  5. .My 16 year old son is High functioning Autistic. We got our late dog when he was 3 and a half;and his sisters were 5,7,and 9.She was 10 months old when we adopted her.She was an Irish wolfhound x bullterrier ,30 kilos. She was a calm dog, affectionate but not in your face all the time and that suited my son as he didnt like too much affection. He would pat her sometimes than that was enough. She would follow the kids around and just hang out and keep an eye on them.Trot after them on their bikes around the yard etc.She never knocked them over and was very gentle around kids of all ages. The kids would be the ones who sometimes ran into her and this never fazed her.I think a larger calmer breed would be good for your son at the moment.Look at a smaller one down the track when he has got used to a dog and how to behave with them. Here is a link to an old thread about this same topic; http://www.dolforums...istic-children/ The link works now.
  6. Ask your friend if you could take over ownership of the dog -change microchip details to your name- then you could have the dog desexed .You should talk calmly to your friend about the dogs needs as shouting will likely make her less inclined to listen to reason.Point out to her that there is more to caring for a dog than feeding and playing with it.Does the dog have regular vaccinations and worming, the yard needs to be made secure ,the dog needs to be taken on daily walks and given toys and bones to occupy it so it won't need to escape for exercise.Dog doo needs to be cleaned up from the yard.If the dog has pups is she prepared to have 10 + pups under foot messing in the house.Tell her not every whelping goes smoothly and what would she do if there were complications ,and would she hand feed pups if the mother couldn't.How would she feel if the dog escaped again while heavily pregnant.Make a list of points to discuss with her. While it is her dog you will not be able to take it for desexing unless she gives you the ok to do it on her behalf. Also get a quote from a couple of vets so she knows the cost of the desex ,Good luck.
  7. found this emergency treatment http://womansday.nin...ane-toad-poison and this If your dog is poisoned, it will usually suffer from seizures or convulsions. These convulsions are often fatal unless you seek urgent veterinary attention. STOP - DO THAT NOW. The poison can also affect the heart of dogs and cats, causing immediate cardiac arrest. After it has mouthed a toad, it is vital that you remove all trace of the poison from your pets' teeth and gums. Do this:- Use a jet of water from a hose to remove the toxin The water jet should be directed forward out of your pet's mouth, not down into its throat. Rubbing the teeth and gums with a soft rag containing human toothpaste may also help to remove the toxin. If your pet is poisoned If you suspect a toad has poisoned your pet, you will have a good chance of saving its life with this additinal prompt action. Transport the dog to your vet as quickly and quietly as possible Keep your pet cool (as they overheat when convulsing) and gently restrained If it is convulsing, it can damage itself by knocking against objects - try to gently restrain your pet by wrapping it in a towel It may not recognise you and may also become quite vicious. Handle an effected animal with extreme caution.

  13. I used to worm and flea treat my dog on the first day of the month. One or the other had sticker sin the box and i put one on the calendar on all the first month days. I kept the calendar page on the fridge .You can get cards with details of when puppy is due for vaccinations that also go on the fridge.I think i got mine from the vet. You could also put a different reminder sticker on the calendar to remind you when it's time for a vaccination,
