  1. Shows Sun and Mon of Cup Weekend are actually at Goonawarra Reserve, Rolling Meadows off Lancefield Rd Sunbury. Sunday is Working Dogs only but most exhibitors come for the weekend, Mon is Vic Womens All Breeds Ch Show And Tuesday is the Cup Day show at Sunbury, biggest single show in Vic I believe, held at Rec Reserve Riddell Rd Sunbury Should be some Corgis there although not many seem to be bred these days
  2. ...that makes an interesting point: your dog was exactly bred for this, so why wouldn't it be fair to allow such breeds to do what they are bred for a few times in the year, although they don't do it as a job all year? wrt aversives: we used pool noodles for teaching the dogs not to nip or launch uncontrolled attacks - for me this is the same level of aversives as using the leash to hold the dog back. We used of course also the leash, however, the utilisation of the leash is limited here as you have to let the dog go at a certain point, you just can't follow your dog fast enough. The pool noodle also becomes the visual sign to block the dog's path, change direction etc.... My brain is still going nuts to understand the difference between 'normal' training (obedience, agility) and herding and what's going on the dog's brain. The 'normal' training's task is to teach the dog how to control all the drives and instincts - the herding is about revealing and unleashing this specific instinct these herding breeds have been bred for (rules applied). That's a fascinating new world of training. The whole system, the whole training wouldn't work and wouldn't be possible without this one specific trait. You can do agility with e.g. a ridgeback, but you can't do herding with a ridgeback - it would be like trying to teach an emu to fly. The aversives are minimal compared to the rewards / positive reinforcements given to the dogs. Sometimes I use seagulls as 'life bait', allowing my dog ('take it') to chase them when we walk at the beach. The seagulls become a very high valued reward - as a result I can call my dog back from chasing them, because in her mindset she has now this reflex that if she is obedience she will get another go - she works for the reward. I assume the herding is something similar - there is no other reward (treat, praise, seagulls, whatsoever) that could compare with letting her follow their own instinct regarding sheep. Willem, you have summed it up beautifully, the old saying is that the dog's work is his reward. Herding is very confronting to a newcomer, you feel so out of control and right out of the comfort zone, so does the dog, suddenly it has a whole lot of new questions, the main one for some is "Am I allowed to do what my ancestors are telling me to do?" I recall my mind blowing at the sight of the meeting of minds of dog and sheep, I was not required!!! Mine usually go wild (you can control that later) and show great enthusiasm, then you bring in your rules, they go on strike, they find out what is allowed, they do get sheep after all if they comply, it's not so bad, you start working together. Aversives? A plastic grass rake to block passage or to bang on the ground for emphasis is all....being taken off the sheep is a big punishment. Suppose it depends on the trainer and on the observers understanding what is going on in the yard
  3. Have known of several dogs trained to carry something in certain situations as it keeps their mouths off other things, like the nearest dog!!
  4. Not sure what you mean by verify, do you suspect parentage or purity? Nobody is a member of the ANKC, its members are the state canine controls, but purebred registered dogs in Australia are registered via their state body on the ANKC database...............Dogs Qld members have access to this database..........you could get a DQ member to search for the pedigree If you suspect parentage, you collect all info you can and submit in writing to DQ in the first instance..........
  5. Where do you get yours? I had a look online today (admittedly quick & lazy) but couldn't see a really obvious place online Vet Products Direct.......my injury vet recommended it, I believe it is better than all the other joint formulas.............cheaper to buy in bulk though if you can get a syndicate going
  6. That's rubbish, my dogs have all their regular meals and are highly titled in several disciplines, including Tracking.............I knew of a small dog which nearly died on a long track because some halfwit had advised the owner not to feed her the night before........
  7. There are lies, damn lies and statistics............and creative fudging
  8. Curious as to what greyhound owners fed pre-kibble? I know bread and milk was popular; and baked rusk thingies - but what else? I'm talking 70 years ago! Yes, bread and milk, broken biscuits from Arnotts, etc by the chaff bagful - sweet and dry - sheeps heads cooked in the old copper in the shed.........and there WAS early kibble, oven dried bread or similar mix, guess that has been around for years. I read that it was the Vietnam war which caused the development of premium dry food, the dogs could not fit in enough other diet to sustain their work in the humid climate so super-enriched dry was developed, most of our dogs don't do enough to need this over enrichment, mine do well on middle of the road dry with a bit of raw thrown in

  10. Just scrolled back up and saw this - that is a really cool idea!!! Can't see the relevance to dog breeding myself.............smacks of voyeurism anyway, can't acgirl have some peace and dignity......what would it prove?
