How To Correct A "delicate" Dog?
sas replied to lovemesideways's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks Sas, yes very proud of my little beag Her enthusiasm is awesome! Do you see many Danes with that speediness/drive? Yes and No. They are more than capable of it, sadly some people use the breed name as an excuse for slow lazy behaviour, they were bred for their drive as they needed it to do the jobs required of them. Some are completely void of obvious drive though LOL -

Wow Sas she's awesome! Fastest Dane I've ever seen!! Yeah she's a nut bag, that was the only type of training we could get her to respond to and although I don't train her anymore, her previous drive training comes right back when I try it with her. -

I'm not AD, but for me a dog who is happy, positive and drivey is working with serious enthusiasm. Tail up and wagging, eyes bright, excited, focused, responds to commands sharply and quickly. This is Daisy working at her drive-iest; She actually missed a few commands because I revved her up a bit too much, but that is easily fixed. What a lovely girl, I bet you're super proud of her. -

Me neither......you just need a Dane to teach you that there's no point trying to force a dog to do something....try and force a Dane to drop Realisticaly if they don't do a command I have trained them in then I'm led to believe A) They don't fully understand the command B) The command isn't proofed yet in different environments C) My command wasn't clear enough D) The dog doesn't have enough drive to do it This is an old video, it's of my then 7 year old Dane who is drivey: She's very different to my boy who need high rewards and constant feedback. -
You might muzzle the dog, it would depend on the dog/handler combination and what you were trying to achieve. If you are using food a muzzle will slow you down. Most dogs will not lunge on a head collar at all, and of those that do the majority learn very quickly that it is fruitless so long as the owner doesn't do anything to encourage it (like reinforce it by trying to "calm the dog down" or worse, removing the head collar). I've had one fear aggressive Dane perfectly hand-able on a head halter and another one that twisted and turned to try and get behind me if they saw a dog and was a right prat but you can control the lunge factor. For the later we did intensive training and just use a check these days....all dogs are different... I'm all for whatever works....whatever gives the handler control and confidence....because with a fear agro one you need confidence otherwise you're not going to get very far.

Doggy Beach/park/areas In Or Near The Rooty Hill Area
sas replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
I know, but there could be some kind of park/lakey style are nearby! Or if a beach is within half hour drive? Something like that, Im hopeful!! I've had a look on google maps, but need to find somewhere Im allowed to bring a dog so thought people might have some opinions I just edited my post to show a fairly big looking reserve. Na no beaches half an hour drive either, it's very in-land. Some locals might be able to tell you about a creek for forestry or something like that. Maybe check the Council website for off leash areas too Hope you have a great day! -

Sorry hun, Rooty Hill is not near the beach. If you go to google maps and type in Rooty Hill, you'll be able to see the area and what's around it (A) marks where Rooty Hill is... Also, I've included the a Sat. view to look at parks -
People Who Work Fulltime And Have A Puppy.
sas replied to Whipitgood's topic in General Dog Discussion
I took 2 weeks off work to settle pup in and everyday I would put him in the dog run he would be whilst I was at work. I'd feed him in there, play with him there etc so he got used to it and saw it as a fun place, he'd be in there a minimum 2 hours per day if I were home as a build up. He'd have chew toys in there etc. Pups sleep ALOT so it's not like they're running aorund 8 hours a day trying to find something to do -
Exactly. Robert only likes Prozac actually and not Colicalm as apparantly the aggression can increase on it, it doesn't for us though and had great results.

Catjar, seriously, I would forget behaviourists, vets and drugs until you can hire a good K9 experienced trainer to assess the dog first. Someone experienced with working breeds and GSD's in particular, what state are you in???. If the dog is fear aggressive and from a registered breeder, I would be asking the breeder why they are breeding dogs of weak nerve.

Never had heard of them before so had a look, interesting concept, I'm glad it helped you and your dog. You didn't use it as the only collar though right as I'm not sure I would trust an agro dog on it. This are the ones I found when I went searching: http://www.bowhouse.com.au/p/1026581/good-...dog-collar.html http://www.calmingcollars.com/

I consulted with Robert Holmes on both cases, he is a Vet Behaviourist, you may like to do the same as he does do phone consults as well. http://animalbehaviour.com/

Yep, 2 experiences. 1) Great Dane - 18 months old - came to us with Fear Aggression - Prozac & Behaviour Modification. Prozac made him worse and he really lost the plot and was pts 2) Great Dane - Onset at 16 months - Aggression, Anxiety based - Colicalm & behaviour Modification - Completely different dog in a positive way, we still work at it though, it's not a cure but much more managable and a much happier dog. From what I can tell from talking to different people is that it's such an individual thing, you really don't know how it's going to turn out. Obviously without the Behaviour modification it's not going to work. Does your Behaviourist feel that medication is really needed?

How Many People Should Be In Charge Of 'training' A Pup?
sas replied to goldee's topic in Puppy Chat
I think everyone who lives in the house be involved in training the dog, however I believe that the family should sit down and actually write down what the command words will be, what the hand signals will be, what they will do if the dog doesn't do it etc. Even if you choose just one person to train the pup other people in the household are still going to be inconsistent when interacting if the rules aren't put down. If your family is conflicting about puppy training - call a meeting. -
Worst Excuses For Re-homing Or Surrendering A Pet
sas replied to PeiPei's topic in General Dog Discussion
I say don't flatter yourself Dogs are remarkable in these situations. Most of the people who surrender their dogs to me get so worried of how the dog will cope without them, they seriously think the dog may have some kind of breakdown....they leave and the dog is fine and many of those behavioural problems also dissapear as they drive away -
Worst Excuses For Re-homing Or Surrendering A Pet
sas replied to PeiPei's topic in General Dog Discussion
The last 3 Rescues I've been involved with are all baby orientated but the thing is I don't think badly of any of those people, they rehomed their dogs to put their dogs in better situations. No one who calls me is a bad owner....they've searched to find a Breed Specific Rescue and made the effort to call me and not dump their dog. There are lot of rescue folk who are over emotional about the re-home process when infact most dogs re-home fine and can go through the re-home process once, twice, three times and still be ok. It's not ideal obviously, we'd like to see them in one home but that's not always realistic and not always what is best for the dog. -
So pleased they have found most of them! I hope #8 is ok!

Yeah you don't have an idea Domestication has done many things to many breeds, let's not get into the flat faced breeds and any other breed that wouldn't be able to survive by itself in the wild . Many Dane owners bring up their Danes on Raw, it's just not advisable unless you actually know what you're doing, mind you people who don't know what they're doing do it too LOL Now nature may very well have intended raw for our wild friends, however our dogs have been domesticated for a very long time and you only have to look at what evolution has done to the digestion process of dogs now compared to dogs then. I put the article out there for opinion, I don't neccessarily back it, although I feel it brings up some interesting points.

Oh sas, why do you so often want to put a downer on things. Let me give you a few :D ;) How's it a downer? I don't see how it's a big deal....why don't you educate me as to why it is and then I would have learned something as I thought they were allowed everywhere. Okay, looks like the hugs didn't work. I have explained why it made me happy to see it and others have posted that Guide Dogs are allowed everywhere. Just because it is legislated that Assistance Dogs have to be allowed everywhere doesn't mean that all establishments welcome them with open arms and food bowls. There has been quite a bit in the news of late about taxi drivers refusing to take Guide Dogs. Can someone please post something that will restore the pleasure I was feeling when I started this thread ;) Maybe you need one of those famous hugs

You may like to contact Stormie, she was getting it from a compounding chemist for much cheaper.
