  1. Just go back to basics with your toilet training If you think your puppy is testing boundaries then make sure you are applying NILIF 100%.
  2. My friends Labrador who is goodness like 14 I think had an amputation last year and is doing awesome
  3. Only if the resident dogs were not vaccinated and wormed regularily.
  4. Na, I don't do Bday parties for dogs. A Party Pack sounds good for people who like to do those kinds of things.
  5. A dog has to be a certain age before you know whether or not it can "head cleanly and properly" so presumably they are talking about young pups that are at least several months old. If they're not keeping or distributing culls, they must be terminating them. Some breeders will sell dogs that are unsuitable for work (but are otherwise healthy) as pets but it would seem that this is a practice that isn't really approved of and termination would be far more common. It seems a shame that that so many otherwise beautiful, healthy and lovable dogs die this way but this is the selection process for many working dogs ... I would hope that they use humane and relatively painless methods to terminate the dogs but no one really monitors these things ... I don't know....they're not adding to the population of working dogs in inexperienced hands or undesexed dogs adding to the population later one..... I don't have a problem with Breeders culling as long as done in a humane manner.
  6. What? I was simply disappointed that MEH's suggestion of a stripping demo was removed. I thought it was a good suggestion, especially because I have a traditionally stripped breed. Wrong thread http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=218353 :D oh thanks meg. I knew I saw the stripping suggestion somewhere. It takes on a whole different meaning now :D
  7. I went to the Lane Cove (Sydney) event yesterday and I hate to be negative about dog events but it was crap, it was nice to see the Greyhound group there though! There were hardly any stalls and and what was in them wasn't that interesting, mainly small dog clothing. I would want plenty of stalls to browse through and products for all breeds, I hope to see products I haven't seen before in shops.
  8. Yeah I was confused about that also!
  9. If your dog has had ANY skin condition they will not be covered for any skin condition in the future no matter if it has anything to do with the original condition or not, I dare say the same would go for the eye and ear. Reconsider after a year? Nope not unless it's in the insurance policy and I haven't come across on that is. GE is a line of credit that you make monthly repayments on and you're not able to use it everywhere, only in 10,000 places Australia wide, you can go here to see if your Vet uses it: http://www.interestfree.com.au/ge_creditli..._locations.html Be careful of 'interest free' options, nothing is interest free completely because the bank/organisation would make no money off it, it usually has an interest free period and if you do not pay in full by the end of the period you're looking at very high interest rates. The best thing you could do is call around the different insurance companies, there aren't a huge amount that offer pet inusrance so it shouldn't be a lengthy exercise and that way you can find out exactly what you need to know.
  10. That only traps the heat...get a proper cool coat/mat. Keep in mind, many dogs won't willingly lay on a wet item. Cooling mat: http://www.coolweave.com.au/k9_cooling_mats.htm

  12. I'd first reccomend you contact the trainer and clarify the affection bit, because if she doesn't want you to give any affection for 2 weeks then you're not going to be able to do it, you're a humaniser so there's no way you're not going to be able to give any affection for 2 weeks. There's no valid reason to ignore for 2 weeks anyhow. Ignoring is a great tool when used correctly, it can take the pressure off stressed dogs - Jan Fennels methods include the ignore, however they are based on 24 hour periods and after each 24 hour period you give the dog the option of obiding and if they don't then they go on another 24 hour ignore. If it's NILIF that she means then that's great, give all the love attention you want on YOUR terms i.e. call the dog to you, ask it to do something and give love and attention, DONT walk past the dog and give it a free pat or the head or treat for doing nothing. Tethering....nothing wrong with teaching your dog to relax on a tether, could even be handly in the future. Tethering is used as part of K9 Pro's TOT program, I'd actually reccomend you do that program because I think it would be really beneficial to your family and your dogs. I doubt your dog will be 'relaxed' initially. And never tether your dog when you can't see them, stressed dogs can get tangled and seriously hurt, there is a method to tethering at the right height etc. I wish you all the best of luck and I know right now everything seems too hard and emotional but you will get there....I'm not sure a Franchise with one method fits all training is the way to go personaly.
  13. Is he on his own outside? Dogs are pack animals.....perhaps he's lonely...I'd be howling too if I was on my own outside all day long Just want to mention that I used to have one dog, many many years ago. Did not give it any thought. One day hubby thought of getting another dog, so they could keep each other company. Well, it gave our dog a new wonderful life, I'd never seen him happier and I would never ever have a single dog again, not unless it could be with me all day. But I also want to say, I am not having a go at you for having an outside single dog. Alot of people do....just food for thought, cos its true, it is possible he could be lonely. Single dogs do just fine on their own if treated appropriately i.e. like dogs. Dogs sleep a great portion of the time we are out anyway. Think about 'enrichment' and what you can do iin your yard to occupy him when he's awake.
  14. It's not uncommon. Some different training methods can help you bond and sometimes time can help but sometimes there is no bond. Some say it is more fair to the dog to find a home for it where it does bond with the family. Does the dog have any behavioural problems that contribute towards you not bonding?
  15. No judgement here...how come you decided to do it a 2nd time?
  16. See thats what im worried about if i get a pup i want people to make sure he sits before they pat him but there are some people i know in my family who think its "cute" when they are little but then get annoyed when he is grown thats what it was like with my cattle dog so it would be tough for me to break that haha but i will just get angry if people dont listen to me i'll be like hey! its my puppy and i dont want him to do that!!!!. Then put the dog away if people can't play by your rules....better that way than her rehersing incorrect behaviours.
  17. I find that hard to swallow given the problems you have had from day 1.
  18. Dumb question... how do you teach hold separately, without teaching a take? Asked by a newbie in ignorance. Was wondering the same thing... From memory it was just about sitting with your dog casually and placing in its mouth, prasie etc. I haven't done it that way so not sure of the details.
  19. Old fashioned saying......perhaps you need to quizz your partner on what he actually means by the taste of blood because his theory as it stands means the dog is now a killer and will kill anything to get the taste of blood.
