What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) I got my first Staffy (byb ) when I was 8, 'family dog'. I now own a papered Staffy, female (yes, a bitch she is ) How common is it in Australia? I work in a Kennel and do Pet Sitting, it is very rare for us to have no Staffys in care. When I was in WA it seemed that every second dog was a Staffy there! What is the average lifespan? My old man was PTS at the age of 14. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? I am a slack owner (will be the first to admit it!) I take her for a walk every 2 or 3 days, she loves it, but she is just as happy to snuggle up with me on the lounge, as long as she is with me, she seems happy. She was even happy to sit in the car for 4 days when I moved to WA, didnt hear a word from her, she was with me, so was happy! Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? As others have said, yes, if they research and know what they are getting Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? My girl hates being alone. She is ok if my other dog is there, but if i take Atlas for a walk, she freaks out. Neither of my Staffys were only dogs, so never had to sit in the yard alone! How much grooming is required? I give her a brush once a week, a bath when i think of it, she wears her nails down herself and i have never had to cut them. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? Some can be too full on, Kaos is a full on dog, but knows she has to be calm around children and older people (she adores my grandfather) I didnt answer all the questions, as I am not a breeder, and Kaos is my first papered dog, thought better to leave them to others who know better than me My girl is dog aggressive, something I now know i could have changed, had i known then what i do now! She is good with my Bull Terrier, she is actually scared of him! She loves people and cats, adores cats! She is very full on and can walk for hours and hours. Kaos isnt a big talker, she does back chat and will woowoo if i am ignoring her, I have taught her to speak on command, and it has helped a lot! I have seen a few Staffys that TALK A LOT!! We have one at work who went home last week, we just spent all day laughing at him, he didnt shut up! I loved it!! She has been known to howl, but only when at the kennels or vets. Oh, she also makes the worst noises when playing, i have had neighbours run over here thinking she was badly hurt I have found it very easy to train her, she learns things in no time at all. I taught her to fetch in one day and to play dead in half a day. She is very protective of me, has stopped someone entering the yard, and will put herself between me and someone she thinks is dangerous (If i am joking around with friends or family and things get rough, she will step in to save me ) Staffordshire Bull Terrier - one breed I will never be without, they are my heart breed.

this annoys me, many many people can have entire animals and not have puppies, i know many entire bitches and dogs who have fantastic owners and have never had a puppy. My dog was 3 when desexed and i never had a problem with him and he was only desexed for health reasons otherwise he wouldnt have been done! I agree with the rest, vet trip, it could be puppies, it could be something else! I myself have 2 Dobermanns that are entire - but they are both Australian Champion Show Dogs and will be bred from and used for stud. If a dog is just a pet and is not a pedigree purebred dog then it should not be kept entire for any longer than 6 months or you will be asking for the problems you friend is now facing. There are enough backyard breeders out there breeding yet more mutts that are not of high quality or are in the puppy mill "designer dog" fad that abounds at the moment. Responsible dog owners do desex their dogs so that they are more social and make better pets. Get over your annoyance - because nothing annoys me more than fools who own entire male mutts that make excuses for their dogs aggression (or use the dog to compensate for their own small appendages LOL) or who have bitches that end up pregnant to an unknown male and therefore put the bitch in jeopardy as they have no idea what will happen when they are whelped. Breeding a dog is something that only good breeders should persue - BYB annoy the hell out of me as they do not care about health testing or genetics nor the fact that finding worthy homes for puppies is no easy task. Also keeping dogs entire and not breeding them can cause many health issues in the future and is not recommended by vets. cool, thanks I get it! Only people with Australian Champion Show Dogs are responsible enough to stop unwanted pregnancies! Oh and i also know many many dogs who are dog aggressive, and who have been desexed (including my bitch). 99% of the people I meet with entire dogs understand their needs and do all they can to keep them safe. No need to lecture me breeding, i have worked in rescue, i am friends with a few breeders, i know what can go wrong, that is why when i get my next male and he isnt desexed, he will be kept in a run when i am not home. Australian Champion Show Dog or not. And i thought the idea of this thread was to find out how to abort the puppies, good on the owner for doing something about the problem.

*cough cat-trap cough* Tell neighbours that you are having a stray cat problem, and you will be setting traps in one week time to sort them out, all cats will be going to the pound i LOVE cats, have 3 of my own, but i would never let them roam and sit in someone elses yard.

Hi Guys! Just a quick question, a friend of mine has just got a new dog, a Amstaff X. They are in Adelaide and were not sure of how BSL works there (and i have no idea). They are worried that even though the dog is chipped and came from a pound, that the ranger can still pick them up for having a restricted breed? I know in NSW it can happen, but not sure about Adelaide. Would love it if someone could give me some info so i can pass onto them! Thanks!! Cin.

Worms In Cats And Dogs Are They The Same
Teebs replied to doglova's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use a spot on for the cats, but i cant remember what it is called! I used the last of it last week and threw the package away and my new stuff isnt in yet I cant give one of mine tablets, so if i didnt have a spot on, she wouldnt be done! -
Kaos hates roo as well, will eat anything else, but not roo my boss had a dog, about 6 months old. I offered him a full frankfurt and he had no idea what to do with it! he put it in his mouth and spat it out and licked it and chewed alittle bit and dropped it again, funniest thing i have ever seen :p - we used frankfurt for training with him, so he liked it, but didnt know what to do with it not chopped up!! We tried it a few weeks later, and got the same reaction!

and VERY easy to chew apart

I find it easier to bath in the shower than the bath
-
the one i used to use, you filled it yourself... only used it a few times tho, the area it was in was filthy! The one at work is great, the water is from the tap, so no holding area under to reuse the water (dont know what it is called ) we dont allow the public to use it and it is scrubed and F10ed after each use.

It bit your dog? Report it!

ok, just tracked down the vets in Bathurst, they have a website, so i have shot off an email asking for info, will let you know what they say! ETA i have just done a search and have emailed a few other vets... never know, they may have changed the way they run things since last time i talked to them!
-
Exactly what i thought, and told the vet so, but they didnt want to listen!
-
I knew i had a question, couldnt remember it One of the vets i talked to told me that the 3 year vaccination can only be used if the dog has had it since a puppy, that I can not do my dogs, because they have only ever had the 12 monthly one and you can not swap over. anyone heard that before?
-
I dont think i would be taking my dog anywhere till i got the NOI ?
-
damn, i dunno what to do - maybe i should head off to Sydney sometime and get a titer test done?
-
I have no idea, im going to have to ring and ask as well!
-
Honestly, if i didnt have to kennel them, i wouldnt vaccinate. The cats wont be done again unless i need to kennel (Sumo will, just his 12 monthly one) Im going away in October, so i need to board them, so they have to be done (unless someone wants to come and housesit for a few days ? :p )
-
How far from Orange are you? I do know there is a vet in Bathurst (30 min from orange) who does the 3 year, for $90, that is who i am going to if i get it done
-
it annoys me, cause there are some people on here who go on and on about getting a titre test, they cant understand that some of us just can not do it, i cant afford that price! I would love to get it done, but not possible - i kennel my dogs, so i have no choice, i have to vaccinate!
