  1. I did see it but the price was HUGE so I decided against it.....have you?
  2. You can't ask the dog questions unfortunately to be able to get to the root of it, we have very limited resources on how to deal with mental illness in canines.
  3. Hi Guys, Can anyone please reccomend someone in the Coffs area that can help a dog with a muscular problem. Thanks
  4. What you're looking for is an obedience club: http://www.easternsuburbsdogtraining.org.au/ I personaly drive an hour out to Luci Ellem once a week in Austral: http://www.camarna.com/obedience.htm Depending on what you want and how you want to train your dog is going to depend on the club you go to
  5. And one of them has been made by you. Read the posts SaS. Those colour breeders 'being dissed' are those who are NOT doing the breed justice. I have not seen a post that suggests all Chocolate Labs are shite and all those breeding them are dodgy. What this has to do with merle Danes I don't know but I'd not make the same suggestion there either. However from your responses to my posts here and in another thread yesterday, it seems you've concluded that I've insulted you or your dog. This is what I have said in this thread. Please show me how it even vaguely suggests that I think all breeders of chocolate Labs (and to draw the analogy, merle Great Danes) are dodgy: Oh dear lord! What you just quoted wasn't even addressed to you, it was a general comment to those who thought it appropriate to dis people who prefer to breed Chocolates. Read what you typed initially, maybe you didn't mean for it to be interpreted the way it was. I certainly would be wary of a breeder with that colour in their prefix. That wasn't fair, because you're suggesting people should stay about from all those Breeders, you can't say all those breeders who that colour in their prefix are all dodgy and people should be wary of them. Who said anything about merle great danes? Insulted my dog? What are you talking about!? LOL I seriously don't get your posts.
  6. Sas, perhaps being involved with the breed would give you a clearer insight into the issues. I would suspect that there are far more breeders out there breeding chocolate labs for their colour than there are breeding them for their quality. If you know the show scene and look through the lists of breeders it becomes clear that a lot of breeders that fit into this category do not show their dogs (nor does anybody else). There are a handful of fine breeders who breed chocolates and are doing a wonderful job of improving the standard of them in Australia. Miss Monaro is one of them and so are many of the other breeders who have been mentioned in this thread. Unfortunately for every "good" breeder there are many out there who are mating two chocolate dogs with no real regard for breed type. I guess that does generate an attitude within people who associate with the breed but at this stage I believe that those who are doing the right thing by the colour are proving themselves enormously, particularly in recent years. Thanks, Labs were my breed before Danes....for 20 years
  7. Sorry to hear you're having a hard time but it is fairly normal. Lot's of people find when they start to put their dogs in their place by way of NILIF and things like that, that the dog may rebel....it's at this point that you have to hold it together and stand firm and put your foot down. For instance if you told the dog to go to their bed and they didn't, well you go and put the dog on its bed and if it gets up, you go back and put it there again until you release the dog from that command. 100% consistency will really help you through this. Also, you really have to be calm about this, as soon as your dog realises it has frustrated you it knows how to push your buttons.....just like a real life teenager. In regards to the food and training, just like Aidan said...you gotta fade the lure over time if that's how you taught the dog... I'm in the frame of mind now that I love it when my dog challenges me because it gives me the opportunity to show the dog who I am and what I want....I love his challenges and he does them daily...it's just his temperament....in the early days though I found it very soul distroying.
  8. His diet sounds all over the place and he's getting a lot of junk food. I'd start with putting the dog on a balanced high quality diet whether that be BARF or Kibble, give it 8 weeks and then go from there. Some dogs are just grass eaters and it's not fair to scold the dog for doing something that is very natural to them.
  9. One of our dogs did a course of Clomicalm for 2 months (I think it was 2 months) whilst we did Behaviour modification, he was then put on St Johns Wort for about 4 months and then weaned off that and is doing great, we still do alot of behaviour modification work but the Clomicalm pretty much rewired him... I've had a dog on Prozac about 5 years ago, and was prescribed by Robert Holmes and behaviour modification was also done, the Prozac made the dog worse and eventually was pts.
