dogs at all ................... They are simply leaving with or without a registered pedigree and not an export certificate. Only those registries in countries who have cut deals and are part of the FCI care about export certificates handed out via the ANKC and someone wanting a pet isnt interested anyway in whether the dog has been transferred to them on the Australian registry. AQIS dont require an ANKC export certificate issued by the ANKC to move a dog.If you think Vicdog breeders are only breeding ANKC registered dogs thats not true either. Many are Vicdogs members and dont own a registered dog and have never registered a litter - prime example is one very high profile commercial breeder who has been a Vicdogs members for over a decade and produces a constant supply of pet puppies purebred but not registered] and has never once registered a litter. Am aware of the issues but it is still legal to breed and/or export dogs in Australia. Think you misunderstood my intent but not to worry.
  16. Watch the chicken frames, know of two dogs who choked, only one survived...........
  17. Overweight can be related to slow descent of testes, is he big or fat?

  19. May be partly due to fact that deaf pups are not usually culled these days
  20. I would say she is very uncomfortable and doesn't know what to do about it - I have heard oxytocin can settle this but I used buscopan a few times recently with a bitch with severe discomfort, especially when feeding Ring your vet
  21. My observation over many years is that it is all to do with timing and understanding dog brains.........regardless of method.................have known people spend small fortunes on workshops and private lessons and they still don't have it..........others have innate ability and get it straight away..........they have the lucky dogs!!
  22. Only NSW as far as I am aware NSW journal was incorrect in stating it would be compulsory, it is only compulsory in shows run by sub committees of Dogs NSW
  23. You go girls!!!! You should not be surprised, you (and Mr TSD) have put in the hard yards. (Haven't a clue what it is you are talking about half the time but it sounds like fun and fulfilment lol)
