  1. A barbie collie is a term that is used to describe the way the classically marked show BCs all look the same. It is mainly used in the US on forums like the BC Boards. ETA the show standard for BCs has no reference to marking other than the base colour must predominate so the classic markings are fashion not breed . And it's used by nasty, ill informed people with no idea to bait and insult those who breed well structured, beautiful to look at Border Collies! They also need to actually LOOK at a lot of show Border Collies and get the nonsense out of their heads that they are ALL "perfectly" marked. What a crock. The majority do NOT have the "classic" markings! Oooo should add I do NOT mean Janba here Just adding on to her comments xx
  2. Well bully for you. I DID see it as a smart ass response and responded in kind. Merry Christmas to you as well.
  3. I am one of the people that spoke of my experience with aborting a litter. I worked for a repo vet for years. There was no WAY I was allowing a mother/son mating to go full term and I'm very happy with the decision I made, it didn't affect her at all! She whelped two litters after the abortion and lived to a very old age. I wasn't being judgemental, just posting of my experience. me too. my father to daughter foal not only wasnt born with two heads, 8 legs andgoodnessknows what else so many seem to think is the result of such breedings. he became a living legend in his field of sport. such matings have been used for centuaries by highly sucessful breeders. its only since the advent of libbers applying the bible to animals all the breast beating started. inbreeding does not cause mutations. any two with a deletrious gene will produce an affected youngster, regardless never have acommon ancestor. yet all i hear is if its deletrious,,,inbreeding caused it... lots of progess back to the dark ages of superstition instead of knowledge again I have youngsters here who are father daughter, mother son, bother sister 1/2 and 3/4 brother and sister and they are getting better with each generation, size wise, conformation wise and in a breed where two scids genes will kill not one ever born...weird eh? mmmmmm n not a club foot among em,,,toddole off to a few shows and see how many club feet there are at the end of a lovely outcrossed pedigree.... soundness is the criteria first and foremost, but who would think it? Well funnily enough for me I KNOW my dogs and I KNOW that the mating is something I would NEVER have done. You see I AM a responsible breeder that does health testing and in terms of my highly reliable DNA TESTS it was NEVER going to be allowed to happen. You do KNOW what DNA tests are do you???? so no matter how much you bleat on with your nonsense I will NEVER regret my decision. Oh and by the way, I'm at shows MOST weekends so no need for your smart arse comment about that either AND Merry Christmas.

  5. She had an ultrasound at 21 days and we went from there. She absorbed the majority and passed two. It was stressful for me but she was absolutely fine. It was a LONG time ago now so I can't remember the name of the injection used. Have a chat to your vet and decide what is right for you. I'd also have a chat to your Canine Council if they haven't gone on holidays. Mistakes happen, don't beat yourself up about it xx
  6. Well I can tell you my story connected with an unwanted pregnancy. I had a crafty girl that learnt to undo a screen door and got outside and her young son mated her. No brainer for us, we aborted the litter. She bounced back perfectly and produced two further litters for us without a single problem. If I were ever unlucky to have an unwanted mating again, I would chose aborting the litter again. Let's face it, these things DO happen from time to time. Good luck with your decision xx
  7. I would also ask your vet to check her blood sugar levels. We have just had to nurse a bitch through late onset gestational diabetes and significant weight loss was one of the symptoms. Probably not the case, but it would be worth checking it just to rule it out

  9. I class every litter as a loss of money to breed what i need for the next generation. I dont even consider the thought of even breaking even. I look at the cost of the semen and the insemination and the raising of the litter as the cost of getting what i need for myself Ian I understand that and have yet to come close to breaking even BUT I do think that we shouldnt think that making a profit is a bad thing!! Many that I know that have made a lucky profit have put it back into their breeding program. If more ethical breeders actually made a profit from litters by charging appropriately can you imagine the power it would give them to produce amazing examples of their breed?? I would love to import semen for my girl but honestly dont have the spare cash to do so- if I knew the litter were not going to set me back a couple of grand then maybe I would risk it but you cant and I do think that is why the number of pure bred pups being born is dropping. There is no "profit" when the money goes back into the dogs as it usually does. Money from puppies becomes turnover and that is very different to profit. Profit is what the tax department wants to know about at the end of the year after you have deducted all expenses. I don't know any reputable breeder that the tax department classes as a business because they make a profit. alpha bet, good luck with the plan but do consider that a lot of frozen semen pregnancies only produce one puppy and often none at all. That is absolutely not true. Frozen semen technology now a days is fantastic and rates of success are very high. Working in the industry for the number of years that I did, whilst there were "some" singleton litters and "some" that didn't result in a pregnancy, the instances of successful implantation far outweighed these.
  10. My dogs get blocks of time during the summer months where they have free run of our acreage. HOWEVER, for the most part they are safely locked in their individual pens in a cool room attached to the back of the house. Why? Because last year I lost a dog to a snake bite in Summer because I used to let my dogs have free reign all day every day and now I have a dead dog. My dogs LOVE going into their beds, given a treat and sleeping for the hours they are locked up and I have the peace of mind knowing they are safe! They are also locked up whenever I go out now, (which isn't very often) and that's also for my peace of mind. I know when I get home that everyone will be exactly where I left them.
  11. WIth my darling Dude it was a gradual thing. It was in his older years that I realised just how much he meant to me. I've never had a bond like his and mine in the show ring since. We just "fit" together as a team and we adored each other. His mum Shiva was just everything you could want in a dog. It wasn't just me that was under her spell, she reeled everyone in. Even the general public at Pet Expos and Royals etc etc. She was a very special Border xxx The Wicked Whippet has been my everything from the first day I set eyes on her. She is MINE and I'm HERS and every other person on the planet is just an inconvenience to her. I couldn't love anything more Poor neglected hubby even has to share our bed with my little brown and white devil. In saying that I adore all my dogs, but these three are just something very very special
  12. One whole year has gone, gone in the blink of an eye. I still ache like it was yesterday. But I can think of you now and smile my dear boy. Hope you are happy wherever it is that you are
  13. NOT BRED IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! If a person wants to breed dogs then they damn well should learn about that breed and do all relevant health testing to try and prevent the heartache that happened to that family in that thread. It makes my blood boil!
  14. It was a super Royal for us this year. We won bitch challenge and reserve challenge Border Collie and our gorgeous young boy won PUPPY IN GROUP!!!! Such a thrill. I've just arrived back home exhausted but very very happy
  15. 10 months have gone and his loss still takes my breath away Missing him today xx
  16. This. I for the life of me wouldn't be able to recall how much it cost. WIth the three that we have lost in recent times most of the days themselves are just a blur of heartache I'm shocked at the variance in prices reading this and very shocked at some of the vets' attitudes as well. Hugs to everyone who has been through this. I wouldnt' wish it on anyone
  17. Happy Birthday my dear Dude. I hope you and your sister have had a ball today xxx Missing you down here
  18. As a reputable registered breeder, it makes my blood boil every time I hear a very sad story like this. People wonder why I despise BYBers as much as I do. The next argument I get into with a numpty who sees nothing wrong with BYBing I will point them in the direction of this thread. This could have been avoided and Owey's family spared this heartache. To Owey and your family, I am so very sorry for your loss. What wonderful people you are to take this baby into your home and offer him all the support you could give him until the end. I wish there were more puppy buyers in the world like you. Sending gentle hugs to you all today RIP little Bailey
  19. I'm hoping that Gypsy found her way to you yesterday when we gave her, her wings. Take care of her dear boy and show her the ropes. Missing you every day xx RIP dear Gypsy, almost 14 years of life and you lived every single one of them to the full xx
