  1. Horses neck and mane and the head kind of brings those giant leopard slugs to mind. I'm guessing twin headed slug-horse from a post nuclear apocalypse.
  2. At the moment we are having some "discussions" about getting into the crate in the car. I have a van and a very large wire crate that has a mattress in. He's happy to be in there. So I always lift him into the back of the van and then he walks into the crate and then he gets a treat. He's now decided that unless he actually gets to see the treat he's not going to get in the crate because I tried to downgrade the treat from peanut butter to kibble. So basically I just sit and wait until he gets into the crate. Clients came round to find us sitting in the back of the van ignoring each other. They parked their car, we had a chat then we went inside. Finally they asked what we had been doing when they arrived? Actually we had been practicing getting into the crate without prior sighting of peanut butter and we had been sitting there for 30 minutes because I thought that would be a quick training session before work started. You need a lot of time and patience to outwit a bulldog.
  3. Karen Overall relaxation protocol on Google is helpful. I can now put my boy in a stay, get in the car and drive down the drive. He is on Prozac for aggression issues but it's actually had a bigger effect on his separation anxiety. I believe confining to a crate when you go is helpful too.
  4. Yea. He's such a character, I think Bulldogs are a laugh a minute their thoughts are so transparent.
  5. I copped a "bite" from an off leash dog I was punching to get away from my leashed dog. It can happen that a tooth snags in all the excitement rather than a dog actually intentionally biting. I'd play it really cool for now. There may be some Chinese whispers going on and it's just best to let it all go away. The dangerous dog laws aren't that extreme, a dog can still live a very happy life and even if declared you can fulfil the training etc and apply for a new assessment. Well done on keeping it together through an emotional time. Give your marshmallow a hug from me.
  6. Aah the see another dog and not embarrass owner trick... We are trying some new things with Jake and he's trying some new stuff on me. We have started touch pad training at home and he's been trying complete indifference at training. I have some lovely fast tricks at home and then at training he just wanders off, pretends he can't see the touch pad or mat and lies down and cracks a snore. So last week we did no training at home and put another dog in the room when we were at training. We also decided that instead of correcting him for having a lunge we would just wait him out, some pressure on his harness but leaving his collar loose. Success, he came and asked each day for his trainng sessions and actually unpacked his bag of training gear. He was all excited and did all his tricks at training and he only went nuts three times and twice he was able to call himself off and refocus on training. Out and about I am trying the self calming if it's not going to bother other people. He's part frenchie and when frustrated he "talks", today he yelled "hey there" at a dog across the road. He also had a flat out go at his arch enemy border collie for about ten seconds but then just stopped, looked at me walked into heel and started doing LAT with absolutely no tension in his body. I do love the Jake experience, every day is unpredictable.
  7. I'm guessing there was probably a bit of barking and excitement across the fence and your big dog probably leapt up and found himself with a foot over the fence and then just scrambled over. Probably took himself by surprise. He may have just galloped over and had a bit of an over excited greeting before being hauled off by bystanders. You'd expected some serious damage if he had actually gone in with intent. However now he knows he can do it he may try escaping again. I'd say it would be very important that he not get a taste of success in fence scaling. I think it would be a hard habit to deal with. Good luck and just keep breathing. The dog wasn't injured so this can all be sorted. If there's statements in the interview that make you emotional just take your time in responding. If you need a break in the process to gather yourself just ask for a bit of time out and get up and walk away for a bit.
  8. Definitely get Steve on the phone. There's a lot of ins and outs and he knows what to do. It's easier to keep the dog from being declared than to try get it lifted after it has been declared so having someone in the know will be advantageous although not cheap. Nsw fine for an attacking dog is about $550, the other owner will need to sign a stat dec. Rangers are humans too, going in and trying to blame the other dog isn't going to get them far. Contrition and genuine attempts to prevent the dog escaping again will go a lot further. I'd be locking the dog in the house until it's all sorted. Keep calm and stay polite.
  9. Darn, maybe he just likes casa del Nekhbet. Better luck next time Rocky.
  10. Yay. A happy ending for kirty and Rocky made by Nekhbet. You're a legend.
  11. I'm wondering if the honey I'm using is being made with the same pollens that cause Jajes allergies since the hive is about 300m away from me. Could they somehow be attenuating the allergens somehow analogous to how vaccines are made from infectious organisms. Jake was worse on calendula tea and all the diet modifications did little. Somehow this has been nearly miraculous and when I spoke to the vet he said he was still seeing many itchy dogs so not just the cooler weather. Im taking it too now, might as well have in on the good stuff.
  12. So I read this thread and remembered I had a jar of honey that I bought on the side of the road from people a bit further up the creek. I started giving Jakje a tablespoon morning and night with all his medicine. Results have been spectacular. He is on only one polaramine a day now and all his open bumps have healed up, he had two persistent spots on his face that had been there for weeks. One is still slightly visible but the hair is nearly grown over both. Previously he had to have his paws rinsed every second day in quit itch and a bath every seven to ten days. I bathed him yesterday for the first time in three weeks just because he was dirty. I had tried pretty much everything with either worse or no effect. This has been amazing.
  13. Hank was very sore towards the end but would bark and do the "Hanky dance" at the door anytime I went to the bathroom after 4pm. It would take an hour to amble 800m to the dog park, hang out and watch the action and then amble home. Yes some people did comment once his rear end started looking wobbly and wasted. It's tough growing old but if people are squeamish they got a big shock coming their way. Jake just started his cartrophen and arthritis treatments. Seems too soon for me.