  11. I think entire dogs believe desexed dogs are like a third sex and not quite right...........comes from years of observation........I always maintained if desexing worked we could empty the jails LOL It is not a miracle cure for aggression, a lot of a dog's temperament is influenced in utero by hormones and what we do with them greatly influences the rest
  12. We have had that law in Victoria for several years but the pet owners and the BYB don't even know half the diseases exist. Last few cases of serious one in my breed have been interstate pet owners breeding unregistered or limited register dogs.....ANKC breeders generally test but our breed does not have LRLs as yet
  13. Much better if run under the umbrella of a DV affiliate, could be at Bulla or KCC Park if you can get a booking, but can be run anywhere by an affiliate...........councils will want to see the club's insurance certificate which all DV affiliates get each year
  14. Isn't that simply the use by date of the vaccine...nothing to do with how long it is effective once injected, it is the dog's immune system which looks after that, surely?
  15. Especially a minority breed easily identified........it has occurred to me since my first post that maybe if the OP asked many thoughtful questions in their search, a breeder might be excused f or assuming they also knew about different re4gisteries?
  16. All perfectly normal, I believe in Qld and maybe WA puppies can be registered direct to new owners but in other states the breeder does it in their name...........this registration is only to put the puppy on the ANKC database of purebred dogs.....thousands of puppies would still be in their breeders names because pet owners never transferred them..............but that is only ownership of the dog for ANKC purposes, the dog is yours. In Victoria a pet can be transferred into a pet owners name without them having to join Dogs Victoria, each state is different The date of registration is the date the paperwork was processed in the office, it may have been submitted by the breeder weeks before, due to microchip laws, the earliest puppies registrations would be submitted in Victoria is 6 weeks as they are usually chipped at vaccination, plus some breeders now wait a little longer to vaccinate This breeder IMHO has done everything right, you should have maybe done some more homework on what "registration" meant and who with, I believe the breeder assumed you had!!
  17. Documents can be found on DV website in Members area under Affiliates Forms.............Dog Incidents Owner of suspended dog is advised of procedure both at enquiry and by letter Assessment (fee payable) is done by a panel of three persons selected by whatever discipline offence occurred in, under similar circumstances to when offence occurred All states have some sort of assessment before reinstating dogs........notice of suspension is required to go on ANKC website and all states recognise each other ie. suspended dog is suspended nationally and virtually does not exist until reinstated. DV have a different approach, we refer to dog incidents and have levels of offence, we penalise unruly behaviour which is meant to be a wake-up call to owners that they need to think about their management. Tt works and saves potential worse behaviour in a positive helpful way. Previously a dog was aggressive or not and nothing could be done about the disruptive ones or their thoughtless owners The system is currently under review, some tweaking going on :-)
  18. Only way we could fix an episode at the beach after many minutes of trying (nice fluffy herding dogs!!) was to carry both into the water and immerse the offender's head until he let go.......shit of a dog and the temperament of the pup he attacked was shot forever :-( Many years ago ..................
  19. It is government legislation and I don't believe it will ever be overturned, seems there is plenty of "underground" activity anyway for those who care to look for it............I am in no way involved BTW.. I don't think it is actually "legal" in other states, it just isn't illegal?
  20. Not strange at all.........it could also be nerve pain or arthritis
  21. Not against the law in Victoria (farming lobby) and I understand quite the most humane way if done properly, I would rather be shot if I didn't know it was coming than be given a green needle which always must be traumatic to a sentient animal...no matter how tastefully it is handled
  22. Donning my flame suit but I can't understand why some people feel their dogs have to go everywhere, sorry, love my dogs but I don't inflict them on others in public places and I don't patronise places full of dogs ETA I have seen too many dogs exposed to situations they were not happy in by an owner indulging themselves........some dogs, like some humans, don't do public places well, why should all dogs be "socialised" to a situation they will never enjoy?
