  1. The ACES test is a physical exam by a veterinary ophthalmologist which some breeds require and others recommend.......DNA tests are separate, at least they are with my guys.......... ETA my dogs have available DNA tests for eye disease and ACES at maturity, don't bother with ACES again until 8 years.........some breeds have issues which need examination at six weeks and yearly follow ups, some diseases are apparent early, others in later years, when it comes to eyes we have to follow latest best practice...........and sometimes we discover something no-one ever knew was there and all dogs get tested for that specifically by specialists from then on!!!
  2. "Inky, Pinky Pen and Inky" we used to chant................can you turn the Pen into Penny........................don't fancy either of your suggestions, definitely not Stinky, although...............some days............... LOL
  3. We don't get annual vac reminders, we get annual health check reminders!!
  4. If you have not already done so, I would see a repro vet, especially if you wish to breed down the track
  5. Yes, some dogs have been made very ill by high dose of fish oil without Vit E.....my dogs range 16 - 21 kg and they each get one 1000 mg capsule a day, plus Omega 3 6 9 and oily fish once or twice a week
  6. Why not think of the trial exercises as tricks too............."For our next trick......the recall!!" Blow everybody else, it's just you against the rule book!!
  7. This is all sound advice and it really should not matter which way you go if the dog can heel, Fig 8 is about the dog maintaining heel position at varying paces if you think about it
  8. You can sign a waiver..........I wouldn't use the ferry in warmer months.........and I would not leave a dog loose in a car anywhere
  9. I'm one of the people who hear these complaints - a couple a week and its my experience that the majority of people who want to take things further do so for reasons other than money. I am one of those who sees official complaints, and in most cases it would not have got that far if the breeder had shown an ounce of sympathy and concern..........the dismissive, don't want to know about it breeders are the ones the official complaints are made about IMHO
  10. : Sorry to go off topic but dragonwoman do you have a link to the bolded part? They can be found somewhere on the not so friendly Dogs Victoria website, hopefully I somewhere in the Obedience section LOL
  11. When judging, one also looks for consistency, if the disability is obvious, I would not stress over crooked sits if the dog sits roughly the same every halt, stand, drop, etc.........The Rules do allow for a judge to declare a dog unfit to compete so I would advise that the handler has a veterinary certificate stating the dog is OK to work, this can be produced if there are any questions asked. Many three legged dogs have successfully trialled across the disciplines, there used to be a tripod poodle in NSW years ago? Victoria has guidelines for disabled handlers for judges, handlers and clubs.......I think the same common sense approach would apply to dogs. If the dog is happy and handling the wo0rk, I would love to judge him, but he has to look like he really wants to be there!!!
  12. You need to ask the breeder. This is sent to them and they are supposed to forward it to you. In Qld pups can be registered in new owner's name from the start.............you should ask the breeder for the papers and in the meantime contact Dogs Queensland and ask if they can help, they will know if the breeder is a member, has a breeding prefix and has registered the litter..in Victoria a breeder has 28 days to supply papers, if they don't there is procedure to follow What you are after is a document headed Australian National Kennel Council Limited...Certified Pedigree.......anybody can create a pedigee, it is just a family tree........good luck
  13. I find posts very hard to follow..............and I do have tertiary English qualifications!!
  14. Yes - having had an all natural birth first time around, with normal contractions, compared to my 2nd, where I was given syntocinon, I will take the first option any day of the week thanks. Synthetic Oxytocin was the devil!!! Had retained placenta with child #2, effect of tablets given was the same, went into labour again every 4 hours LOL Long time ago but you never forget!!
  15. Thanks dragonwoman. I do love checking the vicdog schedules page everyday LOL. One of my favs I already have the ASCV WP trial schedule printed off and in my diary :) My bitch has been in training in wp for almost 12 months, but doubt she will be ready for this trial as she will have 10 week old puppies. Maybe June/July will be her month Drafting is an entirely different discipline http://ankc.org.au/media/4415/drafting_2016.pdf I should have read a bit more thoroughly! Suppose it is like any new sport, needs enthusiasts to push it and an affiliate to provide the umbrella and support for a fixture............
  16. Amstaff Club have 22 May for event, suggest you keep an eye on DV calendar in members section, public calendar is often way out of date..............though why we have to log on to look at a calendar is beyond me.......secret members business??? Edited - check www.vicdog.com for schedule/s
  17. Victorian shows are in Warrnambool this week....................suggest you check calendar on Dogs Victoria website
  18. Barry Haywood is a vet...Kevin Kelly was still at the pool last year?
  19. The enquirer will be sent an extremely polite, informative and positive response as is usual, that is why articles were sought in the OP to assist the person (which won't be me in this case) replying to the enquiry................BTW I don't spend hours on the phone/keyboard dealing with club puppy enquiries/behaviour issues/etc, etc for nothing either...............I do it for the dogs, they deserve it
  20. I fear there are also puppy farmers in every breed who sell everything on main register and see nothing wrong in helping others to breed like they do :-( They definitely would not get one from me, even on limited register, I don't believe in juvenile desexing and would not trust them with an entire animal
  21. In 30 years of owning entire bitches, most of that time in suburbia, I have never had that happen
  22. Could I have some links to articles to use to explain the pitfalls to what sounds like an absolute twit enquiring about breeding a puppy they haven't even got yet.........how much they will have to pay for stud fee seems a priority!!!
  23. And, as a certain, very literal, dog taught me, change your command, "sit" might have bad vibes, words are just noises to dogs, you might find a new word along with techniques suggested here, works............you could even train to a signal (usually develops from luring action) and bring the verbal in later
  24. 'hm, I thought the name refers to the German word for moustache which is 'Schnurbart' or 'Schnauzbart' or 'Schnauzer' because of the dog's distinctively bearded snout?... That is probably why "schnauzer" was called "Schnauzer", he had one!!