  14. I love my boy because he learns things I don't know I'm teaching him. I have people with kids coming to the house for work so our greetings are very important. I've taught him to sit and then when I've got the ok from people we go up and touch each person. I do this because often people say they're ok but when a big snorty bulldog comes up to them they're not that calm. Yesterday a car with three people turned up, they've been a few times so I released Jake without formally walking up to each person. Determined to get his reward he galloped up to each person and gave them a nudge and then screeched up to me and sat and started looking meaningfully at the peanut butter jar. I had to reward him because it's what he's been trained to do but I think I'll have to make sure he's always on lead to touch because I can understand people being slightly intimidated by being charged and nudged by a flying bulldog.
  15. I can't think I've ever seen a purebred in a pet shop, unless those megabuck mongrels are purebred now. So let's maybe not get the kids a puppy, let's show them what the puppy looks like grown up because if they don't like it then they're better off not getting a puppy. Pet shops charge ridiculous amounts, once your average person starts doing some research they'll soon realise what a rip off pet shops are. That's more what they're afraid of methinks.
  16. Every time I wait for the kettle to boil I throw in some tricks.
  17. So the neighbour asked her and she paid him no heed because she obviously knows exactly how the neighbours horses react and she's clearly watched Her dog walk past without bothering them. A few weeks ago I chased the dog that caused Naybekkes death from my chicken house again. I asked the owner if it was her dog and explained that when her dog barks and runs up and down in front of my chicken house the chickens hurt themselves by flying into the mesh. She told me adamantly her dog didn't do that. So I explained that the next time she's missing her dog she might want to contact a far away pound because the dog I catch will be going to an out of area pound.
  18. Oh Krislin that's one of those moments where nothing you can say is going to make it better. Blegh to taking it off her. I'd only had Jake 2 weeks and a client came round to have some minor alteration done in a costume. We were chatting while I stitched and Jake was sitting under the table. At one point my needle and thread went missing, just completely gone. Anyway found another and finished the job and then noticed the dog drooling. I must have had the needle dangling and he reached up and snaffled it, luckily it had got stuck right in the back of his tongue. Whilst they were in there they cleaned up his excess throat tissue and gave him a nose job as well. So all worked out for the best.
  19. It's not as mind boggling as it seems. I think I used fedex as my courier and there were forms from them and forms that you download once you've paid for the test. If I remember rightly I think I did the test on Monday, you take all the forms to the vet so he signs off on everything and there's some processing done at the vet that took about an hour. You pack it with bubble wrap and ice bricks and I put it in a little Tupperware. If you do it early in the morning then fedex collect by midday and off it goes. They bring a cardboard box with them when they pick it up, there's customs forms because it's a blood product but it's not too complex. I just let everyone tell me where to sign and voila. It was great peace of mind having it done.
  20. I read in the health forum that raw honey is good for skin issues, as it happens people up the road are bee keepers and sell it to the neighbourhood. Pretty lucky for me. Are you sending blood to Jean Dodds? I've done it twice and it's very thorough. Neither time showed any fixable problem, sometimes I wish there was a "thing" I could fix and everything would be alright. The good news is Jake played his morning game of bitey face for the first time in two weeks so he must be feeling better.
  21. Jake has a blood test every 6 months, this time his results are all borderline and some slightly out of range. He's been a little off the last few weeks and because he's hard to examine we can't exactly pinpoint what's wrong. However it could fit with the side effects of Prozac use. It's tough because we would need to sedate him for x Rays and further tests and that comes with its own risk. So for now we are going to see if we can wind back the Prozac and he's been given pain relief which made a difference within 36 hours. Poor sausage I feel like a drug peddler doling out his drugs everyday. I've added raw honey to his diet, apparently he likes that as much as peanut butter.
  22. I love my present vet, he works on time so there's never a queue of dogs and he believes me when I say Jake is aggressive. They arrange us between other kinds of animals, cats and birds mostly and have a great side door for quick exits. We had a tough visit earlier this week and weren't able to complete the exam. I went back this morning and we got through it but unfortunately we are going to have to start tapering off the Prozac. Yikes this is going to be fun. This weeks funny moments have been watching Jake climbing over the pile of rubble that is being excavated to make a sunken feature garden. Now he could just step to the right by about seventy centimeters and walk around the other side of the tree but he isn't able to do that. He has little quirks and I know he has certain routes he follows around the garden, he doesn't like crossing open lawn and will stick to the edge of the flower beds. I just let him do his thing on his own time but it really is weird how he can climb over rubble, which is technically a new scary thing but will not walk on the wrong side of the tree.
  23. So we went to the vet this evening. I carry a water bottle on my walking belt and with all the distractions of getting out the car whilst watching for other dogs I didn't take it off. Once we were off and in motion I just shoved it to the middle of my back. We were met at the door and ushered into the treatment room( tip for those who don't like waiting at vets, take a DA dog). I did a bit of training and then sat on the plastic chair. After a few minutes I felt uncomfortable, wiggled around a bit, but even more uncomfortable. Stood up to check and yep, the water bottle had twisted upside down and was dripping. Had been all the way from the car, just a little bit, enough to leave a trail but not enough to alert me. So yep I'm the old lady with the bat crap crazy bulldog who left a dribble trail into the vet and left with a visible wet patch on the back side of my black jeans. Nothing to be embarrassed about, really. Please tell me how your dogs have made you feel ten centimeters tall I'm sure I'll feel better.
