Why would you not give prednisone for itchiness and also to mini schnauzers? I am after any advice and if there are reasons I would like to discuss them with my vet. I only want the very best for my girl and will do or try anything. I do know that dogs obviously can react to any changes but absolutely nothing has changed. I haven’t changed cleaning products, washing products, nothing inside and the yard hasn’t changed either. And definitely no fleas. I once had a schnauzer allergic to flea bites so know all about that. It is difficult and yes I will be trying to pinpoint what is affecting her. I feed her cooked chicken fillets, vegetables, some kangaroo meat and sardines alternating these through the week. Eggs, cheese, and rice occasionally. Dry biscuits maybe once a week. And a lamb off cut bone twice a week. This has always been the normal for her. I am happy to say that this morning there is a noticeable improvement already. She slept well and seems very happy and bouncing around playfully. Have been for an hours walk in the rain already and have started the day off nicely. Also her blood and urine tests came back fine.

Thanks. I am such a worry wart. I will just keep an eye on Molly and fingers crossed the itchys go and she stays healthy.

Thanks for your info. Definitely sent to try us. Just so annoying. I actually had wondered if she had a pain that she was trying to get to and relieve although that’s the one thing I did forget to mention at the vet visit. Although I have poked and prodded the poor girl all over trying to see if she was hurting but she didn’t batter an eyelid, no reactions at all so maybe not but it’s worth mentioning next vet visit. @persephone the dog you had on prednisolone for life, did it have any side effects from it at all ? That’s what worries me......

I just want some opinions and maybe some good advice. I have spent time at the vets this morning with Miss Molly. She has become an itchy dog lately and if left she would chew and scratch enough to make little sores so I am constantly at her. Mainly scratching and chewing at her back region. Her skin though is not red or inflamed anywhere. A month ago she was itchy so I took her to the vets and she was given a course of prednisolone. This worked almost instantly but within a few weeks of stopping she was right back to scratching. Nothing that I can think of has changed, her diet, plants in the yard, areas we walk in etc. I took her today and the vet I saw was in my opinion very thorough and helpful with my multitude of questions. Obviously she is allergic to something whether it is food, environmental or airborne. Always difficult to pinpoint what I guess. The vet seems to think it will be an ongoing issue. She has prescribed another course of prednisolone and the main object is too get it down to the lowest dose over the next few weeks and see how she is and then maybe keep her on the low dose. She also took a blood test and urine test. (Waiting still for the results of those)Of course I am willing to do anything to help my girl but I really aren’t too happy with her being on medication full time. So I guess what I’d like to know from you all is, is it ok to have her on the prednisolone full time or how has anyone else dealt with an itchy dog.

Sounds dreadful to me. But I honestly think getting the story out there publicly is the way to go. On tv and in the local papers. No business likes to look mean and everyone loves a happy ending so that’s what I’d do. ASAP

I give my little schnauzer girl lamb off cut bones twice a week and her teeth are great. Keeps the boredom down, she loves them and they do a great job on the teeth. And I also feed her raw chicken wing/necks a couple of times a week for her dinner also. Always have with all my dogs and never had an issue.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. Sounds like you had a great friend by your side for many years. It’s very hard saying goodbye to them and harder still to live without them. My girl passed away 18 months ago and I still think of her every day. Still miss her cheeky little ways. But we are all better for knowing these beautiful souls. Take care.

Hi, welcome. Beautiful dogs.

Hard decisions to make. I honestly don’t know what I’d do in your situation but I feel you go with what your gut instincts tell you. In the course of owning 4 legged friends my gut is usually right even though sometimes I have gone the opposite way. Only to regret it down the track. Good luck with everything though and whatever happens at least remember you’ve done the best for her.

Personally I wouldn’t be buying any food for my pets knowing it comes from overseas. Maybe the Applaws dry food doesn’t but I would stick to Australian Made and Owned. You never know what might be in it. Despite what te packaging says.

What a tragedy. Such a hard way for her to leave. My thoughts are with you and your family. R.I.P lovely Genevieve

Is there anything bad about just feeding meat/veg?
Kazm replied to doggo123's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I fully support fresh food. I have always fed this to mine. She eats cooked mince and cooked chicken fillet with a mixture of veges. Occasionally some kangaroo meat, sardines once a week and chicken necks a few times a week also. She also gets some rice, cheese and egg thrown into that mix as well. Quite a variety of foods for my little one. And for her teeth she loves chewing on bones a couple of times a week. I don’t actually brush her teeth and for a mini schnauzer I have been told by the vet that she has very good teeth. As for the content of fat etc I’m no rocket scientist but I do weigh her food and watch what she eats and for her size she is fine. And fresh food does work out cheaper -
I agree the Hills Prescription Diet does smell bad. I can’t blame him for not wanting to eat it. Poor guy. He is the same age as my Molly. I certainly hope that you can get him sorted and that things can improve for you.

Wow. That’s difficult. I had no idea really. How old is your fur friend? Is he not interested in food? The dog I was looking after was hungry all the time. Really hungry. I found that difficult as he was only allowed his two meals a day. All measured and just vet prescribed biscuits as he doesn’t digest the raw food. It’s such a difficult life. Sorry to hear that you are going through a bad situation.

I just recently had my first experience dog sitting a diabetic dog too. I had him for a full week. A week of morning and evening injections. It certainly is very daunting. Pretty easy as you say but secretly I was happy to see him go home. I hated dealing with it. Totally out of my comfort zone. He is type 2 bought on by bad diet. I feel sorry for the poor dog and his family too but they have learnt a valuable lesson. Schnauzer Max - I don’t know much about diabetes in dogs and didn’t even realise they can get type 1. Must be hard for you.

I too have encountered a few vets that have left me shaking my head. I was so lucky, if you call a Saturday after hours emergency lucky, 15 years ago when the only vet I could get to became the one I still use. A few locums in there that I haven’t been happy with occasionally but they know me and I know them and we discuss things. Although as recently as Zena’s diagnosis I was disappointed with them. A youngish female vet who now works with them really wasn’t up to scratch. She should have picked up on Zena rather than me taking her elsewhere. And greenies and denta stix over fresh bones. Wow! At least we all know where fresh bones come from and what’s in them.
