  1. The emergency is not a nice come here thing it's a just get over here as fast as you can. There's no sit or anything, it's not on the dogs name but on a sound you wouldn't normally make. Mines on a clicking sound, or was until the new neighbours used that for their dogs. Mines very much conditioned to be on the run and getting the heck out of there.
  2. Coukd you ask the vet what they would be looking for and try do the tests yourself at home. Not a hundred percent but it might give you a clue if there's something wrong.
  3. Dopey dog finally settled on the couch wrapped in a blanket. I was working right next to him but didn't notice the blanket fell off, he cannot regulate his body temp and was shaking so hard I noticed the couch vibrating at 2 pm. Poor sausage I wrapped him up and he sat on me with his head under my jumper for twenty minutes before he stopped shivering. Natural selection had no part in the creation of Jake.
  4. We never seem to teach the extension of a trick, so I can get the scoot in and I can get leg weaves just by luring. Can't get the feet on feet though, I can get him to waddle a few steps with me walking. I like the bucket idea. Jake will use his mouth to squeak a toy but won't carry weight, I suppose the wrinkles might make it uncomfortable.
  5. Snook good to hear from you althpugh not the best news. Poor Justice, that would be heartbreaking to see. Jake has some new bizarre behaviour and it has been suggested that as anxious dogs get older their behaviour can become less controlled. Possibly his age and the repeated experiences are adding up. For fun today Jake will not detach himself from me, I think because I went for a 3 hour bike ride without him on Saturday. At least it's cold but it's a bit tricky because he puts his head on my foot whilst I'm sewing and sometimes presses the machine foot. Dopey dog.
  6. Unfortunately I have been threatened by some people and there are some streets I can't walk on for that reason. At least they were honest enough to tell me to my face rather than just reporting without telling me. There may not be anything council would do but I'd rather stay below the radar and it wouldn't be beyond some people to fabricate stuff.
  7. Love it that dog is the image of Jake. Owners aren't bad either????
  8. High five and low five. Stick your foot out for low five, if you teach it both sides you can get lots of fun walking backwards getting fives. Scoot in- sitting between your legs and then walking in that position. A hoop to stand in and a touch pad to stand on, then moving between the two. How did you teach the head shake?
  9. Jake dilemma number 57: so at training this week we had my normal trainer and then another trainer with a youngish dog. Jake has been a bit feral lately and I was working hard to try keep him under control. Finally my trainer said "I don't really see a change in Jake but you seem more stressed." So I took a minute to think about it and realised that I was quite concerned about Jake upsetting the new, young dog (we've been working with a very stable older dog) and the impression he was making on the other trainer. We have also had a tough week with the floods and no electricity so I think I started closer to my threshold. Now when I'm walking I'm in that same mind frame, I'm trying to quieten him so he doesn't get reported and I don't really see that I can not do anything. When we are training in our regular set up I just let him finish his barking episodes and then continue with whatever training task we were doing. Again my dog is messing with my head????.
  10. I'll bring Jake then no one will hear the tollers noise and everyone will run faster. Those pics are beautiful. There's something special about a flying dog.
  11. When I had horses someone told me once never to ask a horse to do something you weren't prepared to make it do. If I ask then ,if I get no, I will calmly walk over, clip on a lead and then walk back to where I called him. Then some nice pats and praise but no treat. Jake and I have some interesting "get in the car" dialogue. He always tries to get out the door if he sees me going out, he will then head to his outside bed or the sun lounge, look sheepish and refuse to make eye contact. If I'm just going to pickup at the station I'm happy for him to ride with but he insists he will "just wait on the couch." I walk to the car open the door and offer him a ride. If he doesn't come ambling over I walk back, put the leash on and take him inside and leave him at home. We have progressed to the point where he will budge once I pick up the leash and decide what he's doing but he's a bulldog so it's never with any haste. He's never off leash so I never really get to proof his recall but I do have a very reliable behavioural interuper, again I've never been in a situation to really test it but it works a treat in the garden.
  12. No I wouldnt contest but I'd take my dog to my vet, no way would I hand him over to strangers. It's tricky to understand each situation. Folks up the road had a very friendly unfortunate looking dog who escaped, got on the wrong side of breed judgement and I think did about three months in jail before release. I suppose if I had a dog that would pass a temperament test then I might contest and I suppose one day becomes a week that becomes two years. When we got Hank he had been at the SPCA for eleven months which surprised me but they said he had such an easy going nature they didn't think he was stressing in the cage environment (I might have mentioned before that he was Hank the wonder dog????). Some dogs would cope and if their only crime is to look wrong then I would see myself fighting. If the dog has however attacked then I'd be having a long hard think about whether I'm able to manage the dog and whether he should be released. Sometimes judgements might just be warranted.
  13. I live down the road from a school and many mothers are pushing a pram with an off leash dog because apparently you can't manage a leashed dog and a pram together. Unbelievably this puts their unleashed dogs amongst primary school children around a school that borders the pacific highway. I only walk at about ten for this reason and go out after 4.30 in the afternoon, keeps the crazies away. Great that she's doing so well, set backs are just bumps in their road. Unfortunately they happen, you have some chocolate and a few bad days and then more chocolate and you're back on track????.
  14. The Dane rescue website has good insight and practical advice. Prozac works well for my boy. Lots of training in stay. Practicing opening door, knocking on door whilst in stay. I have built up to a stay outside whilst I get in my car and drive up the driveway. Crate training if you're only going to be a few hours away. It's probably a combination of lots of little things to nudge her confidence along.
  15. Oh my dog. Just one word..how?
  16. Possibly someone recognized the dog and owners? There was a fair bit of detail to go on.
  17. No kirty, you did the right thing by calling in the top dog. Absolutely no fail in recognizing when you're out of your depth. You're right Nekhbet, sometimes the human race sucks, seldom the dog.
  18. Mmm last posted yesterday hadn't become a snowstorm yet?
  19. What? I'm going to be eaten by a Polynesian? That's a great analogy. Thank goodness some sense is being found.
  20. Normal dogs are vastly underrated. By the way Baylee is the name of my next dog????. Maybe it will be a rotti.
  21. Very nice, I have the no dogs leash but the writings small. If you can read it you have super powers or you're way to close. People should be able to read that easily. Yay more dog gear for me.
  22. Don't ask the question if you don't want to hear the answer. That's also very aggressive of her in a way. I'd be pretty miffed.
  23. Well we just barked our way through the Attenborough bower bird show so tomorrow is back to one Prozac a day.
  24. Yes, he definitely does the maths on what reward is required. No flies on him. I do wonder if bulldogs are smarter, they certainly get what they want for minimal energy expenditure. BC has Stella been better on the Prozac do you think? I've been trying to reduce Jakes dose but I'm going to have to put him back up as I feel it's just not safe. It just took me 45 minutes to walk around the block, less than a kilometer because he kept throwing tantrums at imaginary dogs. I had forgotten the bad old days when he did that. He's also back to having a huge startle response to loud noises.
  25. My kids had the same attitude so it could just be me. I do think they are not very "need to please owner" motivated. I sort of feel bad because all my previous dogs were so well behaved and all they ever got was an "attaboy". Jake gets so much and he's the nortiest dog I've ever owned.