  10. I just put it in a bit of devon or chuck them down their throat....whether they like it or not.
  11. Unfortunately she is allergic to the Proplan sensitive as well as the salmon and rice one The dermatologist we see is fantastic - she has just got back from the US where all these papers were presented - one on the use of EPO and the fact that it is not being prescribed in high enough doses - so for Broad Beans who is a little overweight at the moment at 16.8kg they are recommended 3-5 tablets per day. I have settled on 4 and she will be reviewed again in 6 months. What dossage rate per kg is your Derm prescribing for EPO?
  12. We are currently on an elimination diet fo Goat and Mashed potato,bMegaderm Oil and Mineral tablets . He seems to be doing pretty well on it....shouldn't jinx myself! We stay away from Kibble now, we've tried all sorts and just haven't had any success.
  13. I find the dogs lick Paw Paw off, I use Unvita cream and check for ingrown hairs. If the dog beds down on hard surfaces on its' own accord then there's not much you can do unless you get elbow protectors if the dog is suffering because of it or the visual aspect is important. http://www.dogleggs.com/
  14. No.....they're discussing Chocolate Labradors... I think what PF meant is that the current situation with Choc Labs is relevant to the issue of partis in poodles in the sense that if they were allowed, the poodle breed would face similar issues of breeders breeding for colour rather than quality. Parti Poodles are irrelevant, they're not an accepted colour therefore completely OT in this discussion. I'm sick of hearing people dis Breeders who bred dogs of colours that are highly sort after, in this case it's chocolate, a colour that is accepted in the ring so therefore included in the breed standard and there are plenty of Breeders who do this colour justice. I own of dog which is a highly sort after colour that plenty of shonkly breeders bred but there are many of wonderful breeders of this colour as well. What really got my goat was how right at the begining of this thread Chocolate Breeders were dissed and that wasn't fair...some people don't think they did dis them but they clearly did and it made them look terribly uneducated. I don't see anything wrong with a Breeder who has a preference for Chocolates and wishes to breed them, as long as they are doing the breed justice, what is the problem? Too many assumptions made in this thread....l
  15. Dangerous advice in my opinion considering the 'trainer' probably doesn't understand the reason why the dog is displaying that behaviour. Your friend would be much better off having a session with a qualified Behaviourist,
  16. No.....they're discussing Chocolate Labradors...
  17. Why so defensive? It's irrelevant what the original post was anyway, the dog has HD, no one will ever know how it got it, both the parents were hip scored then at least the breeder was doing the right thing to start with, one would hope the breeder would give you some support and advice upon finding out though?
  18. SP, many poodle (and GSD) people will tell you that the two breeds don't mix well. I think the very great differences in their body languages don't help. Can you explain the differences of body language in more detail of both the breeds as to why they are different to standard caniine body language?
  19. Certainly Choc Labs, which are neither rare or unusual! No one here said there were rare or unusual.
  20. Yep, there are. They usually breed for characteristics other than colour too. I don't get your comments, I really don't....of course a 'good' breeder would be breeding for characteristics not just colour....you've pretty much stated that anyone who breeds Chocolates is shonky which is not the case.
  21. Certainly Choc Labs, which are neither rare or unusual! I certainly would be wary of a breeder with that colour in their prefix. It's is an acceptable colour therefore it's not unethical to breed. How about actually providing the OP with some reccomendations of good breeders who breed this colour instead of dissing all Breeders who breed this colour.
  22. I'm sure there are great breeders out there that breed Chocolate Labs. I'd say it's a bit like Harlequin Great Danes, there are a bunch of shonky ones breeding the colour because people pay more for it but there are also some great dedicated Harlequin breeders.
  23. Wow, would they be a record?? I don't know much about Gt Danes but I would think that the 'general' rule of larger breed, shorter life span applies and so 19 would be a huge milestone wouldn't it? I don't where Zoe was from, although Hildaydane Great Danes recently had 2 White bitches go to 20 and they were in pet homes. Hilde from Hilydane Great Danes has been breeding for about 40 odd years and she believes longevity is in the lines. These days we're lucky to dodge Bloat and Cancer and have our Danes make it to double digits.
  24. If it were me I'd be ignoring the dog (no eye contact, no verbal, no touch) and just giving it food and water untill it starts to de-stress and then go ahead with NILIF and Jan Fennel methods.
