  1. Cavalier, Miniature Poodle or a Schipperke would be my recommendation. Perhaps you could speak to a Schipperke breeder about their requirements in your climate?
  2. I can remember when Ivermectic was in the discovery/testing phase - for horses (which it was used for before dogs) in England, and the general excitement from the (horse owning) public about it and the difference it would make to care and health. It was not approved for use in horses in Aust in the beginning (only cattle) so people were using it off licence. We have forgotten how things were before it was available Deserves a Nobel prize in my opinion. A wonderful boost for animal owners.
  3. That woman is a shallow, unempathic, brainless oxygen thief> And as Wobbly says probably a narcisstic sociopath. One look at her tells me she would never get through the front door of puppy purchase at chez Jed!!
  4. Retail industry would do or say anything to continue to be allowed to sell puppies in pet stores. It is a good % of their income. Get rid of pet shop sales.
  5. Sandgrubber, did the person who said this cite their qualifications or/and experience?
  6. The bones in the diet you are feeding seem to contain more than sufficient calcium. It is possible to get the calcium/phos. ratio wrong with supplements. Vets do not learn anything much about nutrition, and pick up most of it from dry food representatives!! Like Bob - I have been feeding raw for years with no problems. Dogs have been born, lived into their teens and died with no calcium problems.
  7. Very very few puppies sold in pet shops come from "reputable breeders". The majority come from puppy farms. Sad but true.
  8. I am astounded that this call was made without those making the call actually seeing the dogs, or laying hands on them, or knowing anything about the standard Very interesting.
  9. Very few pups are house trained at that age> Brain damage needs a proper assessment by a vet etc and even then it is very difficult to assess. Why do you think he is brain damaged?
  10. Yes, do let the breeder know. But- surely anyone breeding dogs would know enough to check for cleft palates ---- or their vet would. Perhaps they knew all along. It is difficult to close clefts at the back of the mouth, according to the specialist advice I had, as the stitches tend to tear away. However if the pup has managed for 9 weeks, he may manage for a lifetime with no lessening of quality of life with some special care. Good luck with Hercules.
  11. Question for Maremma breeders? Is this normal for Maremmas? I once owned a Maremmaa x Pyranean male and he didn'd do anything like this (and I very much doubt he came from a "reputable" breeder) To the OP - great decision. Hurts now, but time will heal, and better than being badly bitten in a couple of years.
  12. If she is in Bris (I see you are in Q) tell her to phone Val Bonnie of The Gap. She is in the phone book Top trainer. Your friend needs help FAST from someone who can genuinely help, not some half arsed behavourist. And Val will charge about 1/4 anyhow. Do it NOW - tell her.
  13. Presumably the judge knew what he was talking about. Did you not understand what he was saying or did you not agree? If you did not understand, have a look at the extension of the standard and ask someone you trust with good Visla experience, and ask them for an explanation. Good luck
  14. I recently had a 3 year old dog looking for a new home. I put all the vital information in the ad, including price, and my general area. I put up a photo of the dog's face, and said there were no more photos, please contact if interested. I said no photos because there are always people who are photo collectors - don't want a dog, just a photo. :D The best replies said "Hi, i'm xxxx - I would really like a (breed). I have done a lot of research, and know about the grooming requirements (or whatever) and would love to own a (breed). As I have a young child, I think an older dog (with show experience) may be more suitable. I have 800m2 and a 2m fence. The dog would be inside and would be a part of our family. I would very much like to talk to you about this. Ask them for a phone number and a time to phone. You can ask them all the health stuff then. I got 11 replies. 4 were very unsuitable - and I told them that (nicely). The others were ok. 2 stood out. Had the things I had asked for, and had experience with the breed. I contacted them by email .... I wouldn't have had the time to supply all health information - and particularly to 11 people - and I would only have supplied that to the person I thought might suit the dog.
  15. As a committed boxer owner and breeder since the last century, if you like boxers, get one. I see nothing in your "likes" that pre-cludes a boxer. Fantastic with children - "they are noted from olden times for their love of children" - terrific watchdogs - faithful and joyful. As to the running - I have always ridden horses, and the boxer/s always came out for a ride. I lived in W Qld for some years where it was often 42 degrees or more. We would go on 5 - 20kl rides (not every day) and the boxer easily kept up. A boxer will be whatever you want him to be. Train him with sense and respect from a puppy, and he will be exactly what you want. He will be good with other dogs, and good with strangers. He will be honest and loyal, he will be your best friend and protector till the last beat of his heart. He will be a good watchdog. He wont shout abuse at passers-by - although he will warn you, but if he perceives danger, he will be ready. My girl was 5 (with no baby or child experience) when the baby arrived. I brought her home from hospital and said "here's our baby" -- boxer said "oh, goody, OUR baby? Oh, I'll take care of her" -- and she did. Have you read the boxer thread here? Worth a read!! Go to only a responsible and reputable Vic Dogs breeder. Ask them about heart testing of the adults, and how they they do it, (and ask to see results) ask them what they know of JKD, ask them about food, HD and bloat and listen to their replies. Do they know what they are talking about? Have they been breeding for a long time? Do they, or did they, show? I can give you names of some responsible Vic breeders if you want to pm me. Don't expect to get a pup tomorrow, you may have to wait a while. Don't deny yourself!!
