  1. Dante had it for about 3 months last year and the skin took a long time to come good, actually in some areas it's still not great but he doesn't have Mange anymore. Dante is on Cortisone and any increased Cortisone use could potentially have us facing Mange again so it's a pretty stressful time when his allergies are really bad and aren't responding to anythign else. 10 months is a very long time to have Mange, I presume the immune system was a bit crap and therefore it could be more likely to return in the future?
  2. Or not...considering the number of people here who have already stated it didn't work for them.
  3. We use Cubby Houses for Danes who prefer sleeping outside. Or if you can have them inside in a crate that could work too.
  4. It shouldn't matter as the lead has to be loose.
  5. Hi Guys, I have been contacted by a lady reluctanly wanting to surrender her Great Dane due to Seperation Anxiety she can not manage. The dog is not yet 2 and was fine up until recently where it's companion (dog) moved out. The dog has always been an outside dog and doesn't actually like coming inside, if she brings the dog inside it will just want to go outside. She says when she brings the dog in, it will search through the rooms presumely looking for the other dog and then gets stressed and wants to go back out. I haven't experienced Seperation Aniexty before that can't be corrected by the Human making some changes i.e. the Human really being the one who caused the behaviour to start with. Have you heard of this sort of Aniexty before that seems to be caused by another dog leaving? The owner has been working with a Trainer, Behaviourist and Vet, all of whom haven't any luck. The Lady cannot take on another dog as company to this dog. The dog cries, howls, barks, throws itself at the windows/doors even when she is home so I can't really put the dog into suburban foster care due to this issue, I would most likely have to send it to a friend who is a behaviourist and has kennels and ask him to work with the dog which will be pretty costly. The dog is also now playing up on walks where as it didn't before. 3 walks a night is not helping either. A bark collar has been put on the dog and it will carry on through that as well, which I would expect of a dog with anxiety. She has taken the Dane for play visits with its previous house mate and other dogs but when returning home the behaviour is worse. I am yet to see the situation myself to see if everything is as the owner says it is. Any thoughts or suggestions?
  6. Hi Everyone, A general question for Breeders as to whether you would use a service like this... I have a friend whose looking at starting a whelping service where she would take on one bitch at a time for Breeders who for whatever reason cannot whelp the bitch at their place i.e. another litter at the same time, lack of resources, lack of experience, can't get the time off work etc. The Whelper is an experienced Vet Nurse and also a Registered Breeder themselves. Some notes: 1) Bitch would be whelped in the home and the puppies raised inside. 2) Large grassed run area available for the bitch prior to whelp and as an exercise/day pen for the bitch and pups later on. 3) Bitch and pups would go back to Breeder when the pups are around 4 weeks of age (or as discussed with the Breeder). 4) Bitch would have to have to be up to date with all their Needles or Titre test. 5) Fee for service would most likely be 10% of the puppies selling price per pup. As I'm not the person looking at running the service myself I can't really answer ad hock questions about it but what would your general feeling be about a service such as that?
  7. Can I suggest that you don't use a command to your dog when you know it's not going to oblige as you're just reinforcing the dog to ignore your commands. Although I'm not a fan of head halters, may I suggest the Susan Garret head halter method so you're directing the dogs attention back to you and you become the most re-inforcing thing the dog has.
  8. There's your problem....you've tried too many things, you're not being consistant. Choose one method and stick to it. I reccomend you buy the Crate Games DVD, you'll probably have the majority of the problems licked within a week. How often is the pup in the crate during the day? Could this be your pup letting you know it needs some mental/physical stimulation?
  9. I really wouldn't be concerned about a dog eating its own poo or dogs it lives with, you'll want to be concered about the dog eating stools outside of your property due to disease and worming issues. Dogs start and stop this behaviour through their lives and the less attention you give the more likely it is to fade on its own. It's a natural/normal behaviour for dogs. If it really does disturb you, you can try a product such as FOR - BID which you can find part way down the page here
  10. Although it doesn't sit well with our emotions our Vets need to be trained...
  11. Really? The service in Australia is friendlier and better than in any other country hubby and I have been to. Our experience is that Aussies complain a lot more than other places too. But I agree, definitely write a complaint. I would. I didn't say Australian service was bad, I said Australian's for some reason do not make complaints....well not to the right people....to each other but not to the company.
  12. Write a letter of complain to the Vet Clinic. Australian's for some reason are known for not making complaints and therefore the service does not improve - doesn't have to be a rude or nasty letter, could just be a heads up.
  13. You don't have to use a clicker to shape. You've already made your mind up so doesn't matter....

  15. I have a small dog. Available Tuesday. Frequently sent to the naughty corner. Walks nicely on lead...but would probably jump on the head of a person lying on the ground so I cant help Goodluck with it. I'm sure you'll find someone. I'm sure many would!
  16. Hi Guys, Do you have a small dog that can do the following: Needs to be available Tuesday. Sit in a corner by itself then walk to a person laying on the ground and then drop and then walk off on lead with a person. If you have a dog that can do that, please e-mail me [email protected] with your dogs photo so I can't pass it on. The above is the only information I have at the moment.
  17. ummmm....DOL is pretty much an Australian forum.....???
  18. Why not? The behaviours learned through shaping are much more reliable that luring.
  19. That's a pretty scary inccident to happen and I think if you were the mother of a child and something threatened your childs safety you may also loose the plot a little. I was pleased however to read the guy was apologetic, sometimes to add insult to injury the owner doesn't care.
  20. For some reason in America people seem to have this uncomfortable feeling with Black dogs, I guess you can liken it to the uncomfortable feeling people here have of Brindle dogs.....in reality it doesn't really make sense but it's what's in peoples heads.
  21. I'm not sure if you would call those behaviours 'Dominant'.....Dogs only do what is rewarding.....your dog wouldn't be doing any of those behaviours if they hadn't worked in the past and still work. Try ignoring (not even looking) at any unsolicated attention and apply 100% NILIF. Dogs can get off on even the negative form of attention. When the dog jumps if you act like a dead tree until the moment the dog has all feet on the ground and then praise that can work, you could also clicker train for all 4 feet on the ground. Try and be pro-active to the problem rather than reactive. Recently with my pup she was jumping as pups do and she had figured out that everytime she jumped that I would stop and then I would ask her to Sit and then she would get a treat so she ended up jumping because it was a way to get me to stop and interact with her. Have you tried redirecting the dog to a toy and then praising? Or you could simply stand up and walk away and seperate yourself from the dog, you could put the dog outside....there's a lot of methods depending on which you feel suits your training style.
  22. I think in Sydney there is only Castle Hill and Austral. Alot of people travel quite a distance to see Luci Ellem in Austral.