  16. Seems as if someone didn't like the idea of the horses going to the knackery (me either). Maybe couldn't dispose of the bodies at home? Expensive to bury, difficult to burn, and against some council rules .... and guaranteed to get the neighbours off side - they probably thought there was plenty of vacant land around ....... and didn't know, or didn't care that it was a national park. The problem seems to be the site of dumping. I will pass on the horsemeat sandwich thanks! :
  17. I think we all need to be very careful about signing some of the petitions doing the rounds, before we have carefully considered the implications of signing. In this case, pet ads are banned from Gumtree. They are already banned from ebay. Then a petition comes around asking that pup ads be banned from newspapers. That leaves very few places for anyone with litters to advertise. Pedigrees - on dogzonline. No advertising for anyone else. So, what do people who had an accidental litter do? Petshop? (But we want to ban them selling pups) Give them away? (and who would take them?) Keep them? Euthanise them? And then a petition goes around banning pet ads on dog sites such as dogzonline. Then pedigree breeders cannot find a market for their litters. So they stop breeding. Result? No more dogs. We need to be very vigilant about animal rights and their intentions to stop pet ownership. No matter what guise - PETA, HSUS, Animals Australia, Animal Lib, and some branches of the RSPCA. I have advertised a couple of litters on gumtree, got great enquiries, and sold to some fabulous people who had never heard of dogzonline, but did want a registered dog. Trust we breeders to weed out the unsatisfactory, and uncaring but do let registered dogs continue to be advertised on Gumtree - and such places. Also, if people can see the difference between purebred, registered dogs/pups advertised, and what they offer and muttleys or oodles and doodles, it gives them some yardstick, and comparison.
  18. According to this they are labradoodles with a different name. http://www.the-australian-cobberdog.com/ Then that site would be wrong. Not every Web site has accurate information. Looks like the original genuine website to me. They are saying it is anyhow.
  19. I wonder how much input Rutland Manor, original breeder of these dogs, who had more than several mentions by the RSPCA, and many world wide complaints from buyers, has into this new dog?
  20. If this is correct, more euros for the KC. They obviously don't care.
  21. The cost of court cases they lost slowed Queensland councils down on declaring dogs "pit bulls" and the same thing seems to be happening in Vic. Thank Dog for the wonderful people who organised the court defences for these dogs. Great job, guys!! It's so good to see that the slaughter might slow down. Thanks to the gov too
  22. Glad all is going well. Do not have him desexed under at least 6 months. A friend of mine who breeds griffons suggests 8 - 12 months. If you allow him to be in the back yard alone, you run the risk of theft, as well as attack by loose dogs, and perhaps attacks by crows/hawks etc. Consider whether he could be inside somewhere (laundry again?) with toys, a bone etc, when you are out. Much safer Good luck, they are fabulous dogs.
  23. It is a sebaceous cyst. You may have to keep squeezing it a bit to keep it open and draining. And it never hurts to dribble a little peroxide into the hole. That will help clean up any more gunk. Just in the first few days
  24. I love updates. I love to hear how the dog is going, and I specially love photos. First I like to know that the dog is appreciated, and is a "good boy". Second, all information helps me with my breeding program. Maybe a pup which didn't seem to have a particularly good head at 8 weeks now has a great head - and I need to take that into account. Nearly all breeders just loooooooove updates. One of my recent litter was a cracker, and he is now on facebook, and improving all the time .. probably worth repeating the mating. A couple of things I didn't like much have improved .................. Someone contacted me on facebook, to say her cavalier which I bred was 12, and had never been ill. Now that he was older, they would like another one from me, and were contacting me to buy one, or order one. I didn't even bother replying. Why? Because not once in that dog's life had she ever bothered to let me know how he was going. Not once. When she had had him for a week, I phoned up to see how things were going, and got the absolute bum's rush. So yep, keep up the upgrates :D
